Pain is only momentary. If you're worried about the pain, you aren't ready to get the piercing.
On another note, if you want it, just go ahead and get it. Don't psyche yourself out of getting it. When I want a piercing, it's usually a spur of the moment thing when I actaully get it. I usually lust after it for a couple weeks first though.

I really really want it, but I just don't handle pain well. Otherwise, I'm find with needles ... etc. Is there anything I can do to avoid the pain?
[Besides avoiding the piercing.]

Hold ice to your chin for awhile. It'll numb a bit and could work a placebo to make you feel better about going in to get it. I was super scared for my first lip piercing, but it was totally nothing once it was done. =D

The piercer will calm your nerves, if they do their job properly. C:. Mine usually copes with me having adrenaline-fueled doubts.

Any over the counter numby-thingy will only numb the outer most layer of your skin. So it's basically a waste of money. Also, when your skin is numbed, it tends to not sit right on your body, so the piercing might not heal where you think it's pierced at. A good piercer (and they are few and far between) will place it so that there is as little pain involved as possible and make sure you are as calm as you can be.
