I usually pat my horse for good behavior but recently a local said that a rub was a much better reward as the horse likes it more and it can't be confused with other signals{such as a short neck reain signal or a punishing slap of the rein}. Just wanted to hear other's opinions on this.

I give a pat, personally. But I have lightened up on the firmness of my pats. For awhile I really patted hard, and then kinda realized that since it kinda made a smacking sound, maybe that wasn't too great. So I pat lightly now. rofl

(The new forum format is kind of freaking me out...)

I use a combination of pats and rubs. I try to always make sure to incorporate rubs. I've heard a lot of behaviorist research say that horses don't naturally enjoy the "pat", especially the really hardy pats. So I try to rub or scratch for a reward. I think that horses can be conditioned to view a light pat as a reward though, so that they learn to enjoy it. That's going into behaviorst theory though, which I don't really have the energy for tonight!

I usually give a rub or scratch (depends) as a reward, along with "Good boy!!"
PostPosted: Tue Sep 25, 2007 3:48 pm

I always rub. I've seen so damn many people go "You're such a good boy! biggrin *SLAP SLAP SLAP* " and I can hear it from across the arena. How is being hit so hard on the neck a reward?! Gaah, people confuse me. @_@

rub or scratch. i also found it works wonders in calming horses down. the rub against the neck/whitther area is a natural space for horses in the way of that where they itch/groom each other. i found with my mare especially. shes tense in the walk, and in shows if she starts to prance, i dicreatly rub her there with my nuckles on the opposite side of her whither from where the judge is, and unless shes really stressed (like it was our 8th class and the speaker is making loud popping noises right beside her... xp ) it almost always works. unless the horse is totally gooney, it at least helps. haha come to think of it, thats how we stopped after our cross country run, lol, that and saying 'ea-sssy'... lol. (at that point, it wouldnt have mattered if if i had a crow bar in her mouth sweatdrop ).

I pat. pretty hard too. Win seems to like it quite a bit, but then again he's a pretty thick skinned draft cross.

I usually rub horses under their dock, they love that. But they love a good rub/scratch on their belly. I hardly ever pat anymore, if I do then it's a light pat. Only to horses that like pats though.

When I pat/rub my horse I use the mindset of hugging a little kid: say a four-year-old comes up and gives you a big hug. You're bound to rub their backs, but then you'll pat them a little bit gently in between rubs just so it's not so monotonous. Maybe that's a weird analogy, lol.

I give little "love pats" but nothing more than that. razz

Loving pat and rub mix
I make sure I give them a nice scratch here and there to near the saddle lol

I rub/scratch them afterwards. If they did well, or put up with a mistake I made I make sure to scratch at the base of the mane, because for most of the horses at the barn I ride at that is their sweet spot.

I do both usually. When Victor's good, I give him a little pat on the shoulder. Horses can feel a fly land on them, so they can definitely feel a rewarding pat. They know the difference between a slap and a pat because they know when you're either angry or happy, and a pat is more friendly whereas a slap has bite to it. On the ground, though, he seems to like being petted more, and he likes a real good neck scratching. 3nodding I guess it all depends on what the individual horse likes.
