I wanted a spot where people could pose questions about problems they have and see if someone has an answer. Also here you can talk about your motors and the work done to your vehicles. A forum for mechanics. Enjoy!

Well, I'm Geoff, and I drive an Alfa. Got it about two days ago. And it needs plenty of work. Yesterday brought it home, my friend sorted out the ignition timing, fixed the boot lid catch and I fiddled with the fuel cap door, and we replaced the door skirting. There's still plenty where that came from. I'll keep you all updated. smile

It includes everyone who works on cars or has had work done on their cars by others. Basically it is for anybody!

My dad was a grease monkey for a LONG time, but now he's just a collision repair specialist, so I'm learning from him. I have 3 years to learn how to do something useful. =P

Awesome! When I get my ASE certification and the bank for a garage, I'm going to start a shop with a body shop, tires, and engine. A one stop shop you could say. But to the point...I live in Texas, but I'm not sure where I want to settle. I am going to need a body guy. I know you are still young, but I can keep you in mind if you would like.

Sure, and I live in Missouri. He's starting to teach me basic welding and such on his lunch breaks. He's already got his iCar platinum certificate, so he can't get anything else.

Awesome! I'm fairly close. I've been to parts of MIssori. It was some good views. It'll take a few years to get through the course and a few more to get the funds. Hopefully I'll get a job with BMW. Damn good pay with them.

SUCCESS!
This problem was almost laughing me in the face for 3 weeks, but FINALLY I successfully fixed it. My check engine light came on, and when I diagnosed it myself, I narrowed it down to the knock sensor or the wiring. I talked with other mechanics but all they did is just gave me mixed messages. There were some saying it was the wiring, some saying it was the sensor, but ALL were saying to "bring the car in."
I finally went on a whim and replaced the sensor. The light turned off and the car drove beautifully. I probably saved myself $150-250 just by doing that.
...(sigh)...I hate it when mechanics give mixed messages and that would rather shake you by the ankles for money rather than taking five minutes to help you. No offense, but that's how I feel.

well they are just out there to make money, as soon as you sshow up it's at least 200 more in their pockets..... like the time we had to replace the rear brake calipers on a ford five hundred.... we called around, and got the same reply, finally I took them both apart bought new aftermarket pads and calipers.... my dad had a friend who owed him a favor, so i was able to get a special tool for reinstalling the calipers, and alining them....
it's my job to cheat the system, and work on my own... everything included, was less that half the price we would have had to pay

Zack Nakazora well they are just out there to make money, as soon as you sshow up it's at least 200 more in their pockets..... like the time we had to replace the rear brake calipers on a ford five hundred.... we called around, and got the same reply, finally I took them both apart bought new aftermarket pads and calipers.... my dad had a friend who owed him a favor, so i was able to get a special tool for reinstalling the calipers, and alining them.... it's my job to cheat the system, and work on my own... everything included, was less that half the price we would have had to pay Its all the labor that goes in. I had to explain this to my gran when she asked why a job that took the mechanic 15 minutes to do still had her at a $20 labor. I told her it all has to do with the books. If the book says its an hour long job and it takes the mechanic 15 minutes, then you get charged for the hour.

frankly it's a bunch of bull
my dad was trying to get me to not engine swap a protege he pointed to the cost of a replacement for his Ford 500 it would cost me 12,000 total for the tranny and the engine, but this was according to the ford place
the mazda engine JDM costs 200 and the aftermarket tranny costs 1,100 shipping is 200 and all the instalation is me...

Normally I like to work on my 911 myself but there is one mechanic I trust to help me when I need the job done with 100% precision. We're old friends (but he's alot older than me) from when he worked restoring VW Beetles for my dad. He knows the beetle engine like the back of his hand so naturally my 911 flat-6 is a breeze. I really only take 911 in for serious issues like a ruptured timing chain D:
