I...don't know...nothing should be wrong...he's very charming...I would be more comfortable if Mandrake were here. I don't think I'd feel as vulnerable...maybe I should leave...
Serena took a deep breath, "I want better for my daughter than I have gotten. She does not deserve someone to talk down to her, to break her heart and to break her spirit."
"I could never do such a thing. Serenata is my joy. I would much rather have my heart ripped from me than to be the cause of her tears."

Do what you need to, Serenata said quickly. I will not take offense, nor will Nicholai once I talk to him. I do not want you to be upset or uncomfortable.

Then I will leave...maybe we can meet again, all four of us, once I have a better stake on my lifemate. Lene shifted into vapor and disappeared, streaking off to find her Mandrake.
Serena eyed the spot where her daughter had been, looking to Serenata questioningly. Her attention turned back to Nicholai, "I have heard the same statements from my own lifemate, and yet I am here warning you of such things. Serenata's family will not hesitate to give you a lesson in manners should they be convinced you are not treating her properly. I myself need to give my own lifemate a tune up."
Another nod, though he was slightly disbelieving that he would be cornered by Serenata's family for any reason. The business of lifemates was usually something left for the pair to handle."

If my family had followed that policy it is unlikely that I would be standing here tonight, Serenata whispered quietly in their minds. And please understand, Lene meant no disrespect. She was feeling...uncomfortable.

There is no disrespect taken, Lifemate. I wish for her wellness as much as you.
"You do not believe they would do such a thing. I pray then that you do not test them to find out. I would like to apologize, while we are on the topic of family, for my son Damien. His callous actions were not sanctioned by the family, nor would they ever be. Damien's first duty has always been to protect his family. He loves his sisters very much, though he doesn't show it anymore. But I will be having words with my son on his actions. And with my lifemate, who I am sure has had a hand in Damien's thoughts on women."
"I do not wish to cause discord within your family. That was never an intention."
"Intended or not...it is a consequence of actions. We will handle it as we do everything else. With honor and grace."

Serenata watched the exchange between her mother and her lifemate quietly through she was still worrying about her father when he found out...and Damien in general...

"As all great beings take anything."
Serena smiled, her eyes lightening. "You do flatter me and mine with your statements. Do you charm my daughter this way as well?"

Serenata smiled slyly at her lifemate, "Nicholai can be quite charming when he puts his mind to it."

Serenata's mother smiled again, "I am sure that he will need those skills when we introduce him to your father. Perhaps your grandfather at the same time as well..." She grinned, "That way when your father puts his foot down, your grandfather will be there to shove it firmly into his mouth."
Nicholai didn't know whether to laugh or to be afraid. "I would be honored to meet any of Serenata's family. They are as dear to me as they are to her." He nuzzled Serenta's neck, smiling down at her affectionately.

"I should like to. When will we hold such a meeting?"
Serena frowned, "I am not sure. I would like to speak with my lifemate first, which I assume will happen tonight." She looked away, shadows falling over her eyes.
Nicholai held Serenata tighter, Is your father truly so awful that his own lifemate keeps him at a distance? I have seen one joyous look from her when she has spoken of him, and that was about your grandfather inserting his foot into his mouth...

Things have not been easy for her... Serenata replied softly before speaking up to her mother. "I'll go with you to talk to him."

Serena opened her mouth to speak, but it was Nicholai's voice that beat her to it, "You will do no such thing, my lifemate. It is neither your mother's nor your responsibility to go to your father on my behalf. I am the one who must do such a thing." I will not send your mother into the lion's den, nor you with her. It is my duty to see to your safety, and I will do so for you and all those you hold dear.
"I think you should allow me to speak with him first. While I am certain he will not harm me, you, are fair game for attack."

"I agree with my mother, Nicholai, that is not a good idea." Especially if Damien's spoken to him...Nicholai... She feared for him. She'd heard stories of her father's temper from her grandfather and aunt and although she'd never witnessed it herself...You are not going to meet him, not without me.

Nicholai growled a warning to the night. "I would much rather do this this night then. I do not wish for you, Mother of my Lifemate, to be burdened because of fate.
Serena began to protest again, but stopped. She could see he was determined. She bit her lip and hung her head, "Serenata, what do you think?"
