I've always been curious about this, but never really had the nerve to ask until now. Everyone writes in a fandom of their choice, some even write in multiple...but why? What attracts you it? Is it the character design, the particular style that its done in, just a general like (or dislike) for how the officlial series is done? I guess it would be only fair for me to begin as I'm the one asking.
I write for the Pokèmon fandom exclusivly in the fanfiction department for multiple reasons. The strongest one has always been a love for the series, not the anime and how it butchers both the concept and the characters but the game. There's just something I find appealing about working with such dangerous yet cute creatures, a sort of kinship with them I suppose. The anime and even the game to a certain degree try to tone down its own creations, turning what normally would be a highly dangerous animal into something that a ten year old is allowed to own and train. Personally, I feel that its quite stupid that these creatures endure the human idiocy, but that's just me.
Another reason has been mentioned, but I'll expand upon it too. I absolutely despise how the anime portrays Pokèmon. You take a great concept; creatures of might and magic and package them into a sugar coated box force fed to young kids to teach stupid lessons through flashy colors and 'working together'. Then there's the name I'm sure at least some would agree with me is overused; Ash Ketchum AKA Golden Boy. A Berry Stu character and human mascot for the entire franchise; imbued both with an amazing threashold for pain AND the amazing ability to run into every single one of a kind creature, this plague upon the very concept of the series somehow continues to move on despite a nearly uncountable number of near deaths and things that should have ended his life long ago.
Lastly, its a secret. xd (If you get that, you win a cookie)
In closing, I'm sorry if my ranting has offended anyone, but the Pokèmon series is something I take quite seriously; unlike a large amount of the ff.net writers for that fandom do. I'm not saying that any whom write there and are a member of this guild are among that blacklist, but I do hope that those besides me taking refuge here try not to take offense at my rather blunt opinions toward Pokèmon fic writers.

For me, I like to write about my favorite characters. Yes, I'll admit I'm hopelessly obsessed dedicated to my top five. For example, I only have two Naruto fics up so far, both with Gaara, my favorite in the series. For now, the only interest I have at the moment, in terms of Naruto fanfiction, are ones about him. It's not that I don't like any other characters, it's just that Gaara captures my attention more, and with that comes inspiration for my writing.
Also, fanfiction, for me, isn't something I use to retaliate against the original plots. I'm happy with most of my fandoms and, even if I wasn't, I doubt I would still change it. Thus, I have no desire to write general fanfics. I would much rather write a story focusing on a favorite character. I don't mean to say that it's only my absolute favorite characters and the fandoms they belong to I will write about, but it is more fun and interesting that way.
I also get swayed by the world the fandom is set in. I like fantasy, so I prefer writing in settings like those of Naruto, Harry Potter, and Avatar, compared to a normal, modern day city. The one exception to this would be JTHM since, while the setting may be normal, the plot has this dark, supernatural, psychological tone to it - and, of course, humor, which is basically the whole point of the comic.
I plan to branch out a more in my writing; I'm just waiting for inspiration to strike. However, the fandoms I really want to write in are the ones that hold my top five characters. They also belong to the type of setting I like. So, you can definitely see a pattern.
I'd say that I'm also determined by how much I am obsessed dedicated to a particular fandom. For example, I love SpongeBob and I Love Lucy; they are two of my favorite shows. But, I don't think I would write a fanfiction about them. My adoration isn't as - ah - easily driven as it is for other fandoms.

either because I love the fandom so much that I just want to have my part in it/ I wish there were more to it - expansion/alternate choices and paths/ and of course with books and games - if the story line has room for more and I know more is coming, but I just don't think I can wait till the next one comes on.
(my fandoms include: Kingdom Hearts, Star Wars, Sailor Moon, X-men Evolution, .Hack//, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, Deltora Quest, Harry Potter, 101 Dalmatians and James Bond.)

I write in the Digimon fandom because that was the one that really got me into the whole fanfiction lark. My friend at the time introduced me to it, and I wanted to be a part of it. And I'll continue to write in that fandom until my love for it dies out. It's just what I do.
As for Yugioh, MeruPuri, Ouran High School Host Club, Gravitation and Beyblade, I've got a squealing, boylove-worshipping fangirl side to me. If I see an anime/read a manga and see a pairing that appeals to me, I have to write it. It's almost compulsory for me; I just won't feel satisfied until I've fully expressed my support for that pairing.

This actually got me thinking. Now even I am starting to wonder why I write in my fandom. Inuyasha is one of the largest fandoms out there and not a good one to start if you are starting out and trying to get noticed. However, the anime is the one I started off with getting hooked and now its the manga. I know most about it and have a deep feel of the characters. A fanfiction for Inuyasha actually got me writing. It gave me my own ideas and I felt I had to get them out there.
I also brainstorm in the Gundam Seed fandom but haven't written much yet, I dont know for sure if I will. This reason is mostly because Gundam Seed Destiny was a bust (I am still watching it) but I know they trash my favorite pairing of all time. While there still is a spark for them to get back together I think I can do it better.
So I guess in I write in my fandoms because I am arrogant? And think I can do better. Not necessarily. I just think my views give a different spin to the idea of the series, more in depth and I'd like to get that out there.

I am a Yugioh authoress.
I started out like many on fanfiction with a badly written Mary Sue in love with one of the main characters.
But why the Yugioh fandom, you ask?
There are numerous things. When I first heard of the show, I thought it sounded like the stupidest thing on earth. There was nothing in the world that would have compelled me to watch it.
But I did.
It was the first episode, a duel between Yugi Mouto and Seto Kaiba. I had been flipping channels and suddenly, there it was. I was expecting to watch Pokemon, I believe (because I watched that frequently back then), but they had changed the line-up. And that was it.
I hated the entire dueling prospect of the show. The universe constantly being saved by playing card games? No it was the entire plot of it. Who was the mysterious spirit that inhabited the Millennium Puzzle? Why was Pegasus so interested in it? And it continued.
Characterization was another thing that fascinated me.
Seto Kaiba, an orphan who forced a billionaire weapons designer to adopt both him and his little brother by winning a game of chess. A cold, calculating genius who took control of his step-father's company and is supposed to have murdered the man in cold blood (he shoved him out a window).
Maximillion Pegasus (Pegasus J. Crawford, as I prefer to call him), an eccentric game creator, devastated by the loss of his wife, pining away as he struggled to find a way to revive her. Only to come to Egypt and be gifted and cursed with the Millennium Eye.
Serenity Wheeler, separated from her beloved older brother but a quick divorce of their parents and saved from her impending blindness only by her older brother’s kindness.
And the list goes on.
I’ve looked at other fandoms. Avatar, Danny Phantom, Sailor Moon. But for some reason, non of the characters really appealed to me in the same way the Yugioh cast does.
I’ve established every ounce of my writing skills through the Yugioh fandom and made numerous friends. I can immediately recognize the user-names of a myriad of my reviewers. The Yugioh fandom provides me with…familiarity. Its probably the only website I’ve ever really called a home. And that’s a nice feeling for me.
I’ve never written to adjust the series. I doubt I would change it at all, if given the choice (save for I would have NEVER let 4kids create the GX spinoff.) I write because I like to see the characters in a plot away from their norm. And for some characters (Serenity Wheeler/Shizuka Kawai particularly) it gives me a chance to develope the small pieces of their personalities that were not fully explained in the series.
But I really love writing with Pegasus. heart

I don't really know. For example, Code Lyoko is my favorite show of all time, but I have sworn a solemn pact to never, ever write fanfiction for it. I have no idea why, except that I don't think I could get away with it without looking like a complete hypocrite. I also don't write fanfictions for books or movies. TV shows for me. Usually what happens is I get temporarily obsessed with a show, and then I have a weird dream or hear a song on the radio that somehow gives me an idea, and then I let that idea sit in my head for a while. If it doesn't do anything, then I know I just can't write for that particular show. If it does do something, then it usually has to wait to be written until I;ve finished another story, and by that time it will be extremely long. I have one Digimon fanfiction that I've posted a few chapters of that gets rid of all my Digimon fanfiction ideas in one fell swoops. It's going ot take forever to finish, and while I'm trying ot do that, I'm watching all the episodes of Oban Star-Racers on youtube, and I am rapidly gaining ideas for a fanfiction on that. The life of a writer with no attention span can be challenging indeed.

It's amazing how so many different reasons can lead someone to the same end; like a maze of strings all ending in one ball of yarn. Don't get me wrong, I feel that diversity in writing is a great thing; without it, every work would be the exact same thing with plug and play characters. And I guess nobody gets the joke... sad Edit: Anilates But I really love writing with Pegasus. heart Best reason yet. xd

Pegasus J. Crawford is paws down the single most brilliant character to ever appear within the first Yu-gi-oh series; and I say that with honesty, not fanatic agreement. Out of the entire cast, only he had any real flair; with 'he's going to win so where's the suspense' Yugi, 'bad accent and just supporting role' Joey Wheeler, 'the cheering squad' Tea Gardner and Tristin (don't know if he has a last name), 'screw the rules I have money' Seto Kaiba, and a host of obnoxious filler characters Pegasus really stands out.
And the joke is from an anime called Slayers Tri; one of the characters used that line a lot.

OMFG blaugh blaugh blaugh You've been watching the Abridged series. heart Tristan Taylor, by the way. lol And you know the funniest part of my newly (not terrribly new. its been over a year, actually] fashioned obsession/ respect for Pegasus? In the very beginning of the series, I despised him. Completly and totally. But after writing my first PegasusxSerenityxKaiba triangle, I suddenly fell in love with both his esscentirc nature and heartful quest for Cecilia. And then he became I regular on Yugioh: GX....which was a sad, sad thing. But he is the only one fantastic enough to have a flashback within a flashback. lol. And I'm sorry, I still don't get your joke. sweatdrop I mean it makes sense now, of course, but I've never seen that anime.

Slayers Tri is more of a cult classic anime than anything; embodying the general 'fantasy psycho sorceress' feel.
Yeah...Pegasus is a very eccentric if not off the wall character.
Edit: (3 seconds, a new record) Yeah, Yu-gi-oh the abridged series is addictive. Ran across it by accident and fell in love with the horribly accurate humor of it. Borat Shadi is my favorite, followed very closely by Bandit Keith and Bones, in America.

"I'm a kajillion times richer than you, so therefore I'm a kajillion times smexier than you as well. Everyone knows smexiness and money go hand in hand."
Best line next to Rex and Weevil doing their own shorts.
Anyway, getting back on topic. I have created a few characters for other fandoms, but when I look back at my old notes the rather disturbing Mary Sueish qualities drive me further away from ever considering working out those ideas.
