Fairy Tale
Once upon a time there lived a beautiful girl who lived in the outskirts of the village. There, she lived with her boastful father who wanted very much to marry his beautiful daughter off to a rich nobleman. One day, as the father was going on and on about how wonderful and beautiful his daughter is, a devil who was just passing through over heard and suddenly he wanted to make the girl his bride. The devil decided to follow the man home and wait till he fell asleep before he would steal a glance at the girl. It was just before midnight that the father had gone off to sleep and the devil snuck in to peek at the girl. The father had not been lying; in fact the girl was even more beautiful than the devil had imagined. The girl was sleeping in her cot when suddenly her eyes burst open and stared at the devil watching her. Surprised, the devil ran out as fast as he could. The girl sat there surprised, and unsure of what she was to do so she crept out of her cot and went to her window where a beautiful tree stood just outside of it. She touched the tree and asked for protection and guidance then went back to the cot to sleep. The next morning, sitting inside the window frame was a circular piece of glass with a gold frame around it. Unsure of what to do with it, she pocketed the item and forgot about it.
On the other side of the forest the devil was quickly making plans on what to do about making the girl his bride. He decided that he would have a hard time making the girl his bride if he looked like the devil he was so he changed his features to make himself look like a handsome young man. He also knew that the father wouldn’t marry his beautiful daughter to just anyone so he gather as many forest animals as he could and changed him into what might be a king’s court. He would go into town tomorrow and ask the father for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
The next day the girl was in town shopping for bread while her father was, as usual, boasting about how beautiful his daughter was to the rest of the town. Suddenly trumpets were heard sounding off and a group of people was walking down the main street of the village. “The king is here! The king is here!” people shouted as horses with knights mounted atop walked towards the center of the village. Following the knights was what seemed to be the king.
Finally they stopped and the king jumped from his horse and exclaimed, “I have traveled from my great city to your small village on the promise that a beautiful girl lived here!.” Jumping out of the crowd, the girl’s father hurried to the side of the king and bowed. “Great king, it is true! I have raised the most beautiful daughter that has ever lived!” and suddenly the father found the girl in the crowd and brought her forward. The girl looked into the eyes of the king and became suddenly confused. She knew these eyes. The king looked at the girl and smiled widely, “I would like to make her my bride.” He jumped down from his horse and took the girl’s hand to kiss it. When the girl got her hand back, she balled her hand into a fist. She knew this man from somewhere, but where? It bothered her then suddenly her pocket became very heavy with whatever was in it. She suddenly remembered the glass disk and took it out to look at it once more as her father was making marriage arrangements with the king. Through the glass she could see her father talking quickly with the king except the king was not standing there. In his place was the devil that she had seen the night before and around him where the knights should have stood, were forest animals. Suddenly a loud scream left the throat of the girl and she exclaimed “Devil! Devil!” and having been found out, the devil quickly lost his disguise and stood as he was: a devil, in the center of the village. Standing in front of the devil was the father turning red from anger; he reached for the knife in his belt and cut off the devil’s head. The girl was never bothered by the devil again.
