Do you guys remember when you began appreciating indie things? The question just popped into my head and I got curious. For me, it was when I was listening to The Hush Sound in 2006. They're not exactly indie, although they're not exactly mainstream. They were heavily influenced by several indie bands such as This Is Me Smiling, Elliot John, Fiona Apple and Sondre Lerche, so I began checking the artists out. How about you guys? biggrin

To be honest it was when Death Cab was indie. Then my friend who showed them showed me into The Postal Service, The Decemberists and then I just caught on from that. Oh and My Ex girl friend showed me some stuff but it was mostly personal discoveries.

For me, it was hearing Broken Social Scene somewhere, and getting into them, and then hearing bands related to them.

Bloc Party, "Helicopter" music video on MuchMusic. Through them I was thrown head first into Indieland, floating on the hovering virus, the world bowed and opened me up to a new view.

I'd say around 2004 my friend just told me a lot of bands and then I kind of researched indie music (since there's a huge list of artists on wikipedia) and figured out what I liked.
It was prolly The Unicorns that got me started, actually.

I got my mom a Sirius satellite radio almost two years ago. I started listening to the station Left of Center and liked the bands on there like Fugazi and Death Cab for Cutie.

About 3 years ago when my dad introduced me to The Libertines. A few months later he took me to see The Subways and Mystery Jets (Well, Mystery Jets were supporting, but I prefered them to the main band).

I first heard They Might Be Giants when I was, like, two. And listened to bunch of classic rock my dad had and I started boardening my horizons almost instantly. I was the only girl through my grades who liked pop music like The Spice Girls and Billy Joel.
I started avidly searching for new music at the end of middle school. I'm about to be a senior in highschool... so, it's possible I have been for the majority of my life. :P *showoff*
