I usually get nervous before the start of every new school year, but I'm getting particularly anxious due to the fact that I will begin my career as a junior in a week and two days. Dx

I've heard many negative things about this certain year of high school, mostly concerning the amount of rigorous academic expectations.

So, my fellow females...is this true? Should I be nervous? Have any advice for coping with the excess school work?

    Please share! 4laugh

Well, naturally much the difficulty will depend upon your school and on your courses. You might be taking lots of AP classes, or you may not, but either way, school will probably be more difficult.

In my opinion, Junior year is really daunting because it's when you start your real college searching. You have to do these things-->

1. Keep your grades up.
2. Take your PSAT in November. (Don't bother studying too much, because your scores on this test have no weight on your college admissions.)
3. Keep doing extracurricular activities--especially volunteering. (I suggest using your church and volunteermatch.org to find local volunteer opportunties.) Keep track of your volunteer/service hours and all the other specific details like overseers, organizations, dates, and times, because those are what colleges want. I use a chart in Word, because I have over 200. Also, this website lets you keep track of your service hours for free, and will give you medals after a while.
4. Take your SAT and ACT in May or June, but don't worry if you don't get perfect scores, because you can take them again as early as October in your senior year.
5. Check out collegeboard.com, which is just dripping with great information and also lets you search for and compile your own list of colleges, register for the SAT, and sign up for daily SAT questions (which is nice).

I know, Junior year is really daunting. It scared the heck out of me, but I got through it on a hundred calories a day, and I'm sure you can do even better!

Don't be nervous! I know it's natural but breeaaathe. Take one thing at a time. Don't try to load everything into one day or season or anything. You've made it this far, and you have all the tools you need to do really well!

I have been doing some volunteering with my youth group, so it's good to hear that that will help out. And thanks for those links, they look like they'll be quite helpful.

Thanks for the plethora of great advice! :]

Ah. I'm in the same boat as you, I'm afraid. (It makes me wish I had taken advantage of Freshman year more XO )

I do a lot of extra-curricular things, so I'm hoping that'll help for college. I'm also in Art Honors Society. My volunteer work is lower than what I'd like, so I'll, of course, have to work on that (Literally.). Man, but the academic, I'm hoping, will be alright as long as I stay organized.

Maybe that'll help for you, too? As long as our study material is where it needs to be, preparations for our big tests should go okay.
Best of luck to you~

Wow, Mere M. Your advice helps a lot.

Yup, being organized will definately be helpful.

Good luck to you too. :]

Well, my first day of 11th grade is this Thursday, so I'll report back and see if my anxieties were justified or not.

Junior year can be loads of fun. I love the advice already given... and it's hard for me to think of what to add as my own.

Hmmm, I guess time management is probably key. Use a planner of some sort (my high school always provided us with agendas) to keep track of all your homework, tests and quizes, dates that you need to register for SATs and ACTs, and any fun things you plan on doing.

I remember my first couple months of junior year were pretty bad because I had just started running xc and then had to balance those 2hr practices with my part-time job, homework time, and college planning time.

And Mere mentioned how she ran on a hundred calories a day (I think I managed about 400- a yogurt for lunch and a peanut butter sandwich for dinner)... which reminds me to remind you to eat. Hungry people are irritable, tire easily, and can't focus as well. Hunger can also cause depression, which is really hard to get rid of once you're that low.

So make sure you do take advantage of food. Get up an extra half an hour earlier and eat breakfast. During lunch time at school study AND eat. If you're busy doing stuff after school, make sure you take the time to have dinner.... and keep fresh fruit on hand. Fruit is perfect for munchies while studying... but make sure you cut it before you take it up to your room and eat it with a fork because otherwise it can actually be a distraction (holding fruit in one hand and typing with the other just doesn't work) and messy (sticky fingers on books and keyboards is not cool).

Most of all, try to get into some sort of routine. When things

Just a couple of random things I thought of. Do let us know how you're doing!

Heehee, junior year. Here are the things I wish I'd known, going into that:

-It's not as stressful as it seems from the outside
-Colleges don't care about your grades until this year
-Extracurriculars, especially theater and debate and language clubs, look great and are a lot of fun
-My school had requirements for 10 hours of volunteer work to graduate, as well as CIMs (state tests for Oregon)
-Nobody cares about TAG or, if you're on the East Coast, GT
-AP classes count as college credit
-The workload didn't change a bit
-If you get to know your teachers and let them see how stressed you are, they'll grade less harshly
-Teachers don't eat hearts for breakfast just because you're a junior
And, most of all,
-Really, it's just like sophomore year, but with tests. Which I didn't do until senior year, but whatever.
Hope it helped. I have a paper to write on what a bulls***ter Freud is. surprised

Sooo, it's been about 10 weeks since the beginning of my Junior year, and as it usually turns out, I did overreact a bit. ^^;;

However, there is definately much more homework than in previous years (especially in my AP/Honors classes). I've been neglecting the whole college search thing but I'll start that soon...at least I'm semi-decided on what I'd like to study. :]

Thanks again for all your wonderful advice!

A lot of teachers said that Junoir year is the most important year. To get your grades up if they were bad, impress colleges, get scholarships, etc. >< And they were right. It is the hardest year.
I can't wait til next year when I get to take easy classes! ^^

So...now that we're through half of our Jr. year, how's it working for you? The academics at my school weren't nearly as bad as I heard, but that may just be to the score at teachers I got. At the very least, prom's going to be amazing~*~

Man, I have exams tomorrow. What strange timing is that for this post? Hope things are going well for you! =]
