This thread is about X Japan ^^

X Japan, or X which was their initial name, was a Japanese Visual-Kei band, the brainchild of Yoshiki (Hayashi Yoshiki). Their sound started as japanese rock speed metal, and later went toward alternative rock, but always with a huge emphasis in ballads.

Biography
Plans for the band started in 1976, when its original members, Toshi (Deyama Toshimitsu) and YOSHIKI, were only 11. The band's first name was NOISE, later on changing to X in 1983.

X Japan had very punkish looks in the eightiesBetween 1976 and 1987, many people entered and left X, but its most famous formation was already in place when the band went major in 1987, with the release of their first single オルガスム ("Orgasm"). The members at that time were: Yoshiki on drums and piano, Toshi on vocals, hide (Matsumoto Hideto) (always spelled with a lowercase h), Pata (Ishizuka Tomoaki) on guitar and Taiji (Sawada Taiji) on bass. No record labels would sign the band because of their transgressive way of dressing and performing. Not to be stopped, Yoshiki created his own record label, Extasy Records, with money he and his mother helped provide by selling the family business.

In 1992, X was widely known in Japan, and they intended to start focusing in America. In US there was already a band called X, so they were forced to change their name to X Japan. A little before changing the name one of the many arguments that used to take place between Yoshiki and Taiji led to Taiji's departure of the band. Taiji's last three live performances were three sold-out gigs in Tokyo Dome 5.-7.1.1992. He was replaced by Heath (Morie Hiroshi) later in that same year.

After leaving, Taiji worked with Loudness, D.T.R., and Cloud 9 for a while, and is now in another band with his little sister on vocals, Otokaze. They performed at hide's birthday celebration on 2003.12.13, and Taiji covered hide's "ROCKET DIVE" as well.

X's music, under the caring but determined supervision of Yoshiki, never stopped evolving. Amongst their music one can find songs for everybody: harsh but very emotive speed metal tracks like "Sadistic Desire," "Phantom of Guilt" and "Vanishing Love;" even more acclaimed ones like "Kurenai" and "Silent Jealousy;" moving piano ballads like "Forever Love" (the ending theme for the anime film X) and "Tears;" and alternative yet powerful tracks like "DAHLIA" and "Rusty Nail." One particularly notable song was "ART OF LIFE," a carefully crafted piece that was almost half an hour (28:56) long and that the band played twice, both during their "X JAPAN RETURNS" shows in 1993.12.30~31.

Almost all X Japan tracks were composed by Yoshiki with a handful of pieces composed by hide and even some early ones by Taiji. Yoshiki loved classical music, and this influence can be specially noted in tracks like "ROSE OF PAIN", "ART OF LIFE" or his symphonic composition "Amethyst." He led a project called Eternal Melody which consisted in X's songs rearranged by George Martin and other arrangers for classical performance. The double album, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, was released in 1993. YOSHIKI also selected some classical pieces for two compilations called YOSHIKI Selection and YOSHIKI Selection II. He also remade the song "Black Diamond" by KISS into a classical piece that listed in 1994's Kiss My a** album, a tribute to the aforementioned band.

In May 1997, Toshi, shocking the fans, announced he was leaving the band, which led to its dissolution in 22nd September 1997. Toshi then joined a kind of cult, related to nature and music therapy, lead by a man called Masaya. Many say that this cult influenced Toshi's departure of the band. After that, he continued his solo career, saying that his friend Masaya was a inspiration for his new compositions. Toshi himself alleged he was becoming frustrated by the excessive work demanded by the band, and couldn't do what he wanted to do; so to avoid disappointing the other members and the fans, he decided to leave. He has also said that he hadn't enough time for his family and he just couldn't sing anymore Yoshiki's sad and touching songs.

X Japan's very last live concert on December 31, 1997 at Tokyo Dome. After the dissolution of the band, hide continued his very successful solo career with his band hide with Spread Beaver, Pata performing with him sometimes.

Posterior to these events, it is said that Yoshiki and hide were secretly planning to resurrect X in 2000, sans Toshi, looking for a substitute singer. In the very last case hide would be both, the singer and the guitarist. These plans were tragically scrapped when hide died on May 2, 1998. He was found in his apartment early on May 2, 1998 after a typical night out of hard drinking. He was found hung to a doorknob by a towel at 7:30 am. hide died on the road to the hospital. This news stunned Japan's youth: four fans around the country attempted suicide, two of whom died. A lot of speculation about his death has taken place, but no definitive explanation has been found. An apparent suicide, it's thought to be an accidental death, but there is not a clear motive for either suicide or murder. Following hide's death, Yoshiki entered in a depressive state for almost three years, being unable to compose or play.

In late 2000, Yoshiki recovered, and announced the creation of his new project, Violet UK, a project involving music, visuals, mode and art. In 2002 he produced and starred in three commercials for 7-11, using some Violet UK music and concepts for those. However, up to date, not much else from Violet UK has been shown or released. In 2002 also, Yoshiki announced he was joining the J-Pop band globe, to help his long time friend Komuro Tetsuya (in 1991 Yoshiki, on drums, and Komuro, on keyboards and vocals, did a musical collaboration under the name of V2, releasing a single and performing one live concert). Currently Yoshiki is working with his new project, S.K.I.N., with famous Japanese musicians Gackt, Sugizo, Miyavi and Ju-Ken.

As a side note, Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichirou has said that he is a big fan of X Japan and that his favorite song is Forever Love, which helped create his image as a different type of politician more in touch with average Japanese citizens.

News has been posted both at Yoshiki's official blog as well as at Toshi's website that plans are underway to re-form the band.

Yoshiki

User Image

Name : Hayashi Yoshiki
Birth Date : November 20, 1965 (Scorpio)
Birth Place : Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, Japan

Biography
It all started when Yoshiki's mother, a classical piano teacher, began giving him lessons at the age of five. From then on, he always showed a great affinity for music. When he discovered at the age of ten that his father had comitted suicide, his love for music was what carried him through the tragedy. A big fan of KISS among other American bands, Yoshiki learned to focus his anger and pain through drumming.

In 1976, Yoshiki and his childhood friend Deyama Toshimitsu formed a rock speed metal band called NOISE. In 1982, at the end of their high school days, Yoshiki and Toshi tried to turn NOISE into a professional band. Renamed X, the band became notorious because of their punkish looks and their music was too angry and aggressive for a recording label to risk licensing. However, believing in her son's potential, Yoshiki's mother sold their family business so that Yoshiki could found Extasy Records and produce X's music himself.

Many members entered and left X, but their members finally standardized in 1987. Yoshiki was the drummer and pianist as well as the composer, hide was the lead gutarist and secondary composer, Toshi was the vocalist, Pata was the second guitarist, and Taiji was the bassist. That same year, X relased their first single オルガスム (Orgasm). By 1988, Extasy Records also met with success, having signed two other bands (LADIES ROOM and ZI:KILL).

When Yoshiki's good friend Komuro Tetsuya (of GLOBE) came to him in 1991, they decided to release a single called Haitoku no Hitomi - Eyes of Venus under the name V2. Yoshiki, as always, was the drummer and pianist, while Komuro was the keyboardist. Together, they also held a concert. Additionally, Yoshiki released Yoshiki Selection, a CD selection of Yoshiki's favorite classical music.

By 1992, X was widely known and extremely popular in Japan. Yoshiki became such a rabid drummer that he frequently had neck and wrist injuries as well as black-outs while performing. During some concerts, he wore neck braces and ignored advice from his doctor to stop drumming because it was too hard on his wrists.

Meanwhile, X's punkish look had given birth to a look known now as Visual-Kei, which became a major influence on the Japanese rock scene. It was so popular that Fools Mate published a photobook (appropriately named NUDE) of Yoshiki modeling. Though Yoshiki shed his effeminate clothing, the knee-length hair and the mekeup still expressed the Visual-Kei look. That same year, Extasy Records signed rock legend LUNA SEA.

With X's increasing popularity, they decided to focus on an American audience as well. Unfortunatly, there was already an American band called "X", so Yoshiki's band was forced to change their name to X Japan, which thankfully stuck. Their performance on the American scene is unknown, but it halted the same year when Taiji decided to leave the band. He was later replaced by bassist Heath.

By 1993, X Japan's immense popularity combined with their release of the nearly-thirty-minute opus, Art of Life, gave them a much needed break, and time to focus on solo work. This gave Yoshiki the chance to return once again to the classical music scene. He teamed up with George Martin, Graham Preskett, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra to release a full-length two-CD album, Eternal Melody. The album contained orchestral arrangements of several X Japan songs and one of Yoshiki's own. That song, Amethyst, was also recorded by Yoshiki and Martin and released as a single the same year.

In 1994, Yoshiki continued his own work, teaming up this time with Roger Taylor to produce a single called Foreign Sand. As usual, Yoshiki was the pianist and drummer. Taylor was the vocalist. That same year, Yoshiki was finally able to give back to his favorite band. He arranged a classical version of one of KISS's songs, Black Diamond, for their tribute CD, KISS My a**.

In 1996, Yoshiki released Yoshiki Selection II, the sequel to his previous classical music compilation. Meanwhile, Extasy Records had signed many other bands, including GLAY and Tokyo Yankees, and would continue strong, eventually signing Abandoned Pools and Dir en grey.

X Japan returned from their break in 1996 with the November release of Dahlia, but tragedy struck again. Behind the scenes, Toshi had left the band. There would be no tour. It was announced nearly a year later in May, and the band formally dissolved that September.

Once X Japan disbanded, Yoshiki began working on a new solo project, Violet UK. He aimed for it to combine a variety of musical genres and other elements like fashion in the same way that all colors combine to form violet. Behind the scenes, he was planning to resurrect X Japan with hide in 2000. However, those plans would soon be shattered forever.

On May 2, 1998, hide was found hanging by a towel from a doorknob. The suicide shocked Yoshiki to the point where we became unable to compose music and vowed to give up drumming forever. A memorial concert for hide was planned in 2002, but it was cancelled due to the fear that it was too commercial of an idea.

In 1999, a tribute CD was released for hide called hide TRIBUTE SPIRITS, That November, Yoshiki was also asked to perform in a festival to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the enthronement of Emperor Akihito. Yoshiki peformed Anniversary, an original orchestral piece. He performed on the piano while backed by an orchestra. It was well received by both the Emperor and his wife, Empress Michiko, who both adore Yoshiki's music. The successful composition of both these songs led Yoshiki to break out of his slump completely by 2000.

Interestingly enough, during his 2001 campaign for Prime Minister of Japan, Koizumi Junichirou made it publicly known that his favorite song was X Japan's own Forever Love.

After the announcement of Violet UK, Yoshiki began to promote it. In 2002, he produced and starred in three comercials for 7-11, in which Violet UK music and concepts were used. That year, Yoshiki also announced that he was once again joining Komuro Tetsuya, this time as the fourth member and keyboardist of the J-Pop band GLOBE. However, to keep Violet UK off the backburner, Yoshiki held a two-day December concert with the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra. Though the concert featured Yoshiki's Violet UK music, it also included some popular X Japan ballads and some of his own solo songs. The concert was released on DVD near the end of 2003.

Yoshiki is producing DAHLIA, who was chosen to sing the theme of Aichi's Expo 2005. He is also currently producing The TRAX, a Korean rock band, whose single, Scorpio, was recently released in December, 2004.

In March 2005, fans were elated to hear that Yoshiki had released Eternal Melody II, a followup of the first album, except with the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra. This album cosisted of mainly Yoshiki's own work, Violet UK and otherwise. However, unable to allow it to be completely devoid of X Japan's influence, the CD also contained a beautifully-written arrangement of arguably X Japan's most popular ballad, Forever Love.

Yoshiki is now part of "supergroup" S.K.I.N., which consists of himself, popular solo artists Gackt and Miyavi, SUGIZO, former gutarist of LUNA SEA, and JU-KEN from GacktJOB. SKIN played their first live at Anime Expo on 29th July, 2007.

Profile
Full Name: Matsumoto Hideto
Nickname: hide [always spelled with lower case 'h'] (pronounced hee-deh, not to be confused with L'Arc~en~Ciel's HYDE)
Birth Date: December 13, 1964
Birthplace: Midorigaoka, Yokosuka, Japan
Death Date: May 2, 1998
Blood Type: AB
Horoscope: Sagittarius
Height: 170 cm
Weight: Around 50kg
Bands: Yokosuka SAVER TIGER, X / X Japan, hide with Spread Beaver, MxAxSxS and Zilch.

Life

Matsumoto Hideto, known as 'hide', was born in Midorigaoka, Yokosuka on December 13, 1964. Slightly overweight as a child, Hideto was known as the shy bookworm who had trouble interacting with other children. But everything changed when he was 15 years old, at a friend's house, and heard Alice by Kiss.

Kiss' commanding sound and wild visual aesthetics enthralled him, and later that same year, his grandmother bought him a Gibson guitar, a gift that would forever change hide's life.

In 1981, hide formed the independent rock band Saver Tiger, where he served as both lead guitarist and songwriter. But hide's talent couldn't stay hidden for long, and not long after, he was discovered by a man named Hayashi Yoshiki, and in 1987, hide joined Yoshiki's band X Japan, then called simply X. He became the lead guitarist and secondary composer, while Yoshiki was the main composer and drummer.

X's sound was nothing like anything currently existing in the Japanese music scene. Their wild costumes, sky-high hairdoes and in-your-face sound quickly attracted crowds, and they became the first band in history to completely sell out the Tokyo Arena-- not once, but three consecutive nights. But after ten years together as a band, lead singer Toshi announced his official departure from X, and the band dissolved.

Hide set off on what would become a remarkably successful solo career. He recorded his first album, Hide Your Face in 1994, and played all guitars (including bass guitar) and performed all vocals. Two years later, he recorded the album Psyence, which is regarded as hide's best album due to its remarkable versatility, and thus began the Psyence a Go Go tour.

Later, hide created a band which would become known as "hide with Spread Beaver," and he served as guitar player and vocalist for them as well. They began recording their first album, Ja, Zoo, but midway through production, a tragedy struck.

Death
On May 2, 1998, after a night of drinking and partying with his girlfriend, hide returned to his apartment around 6:30 in the morning. An hour later, at 7:30, hide's girlfriend returned to the apartment and found hide suspended from his bathroom doorknob by a towel tied around his neck. hide died en route to the hospital.

hide's death shocked the nation of Japan. Hundreds of fans came to his funeral; so many, in fact, that the line stretched more than a mile down the streets of downtown Tokyo, and the city essentially ground to a halt. By the end of the day, twenty-six fans had been hospitalized due to excessive screaming, crying, or injury in the crowd. In the days following hide's death, three young girls died in copycat suicides, and many more tried, but failed.

hide's death has been the source of much speculation. Some believe that it was an accident, as a result of a botched attempt at autoerotic asphyxiation or some other means, while some believe that it was a suicide. hide was, by his own admission, an alcoholic, and after X Japan's disbandment, his drinking became even more pronounced. Though there was no note to indicate suicide, some believe that his song "Pink Spider" was in fact his suicide note, as the song speaks of a 'spider' who wishes for wings so he can 'be free.'

Former X Japan drummer Yoshiki sent this message out to his fans following the death: "Everyone, please watch over his eternal sleep warmly."

I have SO much respect for Yoshiki, he is a true fan of music, and a very nice person to boot, he brought hot coco and coffee to people waiting in line at Jrock Revolution, and then later that week brought those heat packs that you use when hunting, he's a freaking awsome guy!
