I know that we all love reading Austen - what are your viewpoints on the translation from literature to film?

I have to say that my favorite thus far has been Bride & Prejudice, the Bollywood rendition of P&P. It's not incredibly true to the written form (hello, set in india..) but it's visually stunning, the actors are fantastic, and (hello) musical! smile

Other films include:
- Becoming Jane (2007)
- Bride & Prejudice ( 2004)
- Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
- Clueless (1995)
- Emma (1948 - TV)
- Emma (1960 - TV)
- Emma (1972 - miniseries)
- Emma (1996 - TV)
- Emma (1996)
- Jane Austen Book Club (2007)
- Jane Austen in Manhattan (1980)
- Kandukondain Kanduko (2000)
- Mansfield Park (1983 - miniseries)
- Mansfield Park (1999)
- Mansfield Park (2007 - TV)
- Northange Abbey (1986 - TV)
- Northanger Abbey (2007 - TV)
- Persuasion (1960 - miniseries)
- Persuasion (1995)
- Persuasion (2007 - TV)
- Pride & Prejudice (1938 - TV)
- Pride & Prejudice (1940)
- Pride & Prejudice (1952 - miniseries)
- Pride & Prejudice (1958 - miniseries)
- Pride & Prejudice (1967)
- Pride & Prejudice (1980 - miniseries)
- Pride & Prejudice (1995 - miniseries)
- Pride & Prejudice (2003)
- Pride & Prejudice (2005)
- Sense & Sensibility (1981 - TV)
- Sense & Sensibility (1995)
- Sense & Sensibilidad (200 cool
- Sense & Sensibility (2008 - miniseries)

Tell me if I've missed any and I'll add them! Also, when we get a better idea of the movies that everyone has seen I'll probably put up a poll to see which is everyone's favorite.

There are heaps of movies based on her books. Most have the same name as the book they are based on but some don't.
E.g. Clueless is loosely based on Emma (Spoilt pretty rich girl trying to make her friend a good match)

I cried like a b***h (pardon my french) after watching Becoming Jane! Did anyone else find James'(Tom) eyes absolutley entrancing?

It'd be great to get them all catalogued though, don't you think?

bridget jone's diary is based on p&p

WOW! Such an extensive list! I think I shall have to copy it and keep track of which one's I've seen and ones I need to see...like for instance: I've never heard of Jane Austen in Manhattan.

Also, does anyone know when the ITV made-for-television miniseries of NA, MP and P are coming to the US??

Well I put Jane Austen in Manhattan up mainly because in it they supposedly discuss some of her works - it's about two people who want to produce a play that she wrote when she was younger.. I'd never heard of it either!

I really want to see that Indian version of Sense and Sensibility now!

Becoming Jane made me cry so hard. I LOVE Clueless. So cute. I find the Keira Knightly and the Colin Firth versions of P & P to be my favorite (don't bother watching the Laurence Olivier version, even if he is gorgeous). A&E/BBC do great versions though: their Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds as Captain Wentworth is superb. Bride & Prejudice was entertaining, but I doubt I'll watch it again.

i want to see that version.

I've seen the one with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones. it was good except for the "Captain Wentworth is a spy?" thing ((Rupert Penry-Jones is also in Spooks)). It is kind of like the "Agent Smith is an elf?" You get after watching the Matrix and LoTR

I need to see Pride and Prejudice and Becoming Jane! The book was good, so I guess the movie is good! The movie "BJ" sounds like an excellent movie also! Does anyone remember the name of that Elizabethan movie? Did anyone know that The Lion King came from (or was inspired by) Hamlet?

YES! They're very, very good...well, BJ is okay. P&P is AMAAAAAAAZING, and that's putting it lightly.

Do you mean Elizabeth: The Golden Age per chance?

YES! I did know that...it's a very loose inspiration, but it still is!
