Do people only write anime fics now? =/
Oh wait, there's Harry Potter too.. but.. -my- stuff is being neglected and that's just not fair. XD
As a non-fan of Harry Potter and not imbedded enough within the world of anime to write about it I feel that I'm being marginalised, yes I do. O_o;
Any thoughts on the matter? Anyone who -doesn't- write anime fics?
PostPosted: Tue Aug 28, 2007 1:21 pm

Until I joined gaia I didn't realize how many people did write anime fics.
Don't kill me now but I'm just not that into anime. I've only ever watch Sailor Moon, which I loved, but that was a long time ago. I haven't found any other anime that I'm interested in.
I'm not that into Harry Potter either, again don't kill me. I like the whole concept of HP but I'm not a big fan of J.K Rowling's writing. I read up to her forth book and just stopped.
I used to write cartoon fics but they were crap so I delete them all. Now I only write fics based off of tv shows.

XD Maybe Gaia's just screwing my perspective.
I dunno.. I just feel neglected. XP And I'm with you on the J.K. Rowling thing, if she wrote better I wouldn't be so negative about her stuff.

What TV shows do you write about?
PostPosted: Tue Aug 28, 2007 8:22 pm

I do agree with your opinions about J.K. Rowling's writing style, but I did push myself to finish the series.

I write anime-based fictions myself, in the Yugioh fandom, in fact.

I believe the large issue one encounters with anime fanfiction is the fact that it comes in fads. Between 1996 and 2004 Pokemon was THE anime. Sailor Moon was a lessor one between 1998 and 2002 (approximately). Following that was a brief stint for Yugioh, Inuyasha, and ./sign. Now Naruto is the fad. Although I take no interest in any but my own fandom, I will tell you that it does seem rather unfair that whatever fandom you may write in tends to be neglected.

I will now buffer your comments about fad shows. The problem with shows like Naruto and Yugioh is that, unlike Pokemon and Sailor Moon, they became fruitful during the largest registration period of FFN. Your fandom, whatever it may be, is secluded to a certain number of typically dedicated authors who [under all likelyhood] can form a closer-knit community. Fandoms like my own are flooded with poorly written trash and those who are willing to support it.

I would think that, with a smaller community, people would be more apt to support each other and learn in their writing.

Because I write in a fandom now flooded with authors who have not only missed the finer points of my fandom, but also those that ignore the blantant cannon of the series and add terribly written stories, I no longer find myself able to look through the archives. I can honestly I wish myself in a smaller fandom where it wasn't so difficult to find a good read.

Personally I do find the challenge of wading through the trash to find those few gems in my chosen fandom. True, it's becoming increasingly flooded with idiocy, horrible fics not even worth burning, and downright trolls; but I'm loyal to a fault. No matter how desecrated it becomes, I will continue to write for it; hoping that one day the few 'dedicated writers' will come together and make a bid for power.

Although I am a fan of HP - I will never read a fanfic for it.
Anime fanfics are few to find that grab my interest. I like Sailor Moon ones, but then I rarely read them off of moonromance.

I tend to stay in the X-men Evolution and Marvel realm for my fanfiction reads and writes.
I like anime but as I believe was said before, the "fads" tend to make me loose interest - prime example Naruto. I enjoy the manga and the uncut anime is fairly enjoyable- at least until my 8 year old cousin began watching it and then I completely lost interest by him contiunually harping on me about it. (seriously- it just made me not enjoy it.)
Then there is FMA- which I love, but I have read some pretty disgusting summeries that has inssured I'll never read one.

I am picky about my fanfics alltogether so I may not be the best person to ask this question- but I figure since Gaia is largely an Anime community then the Anime writers would have a higher percentage in our population. Plus, unless you read in a certain Fandom you rarely go to other ones beyond your own on FF.Net, where as here- we have a small enough community that those are more noticeable here.

If my reviews are any indication, it's still one heck of an uphill battle.

Back on topic, anime is truly nice, if not a bit embarrassing at how thoroughly the Japanese style of animation and acting trumps just about anything that the American market can produce. But…so many of the ‘fad’ anime are played up while a large number that are extremely good go unnoticed. Personally, I’m a fan of ones like Rozen Maiden, Eyeshield 21, and a few others I can’t thing of at the moment. The ‘popular’ ones are usually infested with stupidity that can rival even the Gaia trolls.

I'm not bashing anime fics.. well, I am sort of, more just bashing bad writing in general really. XD
I do agree the whole fad thing is terrible though, as soon as people start hopping on a bandwagon it pretty soon starts buckling and losing quality. It kind of puts me off getting into things when I know its so popular, unless there is something genuinely good about it, but morons harping after it can quickly put one off something.
I guess I am kinda lucky that my stuff has a smaller and therefore more likely to be dedicated fanbase, and that I also get to avoid the more immature drivel. Thanks Anilates. XD
And kudos to Shiguya for staying loyal, that shows real dedication. ^_^

So what about slashes? It seems like they're a rising fashion as well, and I've seen pairings even in my own areas which really shouldn't be happening. ;-;

It's a sickness, I tell you. It will only continue to grow as long as our society (well, mine at least) continues to push us all into accepting what the laws of nature clearly contradict.

And now cue the heated arguements about prejudice and the like. stare

That's not really a bias opinion, more of a respectable (if not harsh) view on how the 'laws of nature' should dictate both how others live their life and what they choose to write about. If you were looking for a long winded and quite tiresome rant about 'oh, how you're wrong and mean' then I am quite happy to disappoint. 'Slash' as a form of writing is just a deviant from the normal' heatro' pairings that have been a plague to many fandoms for quite some time. The main reason that the ‘slash’ writers are targeted is that the style is a bit more controversial as Rilm pointed out quite zealously. Whether the ‘pairings’ are right or wrong should be left up to a case by case evaluation…though from what I have heard a great deal of them spawn from childish fangirls and fanboys who think certain ‘couples’ are just ‘too cute’ and must be written about. This type of writing, along with its heatro and (dunno what it’s called, but the female equivalent to slash) are all blights upon just about every fandom there is. Now I ask you in return, are you one of the masses who sit by idly while your chosen field of creative writing is polluted by a seemingly endless flood of childish writing and self serving ‘pairing’ fics whose sole purpose is to give some lonely or downright horny teenager that 15 minutes of high? Are you of the many who gripe about it yet contribute to it with your own writing (no matter how well done it is)? If you are, then I suggest you look elsewhere for sympathy or advice; fanfiction.net is being swarmed with atrocious writers, self-indulging children and an increasing number of trolls. It is no longer a haven for fans of a series to express their ideas for canon and non-canon stories, no longer a place to share ideas and views of things that the original creator may not have touched upon. It is a warzone, one that every day as more sues, terrible pairings, tasteless slashes and an overwhelming amount of stupidity batter against the last stronghold of quality fanfic writers. And I ask you, are you one of the few willing to stand up and drive out the cancer that has befallen a once great site?

Oh, and in response to CountEroica, I stick with my chosen fandom not only out of dedication and hope, but also from sheer stubbornness. The day I lie down my pen and let the ‘shippers’, sues and trolls take over MY chosen fandom is the day I no longer draw breath.

Bravo Shiguya. Well said, all of it.

Rilm, there's nothing wrong with disliking slashes. [there's nothing wrong with disliking homosexuality either unless protecting the 'natural laws' brings human kind to tear at each other like mindless dogs preaching on biblical niceties and the evils of the freedom in the modern world. cool ] In many many cases, it is frowned upon mearly for its lack of cannon. I myself have written one shonen-ai (I do hope we all understand the difference between shoenen-ai, yaoi, and slash.) It was more for the sake of experimenting rather than supporting a vicious fan-based terrorism of my fandom.

Although I do in general support free partner choice (be it homo or hetero sexual), I don't necessarily approve of slash. Most of it is just an unbased excuse to have two characters have a heated and often innappropriate romance. Basically, it is about sex (at least from what I've seen).

Still, there is not much left to say thanks to Shiguya's strong and well written views on it, many of which are quite easy to share.

Now if I could only remember how I wrote that...

Bravo in return, a second intelligent response that does not further the heated debate against whether homosexuality (in writing or real life) is right or wrong and kept it on topic. Sadly, I do have to agree with Anilates on the slash point as well. It's about the same level of 'shipping' that I have to wade through, though the turn off factor for reading is different. Cannon is an important point to aim toward maintaining, at least to the point of keeping the characters true to the original authors intentions. Altering their mental entirely just to fulfill some silly fantasy should be a crime, but sadly it is praised all too often.

In short, bringing up such a debate is a very nice thing to see here. I do hope that anyone interested in adding a response can keep the argument for or against 'slash' fics civil, though. After all, it would be a shame for this forum to become another warzone so soon.

XD Applause for Shiguya there. The passion.. the eloquence..

I don't disagree with slashes per se, whether it is a story about straight or homosexual relationships if you're writing a fanfic I believe you should stay true to the characters and putting people that don't belong together is just wrong. Wrong. Dx Especially if it completely goes against the tone the original story was set to. And the slobbering rabid young-teen way it's often written in is just a disgrace to humanity anyway. ^_^ So yeah, basically agreements with Shiguya and Anilates even though you express it better than I could. XP

Haha, and keep up fighting the good fight. *Salutes.* Peace out.

Excuse me while I breathe a sigh of relief. I was afraid that all the rabid yaoi fangirls were going to read my last post and pounce on me.

You have all made brilliant and well presented responses to my, as Shiguya so gently phrased it, 'zealous' comments.

And now allow me to respond: I was seeking neither sympathy nor advice when I wrote that. Selfishly, I must admit that I don't really care whether my stories are liked or not. I write for myself. In truth, there is only one person, other than myself, who's approval I seek. If another happens to find my work, read it, and enjoy themself, so much the better. I would never stain my own conscience by catering to the whims of the ignorant and perverse masses.

While I am uncertain as to what you would suggest be done to halt the spread of this corruption, I should think it quite obvious at this point that I have no intention of ever contributing to it, unless I were to do so without realizing.

I must say how truly wonderful it is to know that there are two as intelligent and refined writers as yourselves on FFN. I only wish I were more knowledgeable in your respective fandoms. I'm sure I would enjoy reading your works.
