It should come to no suprise to anybody that I hate the "beta" version of TokyoPop's layout. And if it does, then you just haven't been hanging around my soapbox often enough. whee

But today was just the straw that broke the camel's back. I was poking justmanga's most recent releases and there was a 1st volume of a series called "Pick of the Litter", but justmanga had no blurby for it. So stupidly, I went to the TokyoPop website and tried to look it up. The search returned... nothing. A blank page. I tried a couple more times to the same result. I poked the site for about 5 more minutes trying to find an email address I could complain to, and typed up this email.

Quote:
To whom it may concern,

I just wanted to shoot a quick note off about the most recent incarnation of the TokyoPop layout. In my opinion, it is the least user-friendly layout you've had so far. When you first switched over, it took me quite a while to figure out where to view descriptions for titles I was interested in. I'm disheartened that I can no longer access a master list of all the manga/manwha that you publish like I could with the "alpha" version of the site (and of the layout before that). I do realize that list was becoming quite large and probably difficult to update, but I'm sure many people would agree with me that it was enjoyable just to browse without having to know any exact titles. Also, with the giant push towards forming a community, I feel that updating titles with release dates has suffered greatly.

I've been a regular TokyoPop customer for at least 10 years now, and my primary interest lays in your products. Not in fanart, fanfiction, or "mangastrology". While I respect your efforts to create a manga community of sorts, I believe you're losing sight of what matters most - the manga & manwha itself.

Sincerely,
Toni Jones

If you also hate the TokyoPop layout, PLEASE email them and tell them so. They need to hear it. I emailed this to: webmaster@tokyopop.com.

It's so hard to get around! It took me 15 minutes just to find the new releases!

I don't like them much either anymore. They've really gone down hill
It just seems like they spend too much time on their OEL manga now-a-days. I mean, it's nice that they're giving a chance for aspiring "Manga" artists to get their work published and become well known, but they stuff they choose to publish really isn't that great and they promote them so much. It just doesn't seem like they care about the Japanese comics anymore. (Except for Fruits Basket of course.)
The only reason I still buy stuff from them is because they translate some of my favorite series. (But that will all change once I learn to read Japanese...someday.)

Anyway, about the site; I really don't like the layout either, but I'm not in a big hurry to email them about it.
Because I really don't like them now and I don't think they're going to change even if they get a whole bunch of emails about it, so I'm just not going to even bother.

Now that you say that you're right. Tokyopop doesn't really seem to care about licensing japanese manga anymore. They seem to be more into publishing amerimanga. Though if I were the artist I would want to get my stuff published to seaven seas.

I wish they'd start going for the Japanese manga more. But I hear they are starting to slump in that category because of competing companies getting all the good stuff before they do so they're trying to make up for it with the OEL manga.
(But I really think they should just do what Del Rey did, sign with a major Japanese publishing company so they'd have first dibs on whatever gets published from them.)
Yes, go for anything BUT Tokyopop if you want your work published. I also heard that if you get something published from Tpop it's like giving your soul away. eek

And their name is TOKYOpop! I guess it's now Ameripop? I know their publishing a manga I want in April which I forget the name... It looks really good.

Yeah, I'd say that 90% of what I used to buy was TokyoPop... but nowadays that title goes to VIZ. VIZ really stepped it up the past couple years.

But I do still collect some TokyoPop titles... Fruits Basket, Metamo Kiss, Nosatsu Junkie, Et Cetera, +ANIMA, Bird Kiss, etc... but trying to look for new stuff they licensed is just a pain in my a** because their website blows. D:

I hate the website, too, but I don't buy much Tokyopop anymore. If I do, it's from the Blu label, which has its own, non-shitty website. I'm pretty much buying all Viz, Blu, and DMP June stuff now.

I only collect SGT. Frog, Kingdom Hearts, Loveless, Rozen Maiden, Chibi Vampire, Tsukiyomi Moon Phase, and Welcome to the NHK! by them. Mostly all my titles are ViZ/SJ

I've bought at least 15 series from Tokyopop. Right now the majority of my collection is from Del Rey and VIZ.

The only Tokyopop title that I'm really actively buying is Tramps Like Us, which is almost over. I'm buying some others, but more passively (Loveless, Peach Girl, Pita Ten, Tokyo Mew Mew *I like it. It's cute*). Other than that, I'm mostly buying Viz, DMP's June, and Blu, then some random Del Rey and Darkhorse things.

I went to the website {which was stupid of me} just to check how bad it was since I hadn't looked at it in months.

Oh. My. What did they do to it? I can't figure out anything on there anymore. *is distressed*
Good thing Vampire Game's over, and Jing just finished. I think I'll be avoiding Tokyopop for a while now while they figure out what their real priorities are.
Pssht, "leading the manga revolution for 10 years" does NOT mean you get to slack off, lazy bums. stare
