Hitomi shifted uncomfortably, moving away from the Night Vigil and Matthew. Turning around away from them she stared out into the night noticing in the distance the darker than night figures of the Horuns. Yet in did nothing to get her mind off the Night Vigil, an ancient custom amongst those in Heaven one she had been a part of many times. It caused memories to resurface, memories that were better hidden:

"What's this again?"the teenaged girl asked, trying very hard to resist bouncing although her sky blue hair braided down her back swayed side to side occasionally from her contained excitement.

"It's called the Night Vigil," the boy replied, looking not much older than the girl at his side except that his own movements were more relaxed although he smiled at the girl,

"Hitomi you should really try to calm down."

"Matthew I can't this all so new and exciting," she giggled excitedly and bounced on the balls of her feet. Matthew just rolled his eyes at the girl,

"Your acting like a little girl," but he said these words with a joking smile and his smile only got wider when she laughed.

"I know but Heaven is just so wonderful and so different than that other place,"a shadow of sadness flitted across her face before replaced by the smile that she was so used too,

"Oh my gosh they're starting!" The procession of angels moved aside as Belial made his way out, holding the single wicker dish gently between two gloved hands. Her eyes got big at the sobriety of the event as everyone gradually surrounded it and bowed their heads. Bowing her own she closed her eyes and thought,

'So what do we do now?' Then it was almost as if her whole mind expanded its outer most limits and she felt like she was one with everything and that through that pool of water there was everything contained in it. White bursting light filled all the corners of her mind and she welcomed it though, and she felt it course through her. Then everything went black.

She looked up startled from the sudden memory, she had almost forgotten about that one. That had been her first time. Now though, she behind and to the side of her her black wings a sharp contrast to the white wings of the Innocents, she wasn't so sure if she belonged in the Night Vigil. Sitting down crosslegged on the carpeted ground she closed her eyes and let her wings unfurl her wings to their fullest.

"You're acting like a little girl," Matt called over to the pouting woman with a smile that betrayed a hidden laugh, "It may seem boring, but it'll keep you going a little longer." Drawing his index finger through the clear liquid, the Lord traced the symbol of the trinity onto the forehead of the man on his left, followed by his warm palm and a whispered prayer. Immediately the man closed his eyes, smiling blissfully before rising to his feet, rejuvanated and ready to combat the fear that swept through even this hallowed of ground.

'Wait... Did I already say that...?' He mused, overcome by a sense of deja vu. Shaking it off, Matthew continued the vigil, awakening another of his Lieutenants.

Her head snapped up from its mediative position and her silver orbs widened at the comment. She looked over at him but saw that he wasn't even paying attention anymore he was continuing the ritual. She shook her head bewilderedly, not sure if she really heard those words spoken or if they were just some whisper from the past.

'Well if he did say it, does he even know what those weirds mean?' Contemplative now, she turned her head back around and emptied her mind for now. She could hear it, like the sound of a drum but muffled, she could hear their heartbeats echoing across the emptiness of her mind and another sound more clear, echoing in the background, the sound of water. She felt herself reaching towards it like an insect being drawn to a light; she felt the same way, it drew her in and she didn't care. It almost seemed tangible, as she extened her hand then that feeling of being lost washed over her. It was the same thing and the water was pulling her into it, expanding her mind to all possibilies and beyond its capacity.

"Do you remember the devotion?" Matt asked softly, stirring the surface of the water with his fingers. Somewhere in the back of his mind this same scene played itself out;

Leaning over the white-haired child, Belial stirred his fingers across the surface of the fluid lingering in the wicker bowl.
"Do you remember the devotion, child?" He asked, his tone bordering on the impatience of a man who'd repeated the same phrase over and over for the last night and every night since gaining his office.

"Of course," Matt replied, turning to look back at—

"The Light guide us," He brothe, just like the memory continued. 'Of course I looked back... It's not every day someone so young is chosen as the right hand of the ranking officiate.' The fact that the explaination didn't satisfy bounced off of his focused mind. Placing two fingertips to Hitomi's forehead, the Lord waited patiently.

She gasped at the sudden physical contact which broke her from her trance and she felt a chill rush over her, like a river washing over her. Shuddering her eyes opened wide and she felt the air rush out of her. Looking up at Matthew with unseeing eyes, she looked back down and blinked rapidly as the carpeted floor focused itself in her vision. She looked back up at him and said questioningly,

"Matthew?" She glaced at his outstretched arm and realized the slight pressure on her forehead was him and his fingers were refreshingly chill to the touch; it helped her to breathe.

"So why are you touching my forehead?"she asked, forgetting completely about the Night Vigil for a moment.

"Wow, way to zone out," He chuckled, flicking water at the wide-eyed Hitmoi, "I was just asking if you remembered the devotion to the Night Vigil." Flicking his hair back and out of his eyes, Matthew turned, drawing out the moist symbols of the vigil upon the forehead of his last Lieutenant before placing his palm on the man's forehead, absolving him of the day.

Flexing out his cold fingers, the youth returned his attentions to the black-winged angel, offering his free left hand to help her up. 'As much as I'd like to sleep, it seems something's going to have to be done about the Horun,' He sniffed inwardly, 'Without them, there's no way the Death Squadron will make it out of here before noon.'

Risking a look out the open main gates, Matt chewed at his bottom lip. 'Sun's down with no sign of the moon... Whatever they're going to do, they're going to do soon.'

Looking at the group of angels around she remembered what had been going on now: the Night Vigil. She looked up at him questioningly,

"The devotion? I don't think so...why?" Suprising even herself she grabbed his hand and felt herself be pulled up easily. Staggering to get situated on the floor, her body swayed side to side dangerously. Shaking her head to get rid of the dizziness she focused her attention on Matthew and didn't take her eyes off him. She didn't know why but that sudden wrench from her mediatative state really shook her.

"Just think of it as a shot of coffee," He smiled, sticking the tip of his tongue out at the woman as he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, sliding his own farther up her arm to steady her swaying. "Speaking of which, when was the last time you got something to eat or drink, sister?"

At the mention of food, one of his Lieutenants dropped from the ceiling, landing in a light jog towards a pile of small knapsacks laid out by the main gate. Sliding his unclothed hand inside, the man returned his digit to the world grasping a string of licorice. The bags themselves were something of magic, allowing three or four articles of prepacked food items to be converted into alternate items of equal size. Picking through the items he'd packed that morning, Matthew could invision the cold cider flask hidden away within his own bag.

She gasped as if she just realized he was touching her and drew her arm back hugging it to her chest and then smiled as if she was trying to play the whole thing off.

"The last time I ate," she pondered outloud, voicing her thoughts outloud and then she smiled sheepishly,

"I actually don't remember but I'm sure I'll be okay." Turning on the heels of her feet, she staggered drunkenly as if she was about to fall then pulled herself up. It was like his arm had been an anchor and now that it was gone she couldn't even keep her balance. Trying to stand up straight she tried to focus on the carpeted floor but it didn't seem to help her at all. Blinking she tried to get rid of this new topsy turvy world she had been thrown into. The world spinned dangerously around her and felt her body tilt off balance.

With an amused sigh, the silver-haired Captain caught the woman's shoulders, saving her once more from a grounded fate. "Whoa there," He chuckled, "I think you'd better sit down for a second or two there Ace." Flicking out his wings for his own balance, Matt kept Hitomi's body in check, mentally clocking the distance between the provisions and his current position. He of course knew of several restorative spells, but in experience, food and water usually did a better job fixing a drunken man's wobbles, or a sleepy woman's misplaced steps.

"You're starting to remind me of someone," He grinned, slowly pulling away his arms, much like someone pulls their fingers away from the first cards in a paper castle; As though pulling away too fast would send the structure scattering on the tiny air current.

She didn't know what it was but everytime he touched her ,even just slightly, it set off a chain of reactions inside of her. A part of her actually liked it and yearned for him to touh her again because he was so solid and secure while somewhere deep inside of her she was just a mess of emotions and she felt like she needed that security. Yet the other part of her felt scared everytime he touched her; she just wanted to withdraw from him and hide because she was scared; she just didn't know what it was that she was scared of. The fact that she actually felt some unrecognizable feeling for this man, or that everytime someone touched her so gently it was usually accompanied by something more unpleasant or maybe a mixture of both. She wasn't so sure she wanted to delve into these feelings though because she wasn't going to become too attached to him. As his arms slid out from her she waved her arms at the sudden change and steadied herself. Then sighing as finally found some balance she didn't even bother to look behind her shoulder at him, scared the slightest movement would send her toppling over.

"So who do I remind you of?" she asked, slightly curious despite her promise to not grow attached.

"There's a guard back at HQ," He sniffed, returning white-gloved hands to rest in his pockets, "Every time we head down to the taverns for a little merry making, she's the first to hit the ale." Chuckling softly, Matthew held up an twirling hand, as though to emphasize the point as he headed towards the bags. "She's always been a little absent-minded, so she quickly forgets how many drinks she's had."

As his firm mouth spread into a charming smile, a devious smirk formed at the edge of his right intersection. "By the time we're ready to go, she insists on leading the way, despite being unable to walk more than three steady steps," He added, "Freya of course declares that she's fine... Moments before pitching forward, with more than half of the royal guard leaping to catch her before she plunges down towards the cobbles."

With a light laugh, Matt slid open the drawstrings on his knapsack, pulling out two ripe peaches from the confines of the satchel. Rising to his feet, knees popping pleasureably, the youth juggled the fruits between his hands, catching one with his teeth before tossing the other to Hitomi.

Listening to the story with half a smile she was more than a little suprised when he tossed the fruit to her and stumbled forward to catch it, almost losing her balance but succeeding in keeping on her feet. Rubbing her fingertips over the peach, as if to make sure it was alright in every way she hesistantly raised it to her lips and took a careful bite. Her eyes shone with ravenous hunger and she took another bite out of the delicious fruit. It had been such a long time since she had tasted something so fresh and delicious. The peach seemed to be bursting with flavor and she took another bite before she even completely swallowed the previous piece. She smiled sheepishly after she swallowed the piece, some of the peach juice had escaped her mouth, made a trail down the corner of lip and had just reached the top of her neck. Yet she found that she didn't care what anyone thought, this was delicious and she was going to enjoy it. Taking another bite from the half-eaten fruit, she happily chewed then swallowed and then smiled at Matthew:

"Thank you for the food,"she said, giving him a small smile. She didn't feel quite so dizzy now that she was nourished a little.

"No problem," He smiled, using a thumb to wipe a bead of peach juice from his chin, "I've got some cherries, a handful of raspberries, and a chunk of banana bread in there as well." Taking note of the woman's ravenous hunger, he added, "I ate before we left though, so you're welcome to anything in there; Mine's the one with the wolf clasp."

Taking another moist bite from the fruit in his palm, Matthew felt his teeth scrape the pit in the center, and sheared away a large, flat hunk of fruit. Leaning back against the great door frame of the gate, the youth slid his right leg up, resting his heel against a large metal stud. Crossing his arms, he stared out into the night, thoughtfully taking another bite from the dwindling peach.

Finishing the peach in record time, she shook her head and smiled gently at him,

"No I'm fine for now but thank you for the offer." She watched him for a second as he rested casually on the door frame before averting her eyes to the peach pit that rested in the palm of her hand. She stared at it intently as if all the answers she seeked could be revealed from staring at the pit. Sighing she began to toss the thing in the air, watching it with silver orbs and then catching it was an unhuman efficiency. It was a simple routine and it served to keep her mind off the problems at hand. Her tossing and catching became faster and the peach pit merely became a dark blur that flashed from in the air to her hand and back again. With her ever increasing tempo, her own emotions became more frenzied inside of her. Her own feelings about Matthew, she knew couldn't get in the way of her revenge of what she had been wrongly accused of.

She screamed at the sight she saw, her voice rising to an unearthly shriek. The bodies layed in odd positions, their limbs were bent at unusual angles and blood pooled beneath them. She felt to her knees in utter shock and extending her shaking arm she touched the one nearest to her and pulled back her hand which was covered with blood. Crying hysterically she seized one of the bodies and clung to it with both arms and felt the white magic surge through her and to the dead body; she desperately tried to revive it yet it seemed her magic did no good for the dead. She screamed once more and she heard the door slam open. Looking at the door with startled eyes she saw Matthew and a couple more angel soldiers in the doorway staring at her with wide, frightened eyes. Fresh tears rolled down her cheek washing a clean trail through the blood that painted her face and she held the body closer rocking back and forth. Matthew said something to one of the guards but she didn't hear it, her own screams echoing through her ears. The guard walked up to her and raising his sword and reversing it hit her in the temple with the head. Her screams were quieted by the increasing darkness.
