Books on Story
"Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting"
by Robert Mckee
Obvious from its title this book is focused on stories with the silver screen as the ultimate goal. But that doesn't mean its a book that teaches you how to write the next cliche, cash-cow milking, hollywood movie on the block. The exact opposite, it provides an in depth look at visual storytelling, much of which can be translated and taken into literary story telling.
Novels
"The Virgin Suicides"
by Jeffrey Eugenides
This book is a great study in style and story telling method. You start out knowing exactly how the book ends, but the unique way the author imparts the story to you, as well as his writing style, are really something that you have to read for yourself. It also proves how books and movies can differ, eventhough the movie for this book tried to stay as close to the source material as possible, there is just so much that is lost in translation. Turns of phrase, the little details that never make it to the big screen, all manner of things. If you're sick of seeing stories told the same boring way over and over again, give this book a read. It's excellent.
