False Memory Syndrome.

And if you don't really know what it means, it's basically a foundation that says that most every child claiming sexual abuse in adulthood is lying. They figure that they have no way to know if someone is really guilty. On the off side, though, you're giving a known ***** or rapist a chance to get out of being found guilty. It is simply a way to protect the guilty. Regular rules still apply, however. So trash away!

I'll add tomorrow the ways in which we can counteract these threats to credibility.

Exactly so. And for people who were abused when they were young (like me, who was 4-5), it's even worse. We're accused of telling stories and being brain-washed by therapists.

Actually, it is more for those who's memories of certain traumatic events have been forgotten and years later return. But due to inconsistencies of their story the memory is deemed to be false. Or also for those who's memory has been reconstructed from a series of fragmented memories without careful approach as to where and when the fragements may have actualy taken place.

If it is a memory that you continue to have that hasn't been altered and have proof occured, then it will not be considered a false memory.

But it should not be used as defence against an abuse survivor.
