I go to an extremely liberal all-women college in Milwaukee. Only during election time do I get any discrimination from my peers, and, even then, it's minimal. Otherwise, no problems.
In the past few months, I have experienced some rather dense homophobia. In July, I was waiting for a bus to take me downtown on a Saturday night. It was pretty obvious that I'm a girl, I was wearing heels and I had cleavage showing (but it was also pretty obvious that I'm gay). Some guy leaned out of his car while driving by and yelled, "******** f*****t!" . . . wtf?
I work at Noodles & Company. I wear converses, men's shorts, the company t-shirt, and the company cap. One day, just a few weeks ago, I was walking to work while the nearby middle school was letting out for the day. When I turned a corner, there was a group of about 8 jr. high guys walking about 30ft ahead of me. When they saw me, they turned around and yelled, "DYKE! DYKE! Where's your motorcycle?!"
In both cases, I ignored the dumbasses and they just moved on. But it's still irksome. In the case of the driveby, nothing really could have been done. If the group of dumb guys was smaller, maybe I would have . . . lectured them? What can be done?

When people call me a f*****t I correct them by yelling back "I'm a dyke now get it correct!!!" If someone calls me a Dyke I just smile and nod saying, "Yep and dame proud." or if it is a girl I might say something like, "Yes? Are you looking for a date?" Mind you I was bold and suicidal back then so I don't know if that trick will work for you, but I'll say I've had more girls run away blushing then anything else with that last line.
Well, good luck. If you show that it doesn't bother you then they will start to learn.

I don't really go that far but I tend to smile or "beam" my pride rather then speak it. Don't yell anything hateful back..that will only make things worse.

I just acknowledge it and move on. While I've not had any directed directly at me, I did have to deal with a bit of ignorance via a facebook event I created. My college's GSA is doing something for National Coming Out Day (which is actually later today according to my clock...). I had only invited people that were directly connected with supporting the "GSC GSA" group on facebook, and then sent a few invites to members of the GSA who had not yet joined the group.
Anyway, I check today and find that someone has written on the wall for the event. They made 4 posts, each one a different verse from Romans. I'm not good with my biblical texts, but I believe it was from the section where God destroyed the town because of the gay men there. I simply deleted all 4 posts, and then kindly messaged him, telling him that such comments were not appropriate to the event, that he had a right to his feelings and opinions, but that the event would still take place, as it is our right. I haven't heard back. I was as nice as I could be though.

Rosenal: you did a great thing. Telling someone that they are allowed their opinion, but they can not stop us from continuing with our own ways is a great way to turn things around. The way you handled it was very mature and wonderful. I wish you all the luck on your coming out day, never heard of it myself but then again I'm getting old.
Well jaa ne
