I know there's already a thread with a similar topic...but this is different, and I thought I would ask...
I have the opposite problem of most women...I have to fight to keep my weight at a "healthy" level. I am currently 5'5" and 130 pounds, but only because I eat almost everything in sight. If I'm not careful, I could drop down to 105. I know, I know, most women think "I wish I had your problem." Being underweight can be just as bad as being overweight. I get tired and lethargic feeling if I lose too much.
So, my question is, are there any natural remedies for this problem? I've only just started trying to find alternatives to Western medicine, and I'm not even sure where to start looking. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't have any serious diseases like diabetes, hyperthyroidism, cancer, parasites, etc that are contributing to weight loss, in which case you'd probably be aware of other problems, then you're healthy, you just have a fast metabolism. I have a friend who eats LOTS of peanut butter to gain weight but I think he's also got a blood-sugar problem so he HAS to eat all the time or he passes out or something. For you, I'd suggest just eating lots of healthy food and if the weight loss is accompanied by any other problems I'd see a doctor. If you're younger, then your metabolism WILL eventually slow down, at least a little. You could try protein shakes or something but I think those are meant for guys who want to build muscle. I also read that sometimes eating a lot of spicy food like hot peppers or mustard can speed up your metabolism. So maybe fewer spicy things would be good. Sorry I'm not much help on this.

Hm. Underweight? sweatdrop I'm afraid I don't know much either, considering I have the opposite problem. (I gain weight when I -smell- cookies baking...) but I'll look around and see what I can find.

Being underweight is a real problem for many people, including one of my best friends, and one of my sons. my son has a condition called "celiac disease" where he cannot tolerate a protien called gluten. unfortunately gluten is found in flour, whole wheat flour, rye flour, barley, barley flour, malt, and anything made with these ingredients. if he ingests ANY gluten he gets sick, tired, & spends a lot of time on the tiolet. it is really hard for him to even gain a pound. A simple blood test will tell you if this is the problem. Other causes could be diseases as mentioned by Nemone, and also stress or trauma. If a medical exam shows no causes I'd say to eat a diet that includes lots of starchy vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes with butter ( not margarine - trans fats ) avacados are great as well as cheeses and nuts ( very high cal) I'd also say to eat only whole grain bread & pastas they absorb more slowly, and pour some olive oil on your salads & pastas. 1 TBSP is 100 calories and no ne of it is bad fat ! It's good for you. to gain / maintain weight your diet should probably contain at least 300 grams of complex carbs & 100 grams of protein a day. Good luck.

I guess I should have said...other than the weight problems, I am completely healthy. No diabetes or food allergies (except tropical fruits like pineapple and kiwi), no cancers...nothing of that sort. This is a problem I've had most of my life.
At what age will my metabolism slow down? I'm 36 now!!! I thought it was around 30 that that started happening? I do try to eat on a regular basis (at least 2 good meals a day and a few snacks), and I never watch what I eat.

I'm 5 feet tall and weigh only 100 lbs. So I'm also at the borderline of being underweight. I make sure not to slip below 100 lbs, but it can be hard sometimes. I usually snack often, and try not too large of meals - since you may not want to snack between larger meals. Of course, healthy snacks are very important, especially in such cases. It's been working fairly well so far.

Nurse_lady some people have a fast metabolism all their life. are you sure you don't have an overactive thyroid gland ? No, I'm not sure I don't have an overactive thyroid gland. Is there a way I can find out without going to a doctor who will write me ten prescriptions just because I walked into their office?

Well, I can give you a list of the other symptoms of hyperthyroidism besides weight loss. I think you'd know if something was wrong if you were dealing with a lot of the stuff from this list.
Symptoms- nervousness, irritability, constantly feeling hot, increased perspiration, insomnia and fatigue, increased frequency of bowel movements, less frequent menstruation and decreased menstrual flow, weakness, hair and weight loss, change in skin thickness, seperation of the nails from the nail bed, hand tremors, intolerance of heat, rapid heartbeat, goiter.

I guess I can safely say that it''s not hyperthyrodism. Weight loss is the only symptom I seem to have. I guess I just have to admit that my metabolism is fast, and eat more to keep my weight up. On a good note -- I bought ice cream this week. Nothing better to help beat the heat than a few ice cream cones!!

mmm... ice cream. I have a friend who eats jars of peanut butter to gain weight. I think it sounds pretty gross but if you were desperate I guess you could do it.

Hey, I'm only 16, but I do have the same condition and it's not due to age. My metabolism is dangerously fast. Here's what I guess you could call a bit of help, it's not really a remedy and it's not so natural, but it's not a pill or anything:
Alchohol tends to slow metabolism over a year or 2. This helps me a lot (Yes, I know, I'm under age). Also, I drink a lot of Coca-cola (Which I know is gonna haunt me later) and that seems to hold me in the same spot. I've only had 12 liters in the last 2 weeks and I'm still in the 125 lb. area, at 5' 9". This probably isn't much help, I just think that knowledge is gained to be shared, so I do.

Alcohol on a regular basis? Bad. Red wine- sometimes good. If he holds true and alcohol can help, maybe a glass of wine with supper would help? And Jimmy? BAD! *scolds* No coke. Aside from being horrible for your body and your health (both short term and long, sugar tends to cause serious metabolic issues)- Pepsi is way better. XD
