Orange Blossom I liked the character Fiyero, as well as the dynamics between most of the characters. I also enjoy reading twisted fairy tales - taking a classic story and changing it just a little bit. Gregory Maguire writes a lot of twisted fairy tales. My favorite of his is Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. It's a twist on Cinderella. I'd recommend it even if you didn't like Wicked. smile Fiyero was just about the only sympathetic character in the novel, I thought. I was OK with Elphie until she lost it and started sewing wings on monkeys and obsessing about the shoes, a gaudy material object when she was so anti-materialistic. It seemed too far-fetched for a person who maintained she had no soul to just lose it that way. Also, the book was almost unrelentingly violent, depressing, despairing, and sad. Anybody want my lightly used copy? talk2hand

Well, yes, but at least they are written with a droll sense of humor. Wicked isn't, really.

The unfortunate events books were interesting. I think the thing I liked the best about them is that while they're written for children, anyone can find them interesting and somewhat funny.

I don't like authors who take themselves too seriously. Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket) doesn't. I heard him do a radio interview and he's quite funny and brilliant. Don't know much about the author of Wicked, but maybe Blossom can fill me in.

Well, I don't know much about him myself, but I can give you his little bio off the back of his book "Mirror Mirror"... Quote: Gregory Maguire is the bestselling author of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, and Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the basis for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name. Maguire has lectured on art and culture at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the DeCordova Museum as well as at conferences at home and abroad. An occasional reviewer for the New York Times Book Review, he lives with his family near Boston, Massachusetts. You can also check out his website here for more information.

Well, he's well-credentialed, without a doubt, but he's so freakin' depressing.

I hope this doesn't sound too much like my post in the "senior Formal" thread, but I felt that this is a more appropriate place to post the story:
So I went to the senior formal they have at our university on thursday with Blossom because she's a senior. Aside from everything Blossom already explained, we decided to dance for a bit. I'm not the best dancer, especially to the music they were playing, but then a swing song came on. Blossom and I started swing dancing because I know how to do that (I was rusty because I forgot most of what I learned, but it was ok). I went to spin her and got smacked in the face by the guy next to me who was also swing dancing. Luckily, I caught the back of his hand because he was holding a camera. It hurt a lot, but I couldn't stop laughing because I knew something like that would happen
I do that a lot, I get myself into predictably bad situations. Anyway, just thought I'd share another stupid thing with everybody.

Well, thanks for sharing! rofl Pretty comical except for the painful part!
This past Thanksgiving I was a little flustered and I brewed an entire 12-cup pot of coffee, started the coffeemaker and then forgot to put the pot underneath. I noticed the cat watching something, and when I went to see what it was, she was staring with fascination at the large brown puddle advancing across the kitchen floor. I'm still cleaning coffee grounds out of the cabinets.

I've never even heard of Daniel Handler. I'd add him to my summer reading list but there are so many books I want to read already... ugh... I really should spend more time reading instead of sitting on the computer....
