A couple of my friends here once told me that they'd travel to the states to visit friends and were told they had a Canadian Accent.
Do we actually have an accent..and if so..what does it sound like?

There is no one "Canadian Accent", but as with any country there are a multitude of different accents across the nation. Though the most common accent would be pretty much like the most common American accent. But again, depends om where you're from.
"Do we actually have an accent"
Anyone who speaks any language has an accent.

everyone has some type of accent.. and i guess each part of the provinces has its own to.. cause my mom has called into this show for whatever and the guy ( not the host just a phone answering person) actually figured out where we lived by her "accent" because he grew up in the same area so he could tell it was different from vancouver where she had to call to.

Are you from a rural area? As I find that Canadians living in major urban centres (excluding St. John's and those in Quebec) all speak with pretty much the same accent (which is virtually identical to most Americans, west coasters especially), whereas different rural regions will be home to their own accent.

Let's not be modest. Everybody has accents. There are New York accents and southern accents in the states, it's not that unlikely for us to have ones too. Newfoundland for example? Almost a dead giveaway, lots of east coasters and many that live in rural areas especially in Alberta have accents.

Whatever language you speak, you speak with a certain accent, even if there is only one. However, with accents like the NY one or southern US one, it is not spoken by everyone, and many (most in the NY example) - especially young people - speak with a more "standard" North American accent. In general, accents are just becoming more homogenized. pxxn because in highschool and elementary 90% of the students came from italian families Woodbridge?

I remember my grandparents went to go visit my second cousin in Kansas & it just so happens I was chatting with her that night. She was laughing & said that she loved their cute canadian accents. Tehn I told her, "Coming for a Kansas girl!" Then we laughed & aruged about who had more of an accent. I still think she does. xd

"Do we actually have an accent" Anyone who speaks any language has an accent. I can only agree with you on that. I think I can count like, at least 10 different french accents in new-Brunswick eek Just by hearing someone, I can say if he's from Shippagan, Neguac, Caraquet, Miramichi, Edmunston, Moncton, Bathurst, Campbellton, etc. But the "chiac" accent is the most entertaining. Around Shediac and Moncton, people there have their own accent and I can't get rid of hearing them 4laugh But I think people from somewhere else judges our accent on our way to say things. We probably don't have the same expression as someone from UK or New-Zealand, per example, and certainly not the same way to say some things, even if that's the same language.

There's no real Canadian accent. If anything, we sound 'normal' for the most part. It's just some of the Americans with the accent, like the ones from the west I think. xp
Like MonkeyRonin said, there are many different accents across our nation. Like chinese, in downtown Toronto (Scarborough).

The Americans think we do.
According to American filmakers, YES, we Canadians DO have a very distinct and annoying accent. biggrin
They have declined actors jobs because they 'sound too Canadian' and put them in workshops to make them 'sound American'. Apperently all of us pronounce 'dollar' as "daller". And the word 'vehicle' is actually pronounced 'vee-hickle' (with a hyphen, lol)
I think they've got cotton in their ears. EVERYONE has an accent. I've been told mine sounds Scottish. 3nodding Which makes sense, considering my family is Scottish on one side.
And I'm not making this up. It was on CTV news XD
