Ok, so, my mom is getting a horse, which adds our second horse to the family. What will I need to expect when this new horse comes? She's a mare, so she'll be with my other mare too. How do you think my mare will respond to her new compainion? Will Cookie become the Alpha mare? maybe? And other things to get ready for her arrival.

Thanks A Bunch! ^.^

You might wanna have a second stall made and a second pasture to rotate your horses on.

Depending on the temperament of your horse and the new one, nobody knows how they would get along. Seeing as they are mares, they might be chatty and playful, or angry and bitchy. But, if your horse hasn't been with other horses for a while (Say a year or so) they might be lonely, and very welcoming to a new horse. (I know Penny was. xD )

You might wanna prepare a hay net for her, some feed, and give her a few days to relax and get used to her surroundings. She might be nervous, so get her used to everything and take it slow.

You're mare will most likely be the Alpha Mare of the new "herd" but we are not sure. (Penny was rather meek and sad when we put goats in with her, Harmony being the Alpha Goat/Horse and Harmony push Penny around and ate Penny's special feed (I gave Harmony a good whack for that, as it could kill her. It's not meant for her. ) and made Penny sad. So I took the goats out and Penny was a horse again. xD )

Thanks You, ^.^ Yeah, Cookie is very sweet and so is this mare, and Cookie's been alone for about 5 months, but never showed any signs of lonelyness. The pasture is big enough for 2 or so horses, but if they don't get along we might need to divide it up, the other pasture we're making is an all-grass pasture for rotation.

Thanks Again ^.^

since your horse is alone, the more dominant mare will become thealpha mare. It will have nothing to do with the fact that this place is already the other mares home. You'll probably notice right from the start one chasing the other around, and it's just to let the other know who's boss. If you can, it's best to set up a paddock or small pen next to the area your original mare is. Make sure it's big enough so that if your mare tries to bite over the fence, the other mare can get out of reach. It's good to keep them apart a day or 2 so they can sniff it out. This prevents the chance of one of them getting injured. When you put them out together, make sure it's in a large area without weird corners so a horse can't get "trapped" if the other chases it over there and starts kicking. Make sure you put their feed piles far apart (especially for the first while until you know how they tolerate each other) and make 3 or 4 piles that are well spaced (even if this means putting hay out on the ground instead of in a feeder). It's important to watch them and see how they react to each other. Some horses are instant buddies (tendoncy to happen more with geldings), but some horses never really care for each other, even if theyre the only 2 for miles.

Where Cookie came from she was the lowest horse in her herd and so is this mare. And they both had run-ins.

Thanks For The Info! 6.^
