How many calories a day should you eat on a diet? Because right now im on a 1000 calorie diet, is that good or not enough?

That is low, but that also depends on how much physical activity you are doing. If you are doing a lot, that is no where near enough. If you aren't doing any, it's still low, but it won't be as bad for your body.

The recommended I think is around 1200-1800 depending on your weight, height and amount of physical activity you do every day. Also to go more technical, it will also depend on your body's ratio of muscle and fat (more muscle requires more energy)

I have to agree with KaseyBaby on the calorie count concerns, and not surprisingly this is one of those sorts of diet questions that are best directed at physicians, and especially dietitians. As a matter of fact, if you haven't done so yet, make an appointment with a dietitian and get yourself better educated on the subject as it applies to you and your diet.

Best of luck to ya on your diet and I hope that you also include exercise in your weight loss goals.

All those nutritional food label things are based on a 2000 calorie diet. So, I'd assume that's what the government scientist dudes think is what the average person should be getting. I don't realy count calories. I have no clue how much I get each day. confused

Calorie counting is great, but you need to know how many calories you should be taking in a day before you start. The best way I've found to do this is by using the Harris-Benedict formula. I've found that using a one size fits all diet isn't good, because no everyone can go on 1000cal, or 1500cal, or whatever the diet asks you. So once you've got your formula worked out, its merely a matter of reducing your calories by 10 percent every 2 weeks for 4 weeks, so you slowly progress down to eating 20% less than your body actually needs which makes it work a little harder and burns more o the bad stuff.

food for thought wink

I agree- 1200 calories a day is really the minimum. As an added incentive, remember that if you eat too little, your metabolism will slow down so you can't eat more without gaining weight, as I found out the hard way after living on basically an 850 calorie diet for two months. It just doesn't work.

I heard that it should be at least 1,500 calories per day or else your body goes into starvation mode and your body wants to hold onto fat thus slowing down your progress gonk Read about this in a bunch of places, if you're interested in how many calories your body needs and BMI I have a few sites I bookmarked that has the formula for this surprised
