In my case, Odin and Freyja (and the scary goddess) chose me. Although I was drawn to them because of my interest in Norse magic and mysticism, I was chosen by them when Odin and Freyja appeared to me during a series of visions and guided meditations I was performing on the Elder Futhark as outlined in The Nine Doors of Midgard by Edred Thorsson.
As far as the scary goddess is concerned, I encountered Hel at her hall in Helheim when I was meditating upon her rune, Hagalaz and projected my psyche into the Underworld. She simply walked up to me and declared me her godhi--and that was that. I asked Odin and Freyja for guidance after this encounter and in a vision was told that as long as my service to her did not bring dishonor to the Aesir or Vanir as well as to my fellow Asatruar, they did not see any problem with this. I should mention that I'm hoping to avoid serving her in Helheim, as I would rather spend eternity in Folkvang with my Naughty Goddess and all the noisy women!
