First off, you win for the Slayers reference. Xellos = Unlimited amounts of amusement and manipulation. He was my second favorite character in the series. Zelgadis (and his coffee addiction <3) shall forever remain number one.

Finally, someone got the reference.

I'm a writer of two main fandoms (one, now that the other has sort of . . . lost its general appeal).

The first is Harry Potter, and it's the one I no longer write, since I feel that J.K. really wrapped up everything perfectly in Book 7. When I did begin writing it, using the Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny plotline, I was trying to compensate for the fact that neither ship had actually occurred in the series yet. I loved each character and found the plot to be so entertaining, that I wanted to help it along (in my mind, of course). I can't say that my fics were really any good . . . but they were fun to write.

The second is Life with Derek. I stumbled upon the show one day, and I fell in love with the characters. The pairing I write, the one I saw the very first time I watched the show, is Derek/Casey, in spite of the fact that they're stepsiblings. I was really torn apart at first, wondering where the line reading "Incest" is, and if Dasey was crossing it. I think I might've been drawn in by the potential illicitness of the pairing and the fact that it would never happen in the series. Now, however, it's gone beyond the forbidden fruit concept and to the point of obsession. It's like a study, the way I analyze the characters, comparing them to each other and people I know, picking their brains, and trying to figure out exactly what makes them tick.

I've written for two other fandoms, Danny Phantom and Pirates of the Caribbean. Writing for the former was a decision made mainly for friends, who were/are obsessed with the cartoon. I liked analyzing the characters there, too, but they were just too simple to really give me any enjoyment. The latter's fic idea came from random inspiration, and was just to get my view of the characters written down.

Re-reading this post, I've come to believe that I choose fandoms based on characters and the complexity thereof, and I enjoy writing for them a lot more when I do so and when the characters have that ideal complexity. I need to take pyschology in college, I guess . . . I suppose I also enjoy when I can write something that I know will never happen in the series but could, according to canon (because I hate defying the laws of the creator). I can have ideas for any fandom under those conditions (not always requiring the last, however), even if I hate the fandom completely.

Me? I have lots of fandoms that spand quite broadly despite that the majority of my writings may just be fore one. If I do write in other fandoms, it's usually by request of friends. I'm always up for a challenge - if I'm able to push myself to do it. I used to write quite fluidly as in I wouldn't even be halfway finished with one fanfiction before about 2 or 3 more would come along and strike my fancy and I'd have to get the ideas for those down on paper and as soon as I finished that one, I'd dive right into the next.

But me, I'm open for just about almost any fandom - as long as I know what it is I'm getting into. Sometimes I'll get into other fandoms that no one's ever heard of and I'll get questionable looks or whatever, but no complaints about my writing. I've been praised many times over. I've gotten flamed a couple of times, but you gotta take the good with the bad when it comes to getting into this sort of thing. rolleyes

I'm pretty sure like most of you, my fandom pretty much consists of a couple of things - either not happy with the plot of the given series and wanting to do something different, or an obsession with particular casts members if not the entire crew - but it's rare I'll ever like an ENTIRE cast in a series.

[And Yes, I'm aware of YGO Abridged as well and have used a couple of traits from it in one of my recent stories xd heart the series!]

I've only ever written FFVIII fanfiction...and I couldn't really explain why.

I just really loved the characters. They're all so shitty seperately...but when they come together they start fitting together...so it's like a mix and match.

It didn't really 'end' and there were lots of gaps and a lot of life left in the characters for fanwork and the characters are quite simple. ^^;

So basically, it's s**t and beautiful. xd

I don't think the characters got shown fully...you got glimpses or Seifer smiling and being nice...and you don't see that again...so I like being able to bring him back around. =]

I'd love to do Naruto...but since it's so longrunning, I couldn't because anything I wrote would be discounted by later installments.
In about 65 years or so...when it's finished or just discontinued...I'd do one. =]

My main fandom is Harry Potter. I've also written fanfics for Twilight, though I've only finished and posted one.

My main reason for writing in these series is my full out obsession with the series. I mean when you are randomly listening to the radio and every single ruddy song gets processed in your mind as a comparison to the characters and pairings in the series... it's obsessive. sweatdrop Something about the plot, characters, mystery, or world drew me in and locked me in there. I wanted to stay in that world and so I wrote fanfiction. I don't have a problem with the author's canon, and because of my obsessive nature with the series, my fics can be expected to remain as canon as possible.

That is the reason I write fanfics. The reason I post them is entirely different. And I won't get into them now as my hand is throbbing. xp

But, I like exploring missing scenes and different points of view, I like experimenting with my writing style, and I wholly love creating situations that mess with the characters' minds.

So yeah, obsession mixed with a healthy desire to write and improve my skills.

My main fandoms are usually my favorite books or manga/anime because I know them so well it's easier to write them. I never really do stories on things I don't know about because I get confused with the names and I don't know how the characters are suppose to act.

It appears through my late night reading (apologies if I get it wrong, my brain is half asleep) there are two major powers through this thread - a discussion first and foremost about our respective fandoms and then about canon pairings within it.

If I missed something, let me know.

As far as fandom's go, if you know the series I'm obsessed with even remotely - my avatar should be enough to give me away, otherwise it's Final Fantasy Seven - though I do like Eight as well as the person a few above me.

The reason for my obsession? Well it certainly isn't the dead-weight, butter-knife wielding boy from a town population of incest. But then, it's also not for playboy bunny of the year with breasts that defy physics, or the kleptomaniac ninja with motion sickness. Not for Mr.T and certainly not for the flaming cat (not in a gay way of course - though you read some very interesting things).

It's not for the vampire with no life or personality traits. Or for the random sky pirate that comes from texas from a land very far away from his own.

I love it because I can say all of those things and sit happily with a smirk.

Now it was said before that character bashing is disrespectful, I believe it's all about how you do it. Or you could just consider that what I said was disrespectful to the creator, my idol - Tetsuya. Depends on opinion.

Mine is that people take fanfiction too seriously most days. Sometimes we get so wrapped in who's the best character and why you hate this character that you forget in the end all we're doing is writing stories about:

"An obsession from the always impending doom of being the fairer sex and being saved by said above dead weight wielding butter knife boy. Who develops slight necrophilia characteristics and hails from a town population of 12, which includes the incest numbers, but should not be speculated that it actually happened. But it would explain a lot."

My opinion is that we need to laugh at ourselves a little more, which in the end is why I love Seven.

But everyone had valid and respectable points. There is a very diverse group in here, it's nice.

Awesomely put. ^^

But this is actually a hard question to answer. Personally, there are lots of shows and books and games that I like, but I only feel the need to write for a few. I think it's those fandoms that have characters or situations that were insufficiently explored by the original author (for whatever reason) that make me want to write or read fanfiction.

For instance, one of my current fandoms is Naruto and I read and write fanfiction about it because the actual manga barely mentions my favourite character, the Fourth Hokage. Also, since fanfiction is the only means through which I'll ever get to see him alive, I write for this fandom. Conversely, I'm also a fan of Final Fantasy VIII, but the game left me perfectly content. There's nothing I wish could have happened, or was left wondering about, so I don't feel a need to dabble on fanfiction for this one. Same thing with Harry Potter and about a million other shows.

So I guess the conclusion is that I write to fill in the gaps of my obsessions that the authors failed to cover in their works.
