I have a new annoyance that isn't necessarily something that FFnet authors do. Recently I had a user post what was essentially an advertisement for another user's story into the review section of my story. There was no review of my work, not even a mention of my story at all, just a "hey this other story is the best fic out there for this fandom." Sorry, but my hard work isn't your billboard.

That's happened to me before too. I don't see it as much on AO3, though. Its only happened to me once there. But on ff.n I must have gotten at least three "reviews" like that in the past year.

On ff.n I just report them as spam and move on. But on AO3 (since the comment function allows reviews and responses to be viewed as public conversation threads) I will go and actually read the story advertised, then post my comments/review of said story as a reply to the initial advertisement posted on my own story.

I'm sorry that that happened. I replied to the "reviewer" via pm and told them that I haven't ever heard of those amazing fics that I apparently should have known about because good fics in the fandom I write for are allegedly "really hard to find for some reason". You know, I'm proud to say that I was really nice despite the fact that they had implied that my story sucks (Even though they only posted the review on my very first chapter. And even if my story does suck, I'd like to know what I can improve instead of just being given story plugs from some person who obviously didn't even bother to read my stuff).

I haven't ever been on AO3 but I've heard about it mostly through Kunoichi.

The site's still in beta, so there's a waiting list to join. But I do still highly recommend you apply to join. Its worth the wait. The site's not quite as intuitive or easy to navigate as ff.n, but it does allow you to do things that ff.n does not and I think that more than makes up for it.

The two that are most significant to me are that AO3 allows you to create your own fandoms, and you can group stories in series so that all a reader has to do is click on the series title and view all the fics you've written in that series.

The tags also make finding something very specific easier. But you have to be careful to phrase it or type it correctly, otherwise you could get nothing at all.

My one complaint about AO3 is that it just doesn't get as much traffic as ff.n does. For that reason and that reason alone, I will never abandon my ff.n account and move to AO3 completely.

New annoyance:

When someone says "because this fandom needs more of [this]", when the fandom is already overflowing with whatever [this] is. Fandoms need more variety, b***h!

So this isn't something an author did to make my eye twitch, but it was a review left by another user that bothered the hell out of me:

Quote:
Little sad about the lack of a pairing as I am always interested to see how authors write how the relationships devolp, especially with the changes they make to characters. Some merely pass it off (which I don't personally don't like) but I had hoped to see such a prodigious writer like yourself write the budding of a relationship with this new and improved Ichigo. Would have been interesting to see how you wrote the progress of such a relationship that is so different yet similar to other types of bonds.

Nonetheless an amazing new chapter that has left me giddy with excitement. It has also left me with a drive to further improve upon my own writing style. I would say that I'm patiently awaiting a new release but that would be a lie. However I know that such a piece of work takes time and effort.

I eagerly wait to see what happens next. Have a good one

I bolded the bit that bothered me. Is it so terrible that an author chooses to stray away from shipping a character? The review is from a story that I enjoy reading immensely and it's one of the few that I regard to stand well on its own without any kind of romantic involvement between characters. Granted, I'm used to seeing some pairings, but I don't see how it would fit in what's currently going on in the story itself.

Oh, for a second I thought you were going to say that it bothered you that the reviewer was being incredibly passive aggressive with a somewhat backhanded compliment towards the author just because the story wasn't being written exactly the way the reader wanted. But I agree that not every single story needs some shipping/romance.

I was a bit deeply offended by the backhanded compliment, but I was more bothered by the reaction of other reviewers that the author chose not to do a pairing.

I'll have to look into it, then. I'm always looking for new fanfiction sites that don't give my computer viruses~

I always respect the choice of the author since it is their story, but not a lot of readers can do that. I can't tell you how many stories I've read and thought they were absolutely brilliant, and then when I went to review I see all of these bordering-on-snarky comments because x, y, z didn't happen. And it's almost always because some specific romance pairing didn't happen or there wasn't romance at all... which is kinda funny because usually the stories don't even have the romance genre, so what did everyone expect?

I don't get it either. Even when the author implies what direction they'll be going with their story, I don't see where readers have an excuse to complain. If it's not their cup of tea, then they can at least move on right?

I keep getting reminded of a review I received for my Hobbit fanfiction and the reviewer was complaining about how I wrote my Bilbo. This is even after I stated that the story would be AU so of course it wouldn't go the way people would expect it to. It's MY business how my story goes! sweatdrop

That's beyond annoying. Unless a story isn't labeled appropriately, I don't see why readers feel the need to complain. You're reminding me of when I had my story labeled with "some mild sexual content" and I had a reader freak out on me because my story didn't have full-blown sex scenes. rolleyes

THAT! That right there drives me up a wall! stressed

It's like god forbid that what they're reading isn't how it was supposed to turn out. I mean...isn't that the whole point of fanfiction? It's like the Burger King slogan: "Have it your way."

And damn it all, I will have it MY way! emotion_dowant

I swear, we can come up with a long list of "annoying things that readers/reviewers do" but I don't think it would be well-received. xp
