It might be really collectible or just a good read, but every now and then you hit paydirt at a used bookstore or rummage sale or flea market, and you end up scampering away with an unusual, out-of-print or rare Holmes book. I've had some luck lately, so I started this to discuss such happy chances. They just make your whole week sometimes! biggrin

You can also discuss lucky finds of Holmesian DVDs or VCR tapes, music, plays, merchandise, magazines or magazine articles, etc.

Books I found at a Friends of the Library bookstore in the NC mountains back in May:
Exit Sherlock Holmes by Robert Lee Hall--paperback fiction
221B: Studies in Sherlock Holmes, by Vincent Starrett--paperback, nonfiction
Seventeen Steps to Baker Street, Edited by James Edward Holroyd--paperback, nonfiction

And I got them all for about 50 cents each!

Books I found last week at a cool old bookstore in Chapel Hill, NC:
The Incredible Schlock Homes, by Robert L. Fish--paperback, parody
The Memoirs of Schlock Homes, by Robert L. Fish--paperback, parody
Sherlock Holmes, by Trevor Hall--paperback, nonfiction
The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes, Edited by Sebastian Wolfe--paperback, fiction
The Pandora Plague, by Lee A. Matthias--paperback, fiction (Holmes & Houdini)
Sherlock in Love, by Sena Jeter Naslund--paperback, fiction

And I ordered a DVD of "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes last week at a Borders bookstore & picked it up yesterday. I'll be watching it today, for sure! Among the extras is talk about the massive cuts done on the movie--it was almost 4 hours long before edits!--and some RECONSTRUCTION of the lost sections! xd

Really? I figured areas near a University would have at least one cool old bookstore. The place where I found that second batch of books is in Chapel Hill, just on the edge of the UNC campus. They actually have a bunch MORE even COOLER Holmes stuff...but it's expensive and often rare. They have a pile of Baker Street Journals, for instance.

[I found the Complete Illustrated Sherlock Holmes with the original Paget drawings at a used book store (in hardback) for $2.50. heart

By the way, I have become a cosplay.]

Cool! few illustrators were as good as Paget!

Are you cosplaying a young Mary Russell? It's a good one! smile

Paget was solely responsible for the nose and the deerstalker. In the literature, it was described as a 'cloth cap' which is a very loose description.

I found a lovely hardback, leatherbound volume of all of the novels. Gilt edges, illustrations, absolutely beautiful It was a very nice edition, and only twenty pounds.

Ooo--nice! smile
But Sidney Paget can't be solely responsible for the nose...since he based his interpretation of Holmes' appearance on that of his brother!
So you have to thank him for the nose that inspired Sidney Paget! biggrin

So good old Sidney's heredity is solely responsible for the nose.

...That seems extremely odd.

I think Walter Paget himself did a few Holmes illustrations, didn't he? Not as good as those of his brother, though.

Walter just flat couldn't draw.

No, don't exaggerate. Look at this.
And this. And this. Just because he couldn't draw Holmes as well as his brother doesn't make him a bad artist. He seems to have a more Romantic style that really doesn't go well for Holmes.

That reminds me of something I found years ago--a book of drawings done by Charles Altamont Doyle. They were pretty strange, stuff he did when in an asylum, I believe.
Here, Here, and Here, the last a showing what many consider the worst illustrations of Holmes ever--plus some more not-good Holmes by other illustrators on the same web page.

About Charles Altamont Doyle.
And some more.
And a really nice review of the very book I was telling you about.
