Because in America, we've grown a fondness towards Anime. In doing so, America copied calling it Anime as well. But is it really Anime if it's made elsewhere besides where it originated?

I've had that debate with people before. It makes my head hurt. gonk I think we finally decided that "anime" is a style; therefore, anime-style American cartoons are still anime.

Of course, that theory is blown out of the water if you assert that anime is cultural and, therefore, directly connected to Japan and its culture.

On the other other hand, parmesan cheese still tastes the same even though most of it is no longer made in Parmesan, Italy. neutral

-Cartoons are ment for 12yeardolds and rearelly go outside that range. Anime is usualy meant or everyone or a certain group, but in total it can be watched by anyone. ...

Okay, time for one of my trademark "omg too many words!" rant.

My opinion? Not all of them are Anime.

Let me explain that better.

Anime is a style, not a nationality. I've seen excellent Anime made in china and Korea before the whole "OMG NA ANIME!!!!!1" thing begun. Now, if we're talking about Bugs Bunny, Ed Edd and Eddy or Danny Phantom, they're not anime, they're not using the style (big eyes have existed for eons, they're not exclusive to Anime) hence they're not Anime. But if you look at Avatar, Martin Mystery or (yuck) Totally Spies, then they either are Anime, or are trying hard to be (in the last case) and failing.

And nope, not all toons are for 12 years old. Want an example? Aeon Flux. It's not anime, and it's not for kids either. There's a few more around (City Hunter, Futurama, The Simpsons...) and some that are going in and out of "not for kids" land, too.

Besides, I never understood how some "toons" could be considered harmless for kids, what with the gunfights between Elmer and Bugs, or Jerry's habit of blowing Tom's head off for no reason other than he was a bitchy mouse. (Awesome teachings in both shows, really. Kill thy neighbour!)

And then some parents b***h at how Vegetta gets turned into a fishnet every twenty episodes... Old toons did that daily and nobody cares. Unfair! crying

And there you're threading even darker waters.

Manga and comics have little to no difference other than the drawing style. A lot of the comic series around are darker than some (most) manga, and some manga are lighter than comics meant for kids.

Well I for one think that anime is based on the style of how it is animated and by the content in the show. If it is animated in a manga looking way then it is probably anime, if it looks like anything that would be on CartoonNetwork, Nickelodeon, Fox, Comedy Central, or any other tv brodcasting system like them they are certainly not anime. As for the content, if it is G-PG 10 it usually isn't anime, the only times when there are anime at that rating is when they are censored to a level where any child can see it, an example would be Naruto. The exceptions are when they are on things such as Toonami and Adult Swim. They have featured a lot of anime like, Gundam Wing, Naruto, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Z, and many more. There a few American styled animes which I would consider anime, one of them is Kappa Mikey. Well this is end of my rant and I hope it helps you decide on what you think is an "actual anime."

to some people anime is like japanese cartoons but more detailed and has a better plot. i guess i agree but anime is just anime

No matter how good your responses are, I still stand by my opinion about anime. Cartoons are not anime, anime can only be made in Japan. Anime is made for everyone's viewing or a certain audience's viewing [i.e. hentai]. Futurama, Family Guy, etc. are cartoons not appropriate for kids and I agree, but they are from Adult Swim. I consider Adult Swim a totally different cartoon-airing station. Sure, they are directed at a different audience but one audience only: teens. Sure, on Fox there is American Dad and The Simpsons, but that is because they want to copy Adult Swim and expand their audience range.

Anime belongs to Japan. It is part of their culture. Can't we just let them have their own thing? Actually, I think we should just forget this whole thing. Cartoons in America are going to die, definitely. America is now making many more live-action shows and kids like them more. There are seven-year-olds who prefer CSI to...trying to think of a cartoon...erm...Kim Possible. The cartoon audience gets smaller everytime they release a new show like Hannah Montana. On Disney Channel, there are only four cartoons that actually show when people are awake: American Dragon, Kim Possible, Emperor's New School, and The Replacements. Disney used to be all about cartoons, but now it's all live-action.
