I have known for a while now that there is another musical version of our beloved tale, but I have only recently taken an interest in it. I have looked it up and heard the song "Home." I was not particularly fond of it, but maybe it was just the woman's voice or the fact that I am used to ALW's songs.

How do you feel about Kopit and Yeston's "Phantom?" What elements are different from the ALW musical? Would you suggest me buying the cast recording? My birthday is on the 29th so I am fairly certain I can get anything I want on iTunes then, but I was thinking that I was going to get the "Spring Awakening" cast recording...However, if recommended enough, I may change my mind. Edit: Nevermind. I thought I saw it on iTunes earlier, but now I can't find it. My parents may get it for me over Amazon, but that would be a stretch.

Oh, and for a random mentioning: Think of Me. I love singing POTO, but I don't really have a crisp, bright voice like most Christines, unfortunately. I also got rather talky during instrumental parts for some reason. wink Comments and constructive criticism (preferrably on clip page or over PM, not here) appreciated!

Look at them squirm like worms in mud,
Blaming a ghost who's flesh and blood.
Crossing the line, tossing the dice,
Making decisions and paying the price.

Ah, my true love, more than a fantasy, you must be for me! I'll hear your voice and I'll see your brow, and I'll know your face like your music!

Y/K is good. Several of the songs are quite funny, and several are very beautiful. The problem with Y/K though is that it strays from the plot of the original even more than ALW does. Christine falls in love with Raoul's brother Phillippe (because Raoul doesn't seem to exist here), Carlotta is married to the only manager of the opera, and the previous manager, who also takes the place of the Persian, turns out to be Erik's father. So yah.

Here are some clips.

If I were really a ghost, my dear,
I'd find a better Hell than here!

I love the music in both, but the Yeston/Kopit version feels truer to the original story. you guys should check out the clips of David Staller playing Erik.

So much that I made icons for him. ^^

But the Staller version isn't Yeston/Kopit, it's Rosen/Schierhorn (I think I spelled that right). It does stay fairly true to the book at the beginning, but the deviation gets further and further as the play goes on. Plus I think that version was written only for filming.

My bad, I dropped the ball there. Still, the Yeston/Kopit version felt right. Charles Dance made a good Erik, too.
