Assuming that not everyone here knows what a vasectomy is, it is an elective procedure taken by some men to sterilize themselves, preventing themselves from fathering children through the physical act of mating.

Anyway, the interesting bit here is that this morning, on the radio, three hosts were talking about vasectomy before they had their 'Open Phones' session. Open Phones is when listeners can call in and either chime in on their topic or talk about something else completely unrelated.

One of the first callers talks about vasectomies not involving a scalpel and how he had a motorcycle accident where his testes had to be removed (either they were removed during the accident, or after during surgery, I'm not sure).

After a few calls another one tells them that his stepfather was a urologist and how he had the procedure done. He goes on to say that his stepfather was part of an 'elite group' of surgeons who did the procedure themselves.

At first the hosts thought that each member of the group would perform the operation for another member, or something like that.

No, the listener says...

...

He says his stepfather did the procedure HIMSELF on HIMSELF. With a mirror and everything neutral He said he didn't trust someone else to do it, and that this 'elite' group apparently did the same thing.

That's just...wow.

It's entirely possible the listener was BSing everyone, though.

Actually that is quite real. There are surgeons that do operations on themselves, only when there is no one close to do the surgery. Also applies to the staff being under trained for it.

Like I know one female that did a operation to on herself, for breast cancer.

It isn't BS, it has been known to have happen.

You can use a local anesthetic for the procedure. And you can use high pressure needleless anesthetic too. I have never heard of any surgeons doing their own vasectomy. But I googled it and came across this amusing story told by one surgeon:

In the Air Force I worked with a medic who told me a surgeon he'd known had attempted his own vasectomy. As had I, he'd set up all the stuff and excused everyone from the room. Unlike me, he materialized in the hall a while later, unsuccessfully holding his bleeding scrotum, staggered around a few steps before passing out, unceremoniously, in front of the crowd of nurses and medics that had gathered awaiting just such an outcome.

In the Bible Abraham circumcised himself. There are stories of men doing this to themselves. But there are no other stories that I can find of men doing self-vasectomies though I suppose that some might have. Vasectomies have a centuries long history.

And, yeah, I mean...regardless of how possible and plausible it is...it must've been quite DISTURBING!! I can't even look at my own cuts for long, especially the deep ones. To be able to open yourself up, and cut at the insides...@_@

I've gotten some before! But a long long time ago.

Looking at cuts, deep or shallow, doesn't bother me.

But there's no way I could trust my shaky hands with a sharp scalpel like that talk2hand I think I'd end up amputating my leg.

It's just so...UNREAL someone can do that!! Especially for something that's elective!! It's not life or death, ya know? (talking of the vasectomy, not the...cutting off of the arm, that may have been life or death).

Yeah, he would have died there if he had not done that. Poor guy, dang, but what stamina! What strength!

I would not say that about anyone who does a self-vasectomy though.
