I really can't find one.
Defensive buildings - Can't move, vulnerable to long-range and Disruption Web, sometimes limited to either ground or air, but can't be hurt by Psionic Storm.
Zerglings or Dark Templar - Can hide, but can't hit air and Zerglings are EXTREMELY vulnerable to Psionic Storm. Also, blurry patches on the ground are fairly obvious.
Regular ground units (marines, dragoons, etc.) - Usually expensive or weak, but more moveable during different situations.
Seige Tanks - What I use. Longest range in the game, one of the highest damages, has splash. Also the only unit with a minimum range, and the only one (other than a nuke or infested terran) that can hurt your own units. Takes a long time during a rushed situation to repack and lose min. range. Has a rather lengthly reload time. I usually pile up 6 right on top of one another at the entrance of my base. Unfortunately, can't hit air, but if they're attacking with air, they're attacking with a lot of carriers and I'm screwed anyway xd

The perfect defense can only be mounted if you know exactly what your opponent is throwing at you and where.
Personally, a mixture of cannons/high templar in my bases and expansions works for me. For extra defense, I use my army. It's very rarely a good idea to invest all of your resources into building a defense, because then you'll never be on the attack.

My brother spends all his time in the beginning making an extreme defense and calls me cheap if I rush him or bring in tanks. Any suggestions?

Keep rushing him until he gives up turtling and does something else.

My younger sister blocks off all her exits with bunkers and turrets and Goliaths. -._-.
For protoss, I use grouped cannons, dragoons and reavers (though you'll have to keep refilling them) and sometimes Carriers.
I can't say there's anything completely flawless though. But try to use variety. Though that's mostly said for offence, it counts for defence too.

If you're really annoyed expand like crazy. Defence is just that. Defencee. He won't attack you and he's just sitting there. You expand like nuts get heck of a lot of resources and you'll just outmass him/her.

Going defensive first is bad or, you could always defense and then work your forces up then attack them while they're attacking you.

Lol I've been in that situation before: you're fighting someone and you both send attacks to the other's base, except the armies don't meet en route and then you're both struggling to destroy the other's buildings before your they finish yours off.
I was a Pylon away from victory . xd
