RP means role play. So just play a role! It's as simple as that. mrgreen

Ok each RP has its own setting, these can be made up situations of real life, or anime, games, D&D sorts of worlds, so some knowledge of the setting is good (Read a harry potter book or two for a harry potter RP for example)

other than thats its really just make your own character and write out your character's actions and interact with people.

But don't piss them off cause then you got less people to have fun with... RPing is like a game, you try to win, but you can't cheat.

I wouldn't say you're so much "trying to win".....It's kind of like you're telling a story with other people, only you play one role (role playing, RPing, in essence) and the story takes twists and turns depending on what you and the other people do. There's many different styles, as in, the tense (past, present) varies, as does the way people write, and it just depends on your level of literacy. What that means is, you could either write like this:

-goes over to you- Here's that book you wanted. -walks away-

Or like this:

She went over to Elizabeth and smiled at her. "Here's that book you wanted," she said, handing Elizabeth the heavy volume before walking away.

I hope that helps, please PM me if you need any more help.

RPing is pretty much just a game of pretending. You pretend to be someone along with other people who are pretending to be someone and you interact with each other in a pretend place doing pretend things.

Also I like to think of it as writing a book and reading one at the same time. You write what your character does and says and then you read what other people's characters do and say.

Definitions I've heard:

Collaborative fiction with one person for overall guidance
The obvious "Playing a Role"

My Favorite:

"It's written make-believe for anyone older than ten."

I would suggest you read the "Your Guide to the SDRP Guild" Sticky. Also, joining an RP will teach you a lot more than just reading about them.

General guidelines for the RPer. Generally RPing is an art, there must, of course, be a charachter. You can do like I did and introduce a charachter that is nothing more than a name and a pic and have others build a story as you go, or you can make one up on your own. There are several threads around here that can help with that. But that's only the beginning, you must also have an RP style, many rules posted on the first page of a thread give some general guide lines. Most RP's are semi literate meaning the posts look something like this:

Semi-Lit
That one guy walks into the bar and sits at a table. "I need a drink."

Short sweet and to the point. Others are Literate, like so:

Lit
John, seeing a quaint little bar decides to investigate, though he needed a drink any way. As he walks in his boots make a dull thunk against the wood floor. Making his way through the bustling seating area he sits at the bar and places his order with the bar keep. "I'll have a scotch on the rocks."

Notice the detail, I kept it short just to save time but you get the idea. Then there's the Illiterate.

Illiterate
*walks into bar and sits* Nice place... *grabs drink and sips it*

You get the idea, basically bread and butter, while the others are Full Meals. The true master of the RP can write pages without even trying. Sadly I'm not there yet.

The most important thing though is to have fun!
