I'm playing Chopin's Ballade No. 1 this year, and I have no clue what else to play that goes along with it. >.>
Can anyone suggest a really modern piece that's like... difficult... like... medium-high difficult?

I'm not too familiar with "contemporary" contemporary music. >_>;

My friend did the Diemer Toccata...she apparently learnt it in a month and promptly put it on her recital programme, so maybe it's not too hard to learn? But then again, she is a much better pianist than myself XD

It does involve banging on piano strings though. >w<

Lucky you. I wish I could play Chopin's 1st Ballade.

Like Wings, I am not an expert on contemporary music. Does Prokofiev count? But then again, his Piano Sonatas can be devilishly difficult...

If it were me, I'd just try and compose something for it.

Perhaps Elton John? I'm not quite sure of anyone else who's big on piano these days. Or, you could try Horowitz's variation on Bietz's Carmen.

You mean Bizet, surely?

If I had the sheet music written down for the more difficult ones, I would send them to you. Unfortunately, I can hardly play some of them, let alone put aside the time to write them down. The easier ones I've written down, like my "Three Little Waltzes". However, the 1st and 3rd Movements of my Piano Sonata elude me...

Ha, no. I'm saying that I can't write them down! That said, my Piano Concerto in D flat has the makings of being extremely difficult. There are some really fast octave sections for both hands...

Try the Koln Concert by Keith Jarret, bloody difficult. Well, I think it is anyway. Would provide a good contrast too, however you really need to listen to it before you play to really get the style and stuff. It's my summer project.

You could always just improvise, and start whacking as many keys as you can, and then say it's by a modern composer from Japan...
