30 isn't too old. It's only been a decade plus two since High school or whatever it is there.
Maybe it isn't a coincidence. You notice that anime/manga companies team up once in a while? (I'm joking here. Just incase someone wants to complain to me about who actually made DeathNote. I know perfectly well who did.)
Poor side characters. They end up being important to the story, but at the end noone gives a care. The ones you listed from other series are good examples. I don't like Naruto, it was good during the Zabuza Arc, you really need to feel bad for Haku and he was a pretty cool guy. How does it feel to be killed by acupuncture needles? That's right, death by medical tools. That's off topic, though.
You might call Misa smartly dumb if that's even a word. I vaguely remember her blonde moments being helpful at some points, though rarely. I don't remember her parts too well. I really don't like her.

There just aren't enough girls in Death Note to choose, really. And there's only one who gets enough screentime, Misa. So since I just need to have something to look at (Sorry, Remu won't do. Not my type,) I chose her.
She is basically a dumb blonde character with some actually smart bits now and then. Sort of like Launch/Lunch/Lanch from Dragon Ball (only her weapon's far deadlier than a gun, or even a bazooka.)
My girlfriend had a joke going about the nicknames they were always using... L, N, and so on. "Any moment now, J and K will show up and erase everyone's memory."
Now that would be one crossover I would see. "A Death Note? Oh, we have that in laptop version back at the base."

I guess you're right... I like that nickname joke. Wonder what happens if you have three people with the same first letter. Watari had W and Weddie had w. What would the 3rd one be. Odd thought right? I don't quite get the reference there, though. J and K as in joke or characters from something?
Here's an odd thought. Take all the DeathNote people who used the letter system and use their letters. Capitals letter users only. L.A.W.N. I just thought of that for no real reason, but it works. I don't remember if Mello(Mero) ever used a letter... I'm sure he didn't.

He didn't, as far as I remember.
But... L.A.W.N....
No wonder, because "If Kira finds out your real name, your a** is grass." Or lawn, in this case.
I've always wondered how old L really was. Because Mero and Nia have half his personality each (Nia the calculating, cold, yet immature-looking part, and Mero was the competitive, sugar-high part.) They either took on those aspects due to their admiration for L, or because... "Nia, I am your father." rolleyes

L was 20-24 if I counted right. It's a big range but I haven't gone back to check.
That's creepy... Really creepy. Hey I know it's anime but Nia is the only one with hair color that isn't quite natural. His hair is white, did he go through some huge trauma or something? Or was he born like that. It's anime... but he's the only one with an unnatural hair color (for his age).
You kind of wonder how L doesn't get fat from all those sweets. In fact he's about that same as me... He's really underweight. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I had heard about the brain being the biggest burner of calories in the human body. Maybe DN's author's going for that theory too. Though with all that sugar, I don't really see how he could be so calm and collected all the time.
In the manga, what he says is that he's going to "pass as a college student" when he goes and shakes hands with Raito. It's hard to tell how old most characters are in anime, even though Death Note makes it easy in most cases.
As for Nia's hair color? I vote for either albino or hair dye.

He uses bleach! Kidding. You're right, how can someone who eats almost entirely pure sugar be that calm. Actually I can't talk... I do that too sometimes. Maybe the brain being the biggest calorie burner is right... It's all I've got to burn calories with... and I'm barely at recommended weight. sweatdrop

Mero on the other hand... He eats as much as L did, and doesn't think nearly as much (it's still a lot of thinking he puts into some plans, like the "Right Angle" one.) I think the best phrase ever by Nia is the very first he says to Raito. "Hello, L the second. Pleased to meet you!" Quote: I don't quite get the reference there, though. J and K as in joke or characters from something? Didn't see that question. J and K as in the two main characters from Men In Black, a good movie that spawned a dumb sequel and a decent cartoon. I could actually see those two breaking into Raito's lair (post L, of course,) and going "we're from the SPK, Division 6," before erasing their memories. Either them, or Logan from Rosswel Conspiracies. Either would consider the Death Note an alien artifact.

I haven't seen Men in Black in a while... Long enough to forget any names. That would probably be right on target though. It's funny both L and Light have L as their first letter. Unless you use Raito. Then it really doesn't seem to matter. Maybe Mero worked out? What do the characters do off screen, right?

Just going off and saying it "plain owns" is all fine and dandy, but why does it own? Just saying something is right or wrong doesn't make someone who doesn't know what it is any wiser.

And that's why I always go and do those thirty paragraphs (okay not that many,) rants when posting about a show (check the threads I started in this same forum.) Let me show you.
------------
It's not that it owns that is important, but how. Death Note is one of the most intelligent series I've seen lately. As in, from Tantei Gakuen Q (Q Detective School) to this day. There's enough interesting characters for anyone to find one they like, and the main character, while sociopathic and feeling-impaired, is indeed incredibly smart (well, until he went and killed himself, with some help.)
The power play between characters (first between Raito and L, then between Raito and L against the "Yotsuba Kira," then Raito with/against Nia and against Mero) is something I enjoyed all through the manga. All things considered, it's a very good tale about how absolute power can corrupt anyone, and about how justice (the divine kind,) always wins in the end.
------------
See, that's how you say something "just plain owns," but informatively enough so it may attract people who aren't still aware of the series' ownage value. mrgreen

Thats more like it. And don't forget Ryuk. Everything happened because one being got bored. In an odd sense it kind of shows you the extremes one person's/thing's boredom can reach. That's obviously not the theme, though.
It's a nice change from Naruto and all that stuff on right now, where the only way to fight is with giant balls of who-knows-what, even bigger explosions, and characters who come back to life when they should probably be dead ten times over. Not that those shows aren't good. But, it makes you wonder why noone ever shows up at the battlefield wondering what's going on. sweatdrop
