This is a poem I wrote for my eighth grade science class. We had to pick a gem and write a poem about it. I liked zircon because zircon is always the one that's misunderstood, that people render as inexpensive, useless, and a mere copy of the diamond.
A beautiful star twinkling bright, A lonely traveler, Shivering in the night. You were once admired, You were once worn by royal families, You were once held in the hands of girl Her eyes iridescent with such joy only a gem could bring. But then someone else stepped in They took your place. Now you stay buried in the hills of Sri Lanka, Only to be found When someone else was looking for something else. When you are worn on the neck of the proud People call you a fake, A beautiful, deep blue imitation Of the magnificent, firework diamond. Ah, but let me hold you in my hand, You are but misunderstood You bring wisdom and joy, Prosperity and honor, When I can not sleep I reach for your glossy body And slowly fall into a serene slumber. Caring, misunderstood friend, I shall search for you in Cambodia, Dig in the hills of Myanmar, Buy you in Thailand, And wear you in Australia. Come to me, Misunderstood traveler, And let me mold your rainbow skin, Glistening with colors of the sun, Shimmering with colors of the sea, I admire you. A beautiful star twinkling bright, A lonely traveler, Shivering in the night.

They had you write poetry for science class? Huh....I guess that's pretty cool.
I never thought I would actually like a poem written about a rock...and here I do....
