I gave nicknames to some of the horses I rode at camp: Nutmeg was Nutter Butter, Sophie was Soph or Sofers, and General was Gen.
EDIT: One of my counselors said Sophie was "So-phie-rustrating"(So frustrating).

My trainer calls my new horse Toonces sometimes, like in the Saturday Night Live skit "Toonces the driving cat".

My daughter's old pony was Casey but I called him Buttheadicus - because he was! His registered name was 'Just in Case' because he was so small they thought just in case he grows up to a reall QH! He finally hit 14hh - but forever had short man complex - the little jerk... I mean darling.

I picked up the habit somewhere of calling every male horse I come in contact with "Dude". I don't know why. "Pony" and "Baby" are common ones as well.
A few have specifics. Kampari is Pari, Kampers, or Donkey. Harry is Grouchface Chaco is My sweet boy, Paso Pony, and pretty much anything else that comes out of my mouth as I'm working with him. Merlin is Murmer or little yellow pony Marshmellow is Mellow, Mellowhead, Round thing, Fat round pony, Yellow pony #2 (they're both halflingers) Gordon is Gordo Robbie is Llama or the Dr. Seuss horse. (You'd understand if you saw him...)

i have my friend to witness to this. we went out into the field to catch my horse, and when a was a ways away i called her name, nothing, called again when we were a little closer, then called out 'gorgeous', and she instantly brought her head up and walked towards us! xd it was hillarious. other than that, i dont have many names, her name is anna, so anna banana, miss anna, crabby pants (because shes the undisputed leader of the world razz ).

My horses name was Pixie but the lady we got her from called her Pixie Dixie so we stuck with Dixie and didnt find out 'til a few months ago lol. Then my mom, of all people, nicknamed her hell b***h because she use to charge, bite, and kick at people. surprised I just can't believe my mom said those words lol.We also have alot of nicknames for the other horses there. I think the only 1 that didnt was Fancy because that fits her perfect...but then they sold her. crying Well theres alot of other horses so I won't get into all thier nicknames lol.

I've noticed an odd trend that I tend to shorten horse's names that have two or more syllables, and give longer names to horses with one syllable names.
Raffi becomes Raff. Doc because Doccus Ben becomes Benjamin Zorro becomes Z Bjorn becomes B Valuer is V or Gorgeous Shy becomes Shyshy MacDuff is Duff Ric becomes grouchface, spotted one, or Mr. Ric Chippy becomes Chip Skoal becomes Sassypants or Skoal the Pirate King Kat becomes Kitten Mahon becomes May
etc. I think I just have an aversion to calling horses by their given names.
