I've been wondering how to make a besom. I don't have a piece of wood yet for the length of it (I've got a smaller besom from a New Age store in town - it's oak, and it's for my altar and other such things that need clearing that are small). I'd like a full-sized besom, though, for cleaning energy out of my room/house.
I hope that my family decides to go to the beach sometime soon, or something like that. I'd love to be able to find a piece of driftwood for my besom (my wand was also found on the beach).
I looked online for how to make a besom, and I found a website. Making A Besom
It's all fine and dandy, except I have no idea where to get straw or herbs. I was thinking that for the twine I'd use hemp.
Does this sound ok?

Handmade things are great, they have more energy then buying things. I say this sounds perfect making your own besom. As for finding herbs, you can always go to an organic shop or even start growing your own. Have fun and good luck.

Hmm have you tried going to a craft store of somthing? Most craft stores have stuff like that for wrieth(sp?) making, and othe crafts, so you might be able to find somthing there that will work. I've never made one so I was never looking for that kind of stuff, but I don't know, maybe you could find somting there. That would be my first stop at least.

Straw can be found at a craft store, especially October-November, and in some produce stores if you live in or near a farming community. They use it for ambience and might not mind selling or even giving you some extra.
And of course, herb gardens are great fun if you're patient, but for impatient ones, organic sections of produce stores are a good place to get the plants. 3nodding

*nods* Thanks for the advice.
What would be good herbs to put into my besom? I'm assuming cinnamon would be nice (I'll have to find some of this and pick it up...^.^;; wink . I've got basil, rosemary, and a couple of others growing (it's 5 a.m. here, pardon the lack-of-knowledge). Thanks.

My mom keeps two besoms across her door. (good place for them I might add) I love them because they are made with cinnamon twigs.

Thanks for the link!
My parents aren't too pleased with my being Wiccan, so I've kept everything I have so far in a silk box in my closet. My closet has a little table in it, which I use as an altar, but that means that when a ritual is finished everything goes into hiding again.
Update
Okay, I'll work on the besom when my mom's out petsitting (she's a professional petsitter) and dad's at work (he's an editor/technical writer, works pretty late). My mom and I keep an herb garden, which she only uses for cooking, this meaning that it's quite overgrown. I'm pretter sure that since I don't have any straw, mom won't notice the absence of a few herb sprigs - I'll probably use rosemary, bay, and thyme. And, see above, it'll have to be small enough to hide - maybe 6 inches to two feet long.
