This is a thread for ongoing political discussion. I typically keep very far from these, but I’m interested in what people are thinking. I’d like to point out that I said, “discussion,” and not, “debate.” This thread is for the enrichment of its participants, not for the berating of people with opposing opinions (or their candidates), no matter how wrong you know they are. I’d like to hold this discussion in the following format: I (or someone else) pose a question whenever discussion has died. The discussion stays on that topic for as long as there are participants.

This topic will be highly moderated. Flaming will be removed.

First question: If you’ve been following the run up to the presidential election race, who do you think best represents your views and why?

I personally think that Obama's pretty good... Now, hear me out: He stands for many things that I believe in, he has enough Charisma for two, and to be honest, he seems down to earth... (Unlike a certain candidate who has something in their past that has a background on how to deal with 'evil and bad men'... *cough* This candidate, albeit smart, seems a bit uppity. Not naming any names though!) maybe it's just the democratic side of me speaking, but his viewpoints do tend to have a good basis in what many people care about.

No, I'm not voting for him if he gets on the list. ...I won't be 18 then!

you , uh, didn't use any names Gatta, but your unfiltered use of proper pronouns kind of fingered her.

Beyond that, though, I'm staying out of this. I'll vote for the guy that answers the hard questions. Whoops, looks like I'm not voting this run around!

Seriously, though, I hate politics. This may shock people as I am currently a student of international politics, so let me set the record straight, I find political systems and power plans fascinating, but popular politics is about as engaging as the news magazine television show "extra."

So instead I'll leave you with this profound quote from my professor: "The only problem with voting against the Democrats in this next election is that you'd have to vote for the Republicans."

I lost interest in Obama after he spoke out against Don Imus. I was really hoping he would have stood up for free speech, but he didn't.

I've been looking at Dennis Kusinich and Ron Paul. They were the only candidates that voted against the war in Iraq. Now, they're both for an immediate withdrawal. That’s something I don’t think is the best idea, but I think that they won’t be able to accomplish it. I’m going to avoid discussing that elephant for now.

I favor Ron Paul more than Kusinich. This is because I pay a lot in taxes and I benefit more from a free market economy that most people. He’s against torture and the war on drugs. He supports habeas corpus.

He’s against quite a few things that I support, but I’d be willing to let those slide for the things we agree on.

Kusinich is like Ron Paul, only he strongly supports federally provided social services.

Edited by MU: you repeated the first lines "I lost... withdrawal."

Oh, damn. I missed that one. I meant to say 'Their'... only proof that I need to reread everything that's not naming names more than twice! sweatdrop sweatdrop sweatdrop *goes to change that pronoun

I will never claim to know everything about politics, but I will tell you this. When/if it boils down to Clinton/Obama, I'm all for Obama. I agree with him on many of his stands, and he is great to listen to. He would be a powerful leader, and I think he'll fufill his promises. He does not SEEM to be telling people only what they'd like to here, and he also seems to be leaving his ways partially open to the people.

-pops in for a random meaningless insert-
We should never have a female as president because we would nuke another country every 27 days.

Do either of you have any idea how horrible that is? Are you really suggesting a female president would have no control over her emotions and would declair war on a whim? What's your basis for that statement?

PMS and Menopause. And I was obviously joking, except in the case of a certain possible candidate...

Presidents shouldn't matter. Give the power back to our mismanaged and corrupt congress! For America's sake.

Forget that. Make me dictator biggrin We'll have a wonderful world, until I die and the throne of dictator is fought over by completely undeserving underlings.

Personally, I'm all for revolution.
I think a little chaos is exactly what nature needs in order to create something new and better. In this manner I agree completely with the most ineffective of all movie villains: Zorg from the Fifth Element.
This is also why I think the government should stop bailing out the economy. Let it fail, it will rebuild itself, this is what capitalism is all about. If something doesn't work, allow it to destroy itself with its unworkings. Don't help it remain ineffectual. It just creates more debt for our government, which is in turn failing and needs to be replaced.
So then, who's with me? I vote we take it all down. How about you, Thomas Jefferson, what do you say?
The tree of liberty must be watered periodically with the blood of tyrants and patriots alike.

Very well said, Tom, very well said.

Make me dictator and I can promise one thing....

A Switzerland-esque gun law. xD All male citizens between the ages of 21 and 60 were required to own and maintain a firearm and ammunition (24 minimum) Sure alot of the population would drop in the first week. But after that, it'd all be good.

Mom, here I come!

Understood? Good. So either no Gatta or no dictator... Or a Gatta dictator. One of the three.
