Why aliens? Why not refer back to them pirates mentioned before that they were protecting themselves from and have a mole on board in the scientific community who is sick of the military influence.

So for this to work, we need
A) lvl of human technology
B) lvl of Alien technology discovered by humans
C) Layout of ship
And Ill need to figure out if I wanna be science or security staff.....

Level of human technology..
think Firefly type ships.. very basic, gets the job done, and very rough in appearance.
Firearms still use a variation of black powder (meaning, projectile weapons, none of that fancy laser crap). Ships have laser technology, though it still consumes a ridiculous amount of power and is often reserved only for the largest of the human military ships. Solid fuel rockets and railguns still provide the majority of their weaponry.
Nanotechnology is widespread, though it is used more for medical evaluation and/or treatment than enhancements in human abilities. Most programs to augment human physiological have ended badly, often with irreparable damage done to either the motor skills or physical components.
Level of alien technology..
Largely unknown, still. Faster travel through space, weaponry gains have been minimal due to dna coding of weaponry. The structure of the alien species was largely peaceful with the necessary force of a military to keep other alien factions from bothering them and to quell any rebellions that might arise. Finding weapons that are not dna encoded is difficult as there hasn't been the identification of weapons facilities on the planet. What they have uncovered has been revolutionary in particle displacement technology.
Power sources have been difficult to unlock due to the fact most objects in the world are powered down and require a replacement of their powered technology. Objects that still operate use a either an anti-matter styled supply or draw energy from the user. This leads the scientists to believe that the aliens were of a far more powerful nature, having a much stronger "internal battery" than humans.
Their architecture and ship design is sleek and elegant. The hull of the ship is of a material that can be translucent or opaque depending on the control settings for the various rooms. I'm sure I could draw a layout of the ship soon enough.
I'm sure I'll develop more as time goes on.. these are my first concepts.

Mine is gonna be Orion Vexant, Colonel. His current orders are a transfer to the Summer's Rain to help oversee the project of deciphering the alien language. He's.. not happy about this, as he feels his skills as a soldier are ill placed. He is a quick study of foreign languages (which is why he was tasked with boarding the ship and overseeing the project) but feels that being stuck on a vessel floating in the black abyss is more a punishment than an honor.
And.. feel free to pick scientists or research people or something that's not war-styled. haha
Go figure I'd pick a military like mind, yea?

Just an fyi.. Summer's Rain is a military sanctioned ship that has research being conducted on it to decipher the alien language. This being said.. there's likely to be navy personnel (because it's the Navy that first discovered how to fly the damned thing, so they have a point of reference for action to words), scientists/researchers, and military personnel (such as our lovely Orion). There is the possibility that some of the scientists or researchers would be regular civilians.. like professors of esteemed universities or some such.
Or, there could even be a handful of people who aren't related to the mission, like ship crew who take care of the mess hall, the medical ward, or some such. As long as you can make it make sense as to WHY your character is there, it's all going to work out.

Stalus On another another note, HI KURAI! On another another another note, I believe Utah is the Mormon capital of the world, but that's just what I've heard. its about 40 60 now and I was serving a mission for my church. thats why I was away for so long 12 comes out!!!!???? Yesssssssssss!
