As an aside, it's Reform Judaism (in the process of reforming their theology and practice) rather than Reformed Judaism (past tense).

Depends what you mean by the word. A few possible questions you might be asking:

Are you a fastidious house cleaner? -- Yes

Are you scrupulous with personal hygiene? -- Yes

Do you have a meticulous nature in general? -- Yes

Do you keep impeccable financial records so that you can make accurate tax calculations? -- Yes

Do you personally keep the mitzvot (commandments) as well as you possibly can? -- Yes

Do you think everyone else in the whole world ought to keep the mitzvot as well as you do, or better? -- No. Only the people who claim to be Orthodox. I'm Orthodox but not very well educated yet in full observance. Therefore, if someone else calls themselves Orthodox, I figure they ought to be at least as good at it as I am, or better. "Orthodox" generally means "observing the laws." If you're not observing the laws, or at least trying your best to do so, then you're not Orthodox. If you claim to be Orthodox, then you ought to be at least making an effort, or else you're lying to yourself. If you don't claim to be Orthodox, then whether you keep the mitzvot is really neither here nor there. It's like claiming to be a vegetarian. If you don't claim to be a vegetarian, eat whatever you want, and it's not my business. If you claim to be a vegetarian, and I see you eating a hamburger or a big huge helping of sausage, then I know you're not what you claim to be. I also know that I probably can't eat over at your place, because if you're lying about what you're eating, then you're probably going to lie about what you're feeding me (and whether or not it's kosher).

Remember... no religion bashing! But, having said that, do you guys consider Messianic Jewdaism to be a branch of Jewdaism, Christianity, or both? Because that's what I am.

If you believe the messiah has come, and that it was (or is) Jesus, then that's a branch of Christianity. It has a few things about it that remind Jews of a familiar flavor, though. Hebrew language, for example, and a lot of references to Jewish prayer forms.

Being Hanukkah time and being again bombarded with Christmassy things here on Gaia, I decided to check out how the other guilds were handling things. I also decided that all of gaia needed a little education. I own/co-own numerous guilds and it was suggested, and I picked up on the offer to counter the Father Christmas idea with a whimsical Mama Hanukkah theme.

So.. here I am... I have been on chatterbox with several people of differing faiths, and all seemed to like the idea of a fresh approach.

oh... and just in case you would like to see me and read the whimsy:

Sounds like an interesting idea, and I nominate your current outfit as a good look for Mama Chanukah. smile I kind of wish, sometimes, that Judaism had imaginary beings, similar to Santa Claus/Father Noel, that we could point to as childhood heroes. Then again, I realize that we've got an awful lot of real live heroes to look to, and they don't depend on magical powers or fantasy settings to give them relevance and add excitement to their legends. But once in a while, Mama Chanukah, Hanukka Harry, or my best (non-Jewish) friend's idea of a Chanukah Fairy... they start to sound a bit appealing, I'll admit.

Hang on I gotta work on your grammar a minute.

"How did Judaism come about, and what's the significance of David and Goliath?"

Is that the question?

Shalom. I'm not a member so I shouldn't post, but I just want to say this looks like a great guild.
