"Kat, c'mon!" Jamey prodded, skating rings around her little brother. After several weeks of prodding, Russell had given in and bought his daughter a pair of roller blades. What the Ditty had actually wanted were Heelys, but a garage-sale pair of skates was infinitely cheaper than a pair of those bastardized sneakers.
Katurian murmured slightly before pushing himself, ever so slowly, to his feet. As soon as he was steady, Michal hopped from the bench beside Russell and ran to Jamey's side, barking in her strange, whuffing voice.
See! she squealed, but of course, no one but Katurian heard her.
The day was mild and sunny enough, but the big, white clouds seemed to be threatening to turn gray at any moment. The bench Russell had chosen to sit on was under a tree, just in case.

"Merric, stop tugging, we're almost to the park." Flame mentioned with a sigh as she went with her littler priate and young daughter. Tamal had her eyes closed as she felt the sun soak into her bark like skin. Tamal ate but she always felt more refreshed, more...full after a sun nap, or a good healthy rain. Being wet didn't get Tamal sick, being dry did, if it was for too long.
"Park!" Merric called out determained to play, determained to have fun and hopefully find something kind of shiny for him to play with. The pirate loved shinny things, sadly his mom rarely let him keep anything. Especailly when he took it from other people, though he kind of liked taking things from other people.
His mother didn't though.
"Come on Merric, I'll show you the sandbox, I bet you'll like that." Tamal said softly, taking her little brother's hand from Flame. The fairy neko realized how much Tamal tried to take over so Flame could rest and didn't think it was healthy for the girl to spend all her time with her littel brother.
"I'll take him Tamal, why don't you go play?" Flame asked.

Jamey's head swiveled at the sound of a voice. The little boy it had come from looked normal enough, except for his eye, but the other girl and the woman the two were with... they looked way more fun than her family!
She rolled over, Katurian and a suddenly subdued Michal following behind more slowly. "I was just going to the sandbox," she said, her childish 'let's be friends' openers sorely in need of some work. "What are you?" she added to the bark-skinned girl, as if being an incredibly ugly, gravel-voiced child wasn't equally as weird. Jamey glanced at Flame as well. Wings!
Katurian finally caught up, dropping to a seated position and roughly patting Michal's head as she settled next to him. He didn't look up at the other kids, almost as if he hadn't noticed they were there.

Tamal blinked as the odd looking human walked up to them and just started to talk. For a moment Tamal thought maybe she'd be nice...but then she asked the question. Tamal blinked once, then looked down and away, ashamed of how she looked.
"I'm nothing, doesn't matter." Tamal said quickly, tears almost there when Flame reached down to place a hand on her shoulder and smiled down at the two...kids.
"Tamal is a Ditty, she came from a song about a tree, that's why she looks like a tree." Flame easplained easily, stroking the girl's shoulder, "She's very special, you see?" Flame asked, but was looking at Tamal who kept her head down.
She hated being special, being different. She wanted skin like everyone else.

Jamey looked slightly confused at Tamal's words, but quickly perked up again when Flame mentioned the girl had come from a song. "Me too!" she said, scissoring her feet back and forth in place. "Rus said it was the most godawful thing he'd ever heard." She smiled widely, but when she saw Tamal's bowed head, Jamey realized she must have done something wrong.
"W...well I didn't mean it was bad!" she said. "I've just never seen bark for skin before, that's all! Everyone I know's got boring skin, all pink and tan and blotchy when they get sad or when I tell them their underwear's hangin' out of their shorts." She punctuated nearly every other word with a fist, lightly pounded against her thigh. "Like this," she said, pinching her own arm. "And this." She reached down and pinched Katurian's shoulder, earning her a loud shriek that sounded a lot like 'hey.' "The only interesting one in my family is her," she said, pointing at Michal. "I wasn't trying to be mean," she muttered, looking down at her skates. "Sorry."

Merric was tired of all this conversation that didn't revolve around shiny things, sand, or the ocean. He pouted as he strugled to free himself from the group. He didn't need any of that. He just wanted to play in the sand.
"Sand!" the baby screamed, tugging twords the sand box. Flame smiled as she realized this would be a good time to let Tamal try to get her own friends and slipped away to the sand box so Merric could play. The fairy neko smiled a little as she sat down on the side of the box while Merric climbed in. The mother would have helped, if Merric would have accepted it.
Tamal on the other hand was shifting a little, looking down. "It's not your fault. Kids like to make fun of me, I don't get why. Even Victor teases, even though he isn't trying to be mean or anything, he can't help it Mama says. Mama says Victor was just born that stupid." Tamal gave Jamey a shy grin, then looked down again. At least the girl wasn't trying to be mean, maybe she wasn't that bad anyway.
"What are you doing?" Tamal asked, looking down at the skates.
