What would your basic strategy for attacking be if you couldn't see your opponent's units or defenses?

Er...scout first?

Keep a variety of units at hand, and scout first.

There isn't much to say, as attacking blindly is not what a good starcraft player would do.

Or an extremely early worker rush!

Well, pro gamers never EVER use worker rushes unless they have support from other units. Even perhaps the most influential and perhaps the best player, Boxer would not use his Perfect SCV rush without marines to deal the real damage. Btw to answer your question, scout before you attack. For Terran's just comsat. For Protoss, use observers, for Zerg it's easiest early game but hardest late game. To scout their defence you'll have to sacrifice an overlord. However that overlord would be much more effectively used if used for a drop for example. Find an exposed are, load up with units and put it to wreak havoc.

I think that worker scouts are much more efficient. Overall, I think they're better if you can macro well. Just don't let them die, and don't get too distracted by it.

And yes, watching the professionals rush is rather fun. Watching them do anything, actually.

In terms of Zerg scouting, I like to research Burrow early and leave Zerglings plotted almost randomly across the map (and a lot around/inside their base!).

Okay, and let me put the original question better...
Say the enemy has a pretty balanced army (units, size, skill of micro/macro). What kind of attack would you normally form? Mass Carriers? Super-mass Zerglings? Or maybe just a balanced army, as well?

I'd look for a weak point and drop a small section of my force onto it.
Provided the dropping point's resistance is weak enough, I may either:

- Drop the rest of my force onto it and hopefully deal a large amount of damage through this method.
- Assault the main entrance with the rest of my force once enemy backup is provided to the dropping point.

Depends on what race they are. Pros never go for just a massing of many different units. They choose the units that work best against the other person's units. Lurker-Zergling vs Marine-Medic-Tank-(Firebat) is one of the common strategies. Zealot-Dragoon vs Vultures-Tanks is another one. Corsairs-Reavers-Shuttles vs Mutalisk-Scourge is yet another one. There are so many that I would not like to list them all here let alone HOW they are all used effectively.
