What was worse than a day that got you upset enough to accidentally knock off your powers?

A day that got you upset enough to accidentally knock of your destructive powers when you were leaning against someone else's house. And then that neighbor turned out to be a really scary looking six foot five, buffed man... And he was standing over you hollering about damages and...

"MILES! Do you think yelling at a kid is going to make him any less destructive, back off before he shakes YOU up." A much less imposing man jumped the fence that separated his house from Miles' house. He was short, 5'5" and looked a bit nerdy.

Miles continued to holler.

The small guy came right up and shoved the big guy. He didn't actually push him, but he got Miles' attention. He lowered his glasses, looking a bit like an angry librarian, and speaking slowly and lowly like one too, "I. Said. Back. Off. The kid. I'll take care of him, and make sure your house is taken care of. Got it?"

Miles took a few steps away. The nerdy guy turned around and stuck out a hand, "I'm Clarence Holland, and I happen to be someone that can help you out. Need a hand, or do you have someone already?"

Really, you didn't get any luckier than that.

Jay’s world collapsed along with the wall he had been leaning on. His whole world was gone now. It didn’t even matter that a giant was yelling at him and threatening to kill him. As soon as the cops come they’ll arrest him. It won’t take long for them to find out that he is an evolved. Then they will tell his parents. His sister will snicker. His mother will gasp and his father will disown him. The life he strived for would be gone forever. He had worked so hard to keep his powers secret. He had molded his entire identity to hide them. He lifted his hood and covered his face. He wanted to hide. He wanted to run back to the room he had abandoned over an argument with is father. He wanted to feel his feet on the cracked wooden floor. He knew he would never have that again and the sorrow of that knowledge seemed to engulf him.

Then salvation came in the name, Clarence Holland. The man soothed the giant’s rage and seemed to give the young man a means of escape. He took Hollands hand. “Thank you for your help, “ Jay was obviously jittery, but now there was hope. He just needed to escape quickly. “I’ll be fine from here. Thanks, again.” He then turned to leave the scene as quickly as he could.

"Now, wait a moment," Clarence called, "You just knocked down Miles' wall. You can't expect just to leave? I'll need some contact information. What's your name, and does anyone train you? I need to speak with that person. If not, you should have a trainer. You could get yourself or someone hurt if you don't."

Clarence had moved swiftly to grab Jay's shoulder, firmly but without harming him "I'd hate to see some one get angry with you and no one around to NOT stop him." There was definitely a clear warning in his voice.

"And SOMEONE has to pay for my house!"

"Yes, and we'll have to figure out those details too," Clarence agreed, shooting Miles another warning look.

Jay focused his green eyes directly at Clarence’s. The threatening tone the man took with him made him glare. He disliked being trapped in this situation and he was beginning to dislike Clarence. “My contact information is none of your business, foureyes.” He said as he yanked his arm away. “Now back off!” He stomped his foot and sent a wave to the ground underneath Clarence’s feet. It would, hopefully, knock the man off his feet while Jay made a run for it. The wave was weaker than Jay had hoped it would be, but he ran anyway. The man he was dealing with was swift, but Jay was sure he could outrun him with a head start. It wasn’t like honesty was an option for Jay. His father couldn’t know about his powers and he didn’t have the money to pay for Miles’ house.

"So you're going to be a dim glow now?" Clarence asked moving suddenly to stand in front of Jay, arms held out quickly to hold him squarely. He hadn't even seemed phased by the earth's rumblings, "Let me spell it out for you. You either tell me your trainer's name, or you admit you don't have one. If you don't have one, and your parents don't know, then I'll take up for you. But you must let me help you. That will be the deal."

"If he runs, I'm calling the authorities!" Miles yelled, "THEY'LL take care of him."

Clarence gritted his teeth, "Unfortunately, they would." He muttered.

Crap! What was the guy? The young man thought as he came to stop. There seemed to be no escaping from him. Jay didn’t want to admit it, but he was defeated. He stood there eyeing Clarence carefully for a few moments before answering his question. “I don’t have a trainer...” He looked away momentarily. The words seeming to sting with feelings of surrender. He hated his feelings of powerlessness. He hated having to give into Clarence's demands. He hated Clarence.

Clarence nodded. "Well then," he spoke cheerfully. "Now you do. I'll help you with figuring out your abilities and I'll help you with keeping this a secret. Honestly, I'm probably one of the best things that could have happened to you," he smirked. "Had it been left to that guy," and he jerked a thumb in Miles' direction, "They'd have you collared and locked up in the SDF like that." he snapped his fingers on the last word, as if to emphasise his point.

"HEY!" Miles protested, "My HOUSE gets destroyed, I get INSULTED and that freak---"

He didn't get the chance to finish his sentence because by that point, Clarence had moved away from Jay and had, somehow, slammed Miles into the ground and was now glaring down fiercely at him. "You will not finish that sentence or ever utter it again." As fierce and creepy as he appeared to be, he was still speaking quite pleasantly to Miles. "Is that clear?"

Miles stared at him in shock and horror. "Y-yes..."

What was with this guy? The situation was unrealistic. No one just helped someone else out of the goodness of their heart. At least they didn't help someone this much out of the goodness of their heart. What did this man want in return. He had to have wanted something from Jay.

Jay didn't have long to think about this. Miles started to speak again and Clarence seemed to snap. Jay couldn't believe how fast Clarence had moved. He hadn't even seen it. It's true that Clarence was defending him, but that didn't make the scene any less scary. Jay wanted to run again, but now he was sure there would be no escaping. Even if he ran he couldn't match Clarence's speed. He stood watching because it was the only thing he could do.

"Good," Clarence smiled, then stood up and rubbed his hands on his pants, as if cleaning them. "Now, I assure you that all damage and costs will be taken care of," he spoke cheerfully. "I trust that we will be able to handle this?"

On Miles' frightened nod, Clarence nodded too, and turned back to Jay. "Let go inside." He motioned to his house. "You can drink something, and calm down and I'll explain a few things to you." He smiled sunnily at Jay and looked expectantly at him. "I understand things might seem a bit scary, but not everything is what it seems to be." He winked and chuckled at Jay.

Jay felt like he was stuck in a really bad dream. He didn't want to go into Clarence's home. The fact that the man winked at him did nothing to help him feel better. In fact, the quick change in emotion made Jay feel even worse. Still he did what he was told. He moved catiously into Clarence's home. It seemed normal enough on the inside. Jay half expected to find something strange inside. He stood facing the door and put his hand on one of the walls. If Clarence was gonna take him out then Jay was taking bringing Clarence down with him.

Clarence had laughed amusedly at Jay's hesitance before escorting him to a bright and well-lit kitchen in the back of the house. It was very spacious, and did not seem at all threatening. As a matter of fact, there was a woman already there, and the kitchen smelled delicously to apples. Apprently the woman was baking a pie.

She looked up when Clarence and Jay entered, her brow momentarily frowning in confusion but then smiled sunnily at Clarence. She looked pretty, with brown curls framing her face and deep brown, warm eyes. She appeared to be a very bouncy and cheerful personality. "Clarence? Where did you find this young man?" She asked curiously, examining Jay. "You don't look so good, you poor dear! Would you like a drink? Something to eat? My apple pie is just about ready! Do you like that, sweetheart?"

Clarence chuckled. "My wife," he muttered to Jay. "Don't smother him, Deb," he spoke to her. "He just accidentally thrashed Miles' place."

"Oh?" Deb looked quizically at Jay for a moment before her eyes lit up in understanding. "Oh! You poor, poor dear! Are you alright? That must have been so frightening for you!" she exclaimed and promptly made Jay sit in one of the chairs and started fussing even more over him, giving him a drink and placing a bowl of fresh-baked cookies in front of him. "That man!" she huffed, "he has no care for...well... for people like us," she scowled, but not at Jay. "Did he hurt you?" She actually seemed so fierce at that moment she was about ready to storm out and tell Miles her opinion herself.

"Deb..." Clarence sighed.

Jay was surprised. The kitchen seemed extremely comfortable. It could have been the apples or it could have been Deb. She seemed like a very warm woman. He tried to answer her first few questions, but he couldn't seem to get a word in. Jay let her sit him down and he accepted the cookies and milk with a kind nod. "It's fine..." Jay said as he saw Deb get angry at Miles. "Really...I'm fine." He gave her a somewhat nervous smile. He wasn't sure what to think anymore. The house seemed so innocent, but he still couldn't shake his uneasiness. What did Clarence want? He had to have wanted something. Jay stared at him questioningly. He would have traded his powers for mind reading at this very moment if he could.

"Are you sure?" Deb asked, still full of concern. She clasped her hands together. "That man can be so incredibly awful!"

"It's fine, Deb." Clarance spoke softly. "I took care of it." He turned to Jay. "Was this the first time something like this happened?"

"No," Jay responded quickly taking a sip of his milk. He stood very calm now, but he still felt uneasy. He didn't like talking about his powers. He had been trying to keep them secret for so long that it felt terribly uncomfortable. He put the glass down for fear that he might break it if he felt even more uneasy. E simply stared across at Clarence and waited for the next question.
