We, the members of the Lit Mag, have a problem: the banner on the homepage is too bland. I will draw one and create a contest to see who can color it the best.
I've got a cheerful, modestly dressed girl (the graphics on her clothing - or lack thereof - are left up to the colorist) meant to emphasize openness, which may entice more members to join. The current banner exudes a serious-to-the-point-of-being-dull vibe which cannot possibly be good for membership.
Between her arms will be (color/font as yet unknown) "The Lit Mag" and under it in smaller text of the same style will be "A guild for the serious artist and author". The background will be left up to the colorist.
I know that it's a bit restrictive to do a pre-drawn banner, but I think we'll get more submissions this way. What do you think of my idea? Also, what do you guys think of letting non-members join the contest? Any ideas on fonts? (Note: they will either be black or white outlined in black.)
Note: Since I can't ink a lineart decently to save my life, I've paid AnimeJet to do it for me, just so it looks professional.Click to see the picture!

sounds good to me, although this is really not my forte. I'm more the generate-new-work /edit-the-work type.. i suck at trying to recolor someone else's work. just not my thing.

Fair enough. Everyone has their own preferences and strong points. Thanks for replying. I've already started on the sketch and I think that it's turning out okay, though I think that I may have underestimated the difficulty of finding a good inker.

I think it's an excellent idea. That banner was starting to bug me as well: it's stuffy, it's uninteresting, it's monochromatic... I also think it's a good idea to let non-members join the contest. At best, you'll be recruiting more people into the guild, and at worst... can't think of anything.
Can't wait to see your banner, it sounds great! ^^

Well, the good news is that I got a pretty good inker. The bad news is that it's going to cost me a pretty penny. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-60k pretty penny. *Sigh* Time to sell some stockpiled donation items. After selling seven for the Goti Clips, I'm down to about, ehhh... 15 stocked items/letters, and I'm going to have to sell 3, maybe 4, plus my kimono. Grr...!

Okay, I know that it's absolutely gigantic, but here is my not-so-little picture. I think I did a pretty good job, especially for taking only 1-1.5 hours to do it. I'm getting faster at drawing. YAY! Okay, I'll shut up now and show you what you really want to see - the picture!
Note: AnimeJet will probably finish inking this within the week. Probably. ...I'm so excited! *squee!*Click to see the picture!EDIT by Cyn: Sorry, Aurah, I put a link instead of the image, because it was stretching the page and wrecking havoc on my poor 480x600 resolution...!

Thanks a lot, Cyn! That really helps. I think we have it now. YAY! ^_^
Note: No problem about just leaving the picture link. I didn't realize quite how big it would be. ^_^"""

Now that we have a picture/mascot (I shall henceforth refer to her as Sossal, since that is the name of our mailwoman. Depending on the colors of the winning entry, I may change Sossal-the-account's look, but please don't worry about that while you're coloring the banner. I can handle that later.) and her inking is already arranged, there are now a couple of new dilemmas.
1. Is everyone okay with Sossal being our mascot?
2. What about fonts? Anybody got any good ones? As a note, the font color will either be black or white outlined in black (which would allow it to be colored).
Thanks so much for your support and suggestions, everyone, especially PadawanCyn who was nice enough to donate 5k and a Flame Sword to the fund. Thank you, everybody! You guys keep this guild going. ^_^

may i suggest monotype corsiva? it is elegant, yet still simple enough to be easy to read.

Aurah likes it! Any other suggestions?
From my own "font quest", I found Technical and IceAgeD. Technical is a pretty typical, upright font. However, IceAgeD, the one I prefer, looks like the stereotypical old-newpaper-print font from those black and white movies. Both are fairly easily read. I currently have a word document going that displays all the fonts that we have so far in the form of the text for the banner. Once we get in all the suggestions I'll figure out a way to let you all see my sheet.
Thanks, duello! ^_^

if you have the page open on your desktop and push the "PrtSc" key (print screen) it will place a screen shot on your computer's clipboard. then you can simply open a program like paintshop, photoshop, or even ms pain works, paste the image, save it, and upload it to whatever image hosting site you use. personaly i use photobucket.com. from there it's easy to link it in here for us. and that way we dont need to have the various fonts on our machine to view the document.

stare You're paying someone 50-60k gold just for inking your art?? gonk And if you're talking about replacing the mini-banner, the dimensions of the artwork aren't good. The girl should have her arms higher & spread wider, or you'll have to reduce the image so much no one is going to see your expensive inks or much of the detail. Sorry to sound harsh, but that's just the way it is.

No, I specified the banner on the homepage, which is the big one. This banner, once resized, should do fine. And from what I saw of AnimeJet's inking style, shrinking shouldn't reduce quality, either. I already told her she could shrink to ink if she wanted to, anyway. Thanks for letting me know, though. Good to see you again!
Note: Sadly, simply inking pictures is a very rare service and it's ever rarer to find someone who can do a decent digital job (especially for a picture of this complexity), so I must pay a very high price. I don't like it, either!
