This is a part from a book I'm planning on writing. Enjoy, and add comments if you like! Just please, please, please, don't copy it or anything like that. This is very precious to me! So read, enjoy, comment, whatever, just no stealing!
Kit sighed. Would this never end? She was sitting in Math 105, her first college class ever. And it was boring; so boring, in fact, she'd almost fallen asleep. Twice. “Shoot me, already!” she thought, not really meaning it. She just wanted the class to end! Kit looked out the window. Clear, blue sky, bright sunshine, big black thing hurtling toward her… wait…. That was not supposed to be there! Someone in the room screamed. Kit jumped out of her desk and, disregarding the panic around her, shoved her way out of the classroom. Kit ran for the ladies’ restroom, dived in, and made sure she was alone. Catching her breath, Kit relaxed, and thought carefully: “I am Kysmet, I am Kysmet!” Suddenly her whole was engulfed in bright, white flames.
Kit’s features changed: she became furry, grew a cat tail and ears, and her eyes became cat-like. Her human ears disappeared. Her long hair became short and lightly spiky. The flames vanished; She was not singed in any way. She had become a cat-like creature; she had become Kysmet. Kysmet unsheathed shiny, black, six-inch long claws. The claws were as sharp and deadly as they looked.
Flicking her tail from side to side, Kysmet crawled out of the bathroom window and up onto the flat roof of the building. She made her way carefully and silently towards where she had seen the menacing black creature. She scanned the ground for any signs of it; after all, who knew, it might have moved. Kysmet heard screaming as she drew near the edge of the roof. She was crawling now, down on her stomach. She had no wish to be spotted by the creature.
Kysmet peeked over the edge of the wall she was scrunched up against. Most people had run away from the creature. It seemed that one group of students were trying to keep the shadowy creature from entering the building and hurting those trying to escape.
Brave, Kysmet thought. Stupid, but brave.
Kysmet came to her feet with a leap. She knew what she had to do.
“Hey, Ugly!” she shouted.
The black creature looked up. Kysmet took a split-second to look it over.
It wasn’t just black; it seemed to absorb light and cast darkness around it. Its eyes were huge orbs of solid white. The creature’s mouth was a gaping black hole with long, ivory fangs. It was an eight-foot tall, muscle-bound menace. It wore black armor and had bat wing ears.
Well, Kysmet thought. I was hoping for some excitement; I guess I got my wish!
Kysmet shouted for the remaining students to get inside just as the monstrosity launched itself at her. She barely noticed its huge demon wings and tail as she sheathed her claws and threw herself flat on the roof. A nanosecond later, the thing almost grabbed her. Rolling quickly away from the wall, Kysmet leaped up and unsheathed her claws again. She took a fighting stance and got ready to claw and run. She knew she would never be a match for this thing’s strength, but she sincerely doubted it could dive under objects only slightly bigger than her.
The creature landed with a loud crack on the rooftop, causing it to split under his abrupt landing, but the roof held firm. It jerked out a massive, solid black broad sword and came for Kysmet like a bull goes for movement. She dodged at the last second and clawed with both hands at the creature’s right wing. She then spun around and prepared to face the monster again as it roared with pain. Dark blood spurted from the jagged tears she had delivered to its wing. The creature’s eyes went cloudy with pain and fury.
Kysmet’s goal was to damage the thing’s wings enough to prevent it from flying. That would give her the advantage of speed. She had already taken notice of the creature’s slow and clumsy gait. It was only fast when it was flying. The creature ran for her again. She once more prepared to dodge and claw.
The creature foolishly did exactly what it had before: it raised its sword to skewer Kysmet and went straight at her. She repeated her last movement; she dodged to the side and tore at its left wing with both sets of claws. She listened to its howls of agony as she spun around and took up her fighter’s stance.
The creature’s eyes were now glowing with a dark, unearthly light. Cold shivers went up and down Kysmet's spine as she saw the light. What is this thing? she thought.
Suddenly she heard sirens. Kysmet risked a quick glance over her shoulder at the road. She flicked her tail in frustration as she saw SWAT teams and police cars pull into the parking lot. They couldn’t handle this thing! Kysmet thought. Bullets wouldn’t stop it! Unless, of course, you had ten Gatling guns with a thousand rounds each and literally filled the monster full of lead. That might slow it down; “might” being the key word!
Kysmet refocused her attention again on the monster, half expecting it to be charging her again. But it was paying attention, not to Kysmet, but to the new arrivals.
Rats! she thought, as it launched itself off of the roof and towards them.
As its wings were too badly damaged to be worth anything, the creature basically just jumped to the concrete. Kysmet braced herself for impact. It came loud and hard. Several of the policemen and SWAT members yelped in surprise as they were thrown down by the slight earthquake the creature’s landing had caused.
Kysmet took in the scene below me. All of the men were holding guns: shotguns, rifles, and pistols. The creature walked forward, seemingly grinning. It walked like a baby, unsteadily, unsure of itself, yet knowing exactly what it was heading for.
Please don’t let them shoot at it! Kysmet prayed silently.
They shot at it. Their bullets just made it mad. It swung its broad sword in an arc in front of it, and a laser bolt shot out of it. Blue and deadly, the bolt went straight for a squad car. The men taking cover behind it ran for their lives and managed to hit the deck just as the squad car exploded like a miniature atomic bomb. The car flipped into the air and landed flaming on its roof.
The men gaped at the creature as it stood grinning at them. They’re probably thinking the same thing I am, Kysmet thought. This thing had to have come out of a science fiction novel!
Kysmet sighed. “Here we go again.”
Kysmet leaped from the rooftop, landing squarely between the monster’s ruined wings. She had startled it enough that it swung around reaching for its back with its free had, trying to dislodge her. She just clawed at its hand, causing it to howl. Just as it was reaching for her again, Kysmet drove all ten of her claws into its neck, just below the brain stem. The creature screamed an eerie-sounding shriek that made everyone’s hair stand on end. It dropped its sword and flailed its arms wildly behind it, desperately trying to free itself from its painful burden. But Kysmet held on with her legs and extended her claws to their full twelve inches, the tips ejecting through the front of the monster’s throat. Blood spurted out and dripped slowly from her claws.
The creature’s arms fell to its sides, its eyes glazed over gray. Its knees buckled, and it fell suddenly to its knees. The creature’s head and neck remained straight; Kysmet’s claws made sure of that. She jerked her claws out and jumped from the creature’s back just as it fell onto its side. Kysmet stood over it, disgusted. She hated having to kill, but this thing wanted to destroy all around it. That meant it was the creature or the people. And Kysmet had decided it had to be the creature.
The policemen and SWAT members came over. One kicked the creature.
“Dead,” he said.
“Good riddens,” said another.
They looked up, seeming to remember that Kysmet existed. But she was gone. She had run while they were inspecting the body.
“Thanks, whoever you are,” one said. Several others nodded in agreement.
“Hey, let’s give her a cheer; she’s a real hero!” one of the oldest men present said.
“Yeah!” someone else shouted.
“Whoo!”, “Yeah!”, “Alright!”, and “Thank you, miss!” were what Kysmet heard among the applause.
They called me a hero. Kysmet smiled softly as she listened to the cheering. That makes my day. She slipped through the bathroom window and again made sure she was alone. After Kysmet had checked carefully, she thought slowly, “I am Kit, I am Kit!”
White flames once more engulfed Kysmet, and she became fully human once more. The flames faded, burning away any trace of the creature’s dark blood.
Kysmet slipped out of the bathroom and headed back to class.
