I tend to go for the foreign/indie/out-there films, many of which are GLBT-themed.
In particular, I am completely enamoured with:
- Plata quemada (English title: Burnt Money) - based on a true-crime novel with a slightly different focus and feel; it's the story of a band of criminals who escape to Argentina with a load of cash, but ultimately are defeated in a spectacular showdown. Two of the main characters (whom the movie is centred around) are together, but endure some hard times and are ultimately reconciled. Eduardo Noriega in particular is brilliant. Full of angst and gunfire!
- Lilies - Canadian film unlike anything I've ever seen. It's a story within a story with insanely gorgeous visuals. In essence, a group of prisoners put on a play for a visiting priest to expose his guilt in the murder of a prisoner's childhood love. It's an all-male cast playing both female and male roles, but perhaps the most enjoyable aspect is the ease with which the film transitions from the cement-floored cell of their 'church' to the dazzling settings of the actual story. Angst-ridden and heart-breaking - just the way I like it!
- My Beautiful Laundrette - oh, how I love this one. Silly and serious, always at the right time. This is the story of a (I think) Palestinian boy who takes charge of his uncle's laundromat, and enlists the help of an old friend to help him. The only problem is, (1) the friend is a member of a racist all-white gang and (2) they quickly develop feelings for each other. Watch for the bubbling washing machine music theme!
more to come as I go back through my massive collection...
