Open Case File

It has taken five days to accumulate enough infortmation to begin a case file on my new foster child, Ariadne. She appears to be a highly intelligent, slightly photosensitive child who is also highly empathic and practical. She resists giving up her clothing for more modern clothing, but makes a concession for sunglasses, which she uses in conjunction with her head scarf.

She has no interest in toys once she has made them aesthetically pleasing and placed them where she can view them.

Despite a highly empathic nature, Ariadne seems quite set in getting her own way. For instance, I tried to get her to play a simple game in order to determine whether she was more logical or creative as far as thought processes, but she refused, finding the game much too easy and therefore below her. Goading and coaxing would not work.

Having noticed an unusual interest in the African style mask that hangs in the sitting room, I decided to take Ari downtown to visit some of the shops, most of which did not feature children's toys.

We walked in and out of several shops and after perhaps half an hour I allowed the girl to take the lead. She was oddly self-conscious until she got caught-up in it. Eventually, we came to a small novelty shop named 'Malabar', the sign of a wooden rocking horse. She walked up and down the rows before eventually coming to me with a hand-painted porcelain mask hanging from her hand. The girl was quite pleased when she learned that she could keep it. All the way home, she held it to her small face and peered through it curiously.

Her enthusiasm wore off when I pulled out a small leather bound journal and explained that I wanted her to (once I had educated her well in written language) write about herself in it daily. For some reason, the need for a journal escapes her. She asked why she should, and I replied, "So that I may learn how you think and feel." This seemed to surprise her.

Despite her resistance, I managed to get her to accept the journal and promise that she would attempt to write in it now and then.

This is all for the day.

Ariadne has taken to writing quite well. She is not very imaginative, so did not appreciate the usual children's stories. Instead, I had to start teaching from biographical works, poetry, newspapers, and such. After the initial setback, it worked very well. I've given her a dictionary and told her to try writing on her own.

At the end of my entry, I shall include the first in her journal, which she has given me permission to read at any time I choose. I told her that she could keep it private, but her words to me were, "Why would I need to keep secrets from you? You share yourself with me, so I'll share myself with you." I'm wondering if this is one of those 'differences' I was informed of or if she is really just that practical of a child. I've told her all I know, seeing no reason to hold back. She's started talking to me about her own thoughts on the subject.

Something that surprised me was when she said, "I'm very lucky to fit so well in this world."

Ariadne is a very precocious child in this way and once more shows her natural empathy. It'll be wonderful to see what she's like as a teenager.

I am worried, however, that despite her empathy (or perhaps partially because of it) she may feel the need to separate herself from the other. Thus far, she seems to get on well with them and has taken a strange liking to the girl Noire. She admires the other's boldness.

Perhaps my worries are uncalled for.

Now, Ariadne's first entry...

Lex says it's important for me to write. I don't know why. I think it's because he's a doctor. He says that he'll take me to a doctor soon, but why take me to one when he's one? Maybe I just don't know what a doctor is? It's someone who can tell you what's wrong with you. That's what I thought.

My dictionary which was a present from Lex says that it's someone who practices medicine, which is the stuff you take to feel better. I asked Lex if he wanted to give me medicine and he said no. So why do I need to go to a doctor?

He said he's a different kind of doctor. I didn't know there was more than one kind. What kind is he, I asked.

He said he's a mind doctor, that he finds out what's wrong with people's heads. I asked why people would need a head doctor if everyone can feel when something's wrong. He looked at me funny and I could feel that he was confused and thinking really hard about something. He told me that not everyone can feel things like I can, which really confused me.

"But how would you know if you can trust someone?"

"Well, you get to know them."

"How would you know how they feel about you?"

"You just have to trust them."

He felt. Let me look it up. He felt 'unnerved.' Yes, I think that works.

I really like my new dictionary.

We celebrated something called 'Thanksgiving.' Lex explained that long ago these lands were inhabited only by a people called Native Americans. One day, some pilgrims came from across the ocean and befriended the Native Americans. They celebrated the first harvest by giving thanks to God.

I asked Lex who God was and he had trouble explaining. He told me that God is the creator of everything-- the Heavens and the Earth, and went on with this story about a woman and man in a garden who were convinced by a serpent to eat an apple which God had told them not to touch. They were cursed and sin became a part of them-- sin is doing something wrong or harmful. God loved them so much that some time later, he sent his own child to die and bear the weight of their evil. Lex says that not everyone believes in God, but that he's a Christian and those who believe what he told me are called that.

I asked how there could be people who don't believe it. "Well, it's because they don't have faith, or... well, there are many different reasons."

We talked for hours about religion and I'm still not sure I understand. I have tried praying. It's very strange. I'm not sure how I'll know if God has answered.

Anyway, there's thing called Christmas coming up. It involves the birth of God's son and some dead man named Santa Claus. It's very confusing. Lex says I'll get presents and has told me to make a list of whatever I might like. He's very excited about it and has started putting up decorations. There are white, sparkling little lights everywhere, and strings of greenery with bits of red berries on every surface. And there is snow on the ground. The sun isn't as bright as when I first came, but I have to wear even more clothing to keep warm. The snow is ice, Lex says. I've never seen it before. It's fluffy and light and beautiful. I only wish I could play in it without getting cold. I love making snow angels, though it's hard to move in all the bulk...

I think I've written enough for now.
