The first bass I ever purchased was the Fender Mustang, my main reason being I'm a short little girl with small hands, haha. Since then I've gotten accustomed to full scale basses, though, but the Mustang was a good start. It's a great instrument, but the pick ups are designed more for picking, rather than fingering and popping/slapping. Just get new pick ups for it if you need to and it's a great bass for basically any style.
In another post I raved about how much I like the Schecter Diamond Series C-4 bass, so I have to highly recommend that one. It's a jewel of a bass, and it certainly won't disappoint.
If you're looking for something more expensive, go with an Ocean. Holy s**t. You'd just have to play one to know what I'm talking about.
Hope this helps!

I was debating the mustang because i played it in my guitar shop. I do like teh sound of the Shecter so that might be my choice.

Can't say I've ever played on a B.C. Rich bass before. I wasn't all that impressed with their guitars, though, so I didn't really bother. I'll have to try one out sometime.

what kind of necks do you like? Thin like a soundgear or chunky like a classic P? Or more of a Jazz profile?

Some B.C.Richs will sound good. Obviously people buy them for the looks. I've come to the conclusion that they put piss poor construction to anythign but the multi-thousand guitars.
I bought an Ibanez, it was either 199 or 99 I can't remember. It looks fantastic in a slightly sparkling glossy white finish. It's all smooth and rounded, very comfortable, good weight. It's tone is suprisingly good for it's price. So Ibanez gets my recomendation, they are great for their price.
