My piccolo is a crappy one from ebay, venus brand :/. It's not a bad piccolo, really, except that I keep having trouble with the pads that basically renders it useless.
Otherwise, it is fun to play.

I love my Yamaha piccolo. It has such a nice sound. I've seen colored piccolos. They seem cool to have. I could walk around and be like, "HEY, RANDOM DUDE! I HAVE A PURPLE PICCOLO! ISN'T THAT AWESOME?!" I would probably do that. sweatdrop

I have 2 piccolos. One is for inside and it is entirely wood. The other is for outside(marching band) and that is entirely plastic.

Chihiro_Hyuuga Is the headjoint plastic? I've never seen an all plastic piccolo before. yeah. It looks like a wood one only its all plastic. Its just a geminhardt... I love playing piccolo but everyone else in my section hates it(well, except for a girl who can't play flute so we don't let her play since you can hear all of the mistakes). I don't know why... I think its cute and fun!

Gurgle can't convince her father to let her get a piccolo
and I'm saving up for a new flute Lawrence (my 10 year old hand-me-down student level) needs it's pad's changed... and my parents and I figured that if we were going to have to spend $300+ for a pad change I might as well get an intermidiate.

yeah, its probably best if you get a new flute. I'd get a new flute before I got a piccolo. You can always rent a piccolo if you really want to play one. Piccolos can get expensive. I depends on what kind and everything. plastic will be the cheapist. If you are planning on doing any playing outside, I suggest getting a plastic one. If you want a good quality one, get a wood one (they're the most expensive but they sound great. You CANNOT take it outdoors to play it). Then you have your metal ones. I wouldn't suggest getting one of those unless you get a solid silver one. They can get expensive but you CAN take them outdoors. I really suggest getting a plastic one for your first piccolo. then you can get used to playing piccolo (unless you already play) without having to worry about it cracking in temperature changes. Geminhardt doesn't make too bad of a piccolo. I've only played their plastic one for marching band though. I have a roy seaman for regular band. Its a good piccolo. Its wood though. I was looking online and I saw this one brand of piccolo (I forget the name) but it went down to a low c. Wow. Sorry I wrote so much! I hope this was helpful though! biggrin

gakihime Thats why you grab the first flute part too and play the flute part when you're not playing piccolo.... my band conductor doesnt quite agree on that. words of Dr.Takahisa Ota ; "to achieve great ability, one needs to focus on ONE instrument. i am not saying that i dont allow you to double-up on the flute. but think of the possibilities...." and i'm like... "WHAT POSSIBILITIES????!!" i think he just learned that word. his english is bad. lol. i decided to double up anyways. i kinda tend to panic to pick-up which instrument when playing fast pieces. lol.

So this is my first year on piccolo for marching. Actually this is my first time marching in general [I've been in the Color Guard but they asked me to switch so I did...to piccolo because I'm strongest on flute...and they need a piccolo because our old piccolo is now drum major...]
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you could give me tips for playing piccolo, especially tone and support. And any possible tips to help me remain calm during this season. I'm so nervouuuuus!

I've been playing flute for about 4 years now. My parents are getting me a piccolo this summer, and I might play it for just concert band. I've borrowed the school's piccolo, but I haven't really mastered it since I'm not allowed to have it for more than an hour at a time.
