Okay. Sorry if this belongs in the harmony flute forum.
This is my 4th year playing flute and my band director decided that I'm going to start piccolo. IS HARD!!!!!!!!!!
So I'm having trouble. I played pic for the first time yesterday and I'm having some issues. Does anybody have any tips on switching from flute to piccolo?
I just can't get my tone to sound not horrible. Thanks!
It's so tiny! Heh. I keep missing the keys...

Just think about tightening your airflow. Imagine your embouchure when you are playing super high flute notes, and try to keep it like that.

make sure your air is focused. If its not, it'll make squeaky sounds. Practice a lot. If you have a flute teacher, have them listen to you play so they can give you tips on how to play better. You hold it up on your lip more than you would hold a regular flute (but I don't know where you put YOUR mouthpeice when YOU play so I can't help you all that much. Make sure to support your air. Keep trying to play. Hopefully your fingers aren't too big if you keep missing the keys. When you play flute, you should keep your fingers close to the keys so that way when you play fast passages, you can finger the notes faster. I wish I had you in front of me so I could help you more but this is probably the best advice I can give for now over the internet.

Also , make sure your embouchure is REALLY firm. and another thing. try not to lose your flute embouchure while your at your wits end with your piccolo xd . long tones should help.. A LOT biggrin

you dont want a really tight embochure because your tone will be bad... you want to make the hole that the air comes out of smaller... like you are blowing air through one of those really tiny coffee stirrer straws.... if you are tightening up a lot, you are most likely making the wrong embochure... you dont want a "smileing embochure" you want a sort of dead-pan face and just adjust the size of the hole that your air comes out of rather than pulling back with the corners of your mouth... you will pucker a little bit rather than pull back

Firstly, you gotta remember that the embouchure hole is MUCH smaller than your flute's. (That's basically what people have been saying, but I'm trying to go lamemens on you.) While you have to concentrate your airstream more, DON'T pucker your lips or bring them closer together. Instead keep the opening of your lips tall and close the sides more than you would on your flute. It might also help you to remember that the notes are an octave higher than you are used to, so when you play the music in your head before you play, mentally hear it up an octave. Be careful not to overshoot low and middle octaves, either (I did that when I first started playing).
In any case, just relax. You'll do fine. If you mess up, that's do be expected, but don't get tenser because of it. It's probably just a case of needing to grow accustomed to the instrument.
