Which are the greatest Piano Concerti in your opinions? I will add to the list as time progresses.
Mozart: 20, 21, 23, 24, 27. Beethoven: 4, 5. Rachmaninoff: 2, 3. Shostakovich: 2. Prokofiev: 3, 4. Brahms: 1, 2. Grieg: 1. Schumann: 1. Tchaikovsky: 1. Mendelssohn: 1. Ravel: G major. Liszt: 1, 2. Chopin: 1, 2. I'm sure there are many more, but those jumped off the top of my head. My personal favourites are underlined (just for interest...).

Watching the performance of the Beethoven 5th, still hasn't made me like him more. I just... I don't know... It's nice and everything, but it doesn't really draw me in.
Hmph.
I can't think of anymore to add to the list...

I'm shocked, since this is coming from you--you actually didn't include Chopin's two concertos? XD
There are also some excellent Haydn ones, but I don't have any recordings on hand except No. 11 in D major... Also, Liszt's two Piano Concertos are fantastic. I'm especially fond of the A major. ^_^
I initially didn't like Gershwin's Piano Concerto that much, but recently I've given it a few more listens and it's slowly growing on me. Wonderful orchestration in there <3

Oh, yeah, I'm playing Haydn's Piano concerto in D major actually! Well, I'm playing the orchestral reduction but she said I could learn the piano part as well (I'm doing it with a friend whose piano teacher wants her to play it; he told her to play the first part, but I'm learning it too, just for fun).
It's really nice actually, I especially love it when you get the theme coming back in the relative minor. Very pretty indeed, which is quite high praise considering I generally don't like Classical period stuff, apart from Mozart because he's just wonderful.

Haydn is too often underestimated. Too many people do not think much of his output, but I love his quartets, and the humour, harmony and surprising phrase lengths in his sonatas. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying his D major concerto ^_^

I love the Chopin Concertos, but I don't think that they are great works in the genre of Piano Concertos.
Ok, I'll add some Haydn onto there!
Ah, I forgot Liszt.
Mozart is simply the King of the Concerto genre.
I don't particularly like Beethoven's Concertos, apart from the G major. The E flat bores me. *blasphemy*

They aren't of the same mould as most, but it's what gives them the Chopin signature. To its beauty alone, I think the two concertos deserve a mention.
I love all five of Beethoven's concertos, heh.

Le Aristocrat, I thought you detested that Tchaikovsky piano concerto? It's just that I remember in one of your posts, you clearly said that you can't tolerate any Tchaikovsky piano work and I'm curious. I do think he's quite good with orchestrations though.

Yes, Haydn is rather good, although I really don't play much of his stuff or of that period.
And I agree with you, John, the Beethoven 5th did bore me a bit, I'm it's very nice but still. I tuned out after the first section or so, which I really shouldn't say because it was quite a high profile performance and everything but... I don't know... It just doesn't have that special omph that I like with other stuff, like Rachmaninov or whatever.

Ok, I will add the Chopin Concertos up there...The solo work in them, after all, is beautiful...
@Melissa: Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto is, in my opinion, the best ever composed. So much passion! *sways*

I can only think of a few.
Beethoven: 3rd and 5th Brahms: Both Chopin: To be honest, I like the sound of his first concerto Liszt: I prefer the first, but both are fine. Rachmaninoff: 1st and 2nd
To be honest in all, I don't really prefer concertos over symphonies. Not sure why, but Mahler had a piano in his eighth symphony which had a cool part so I really thought that was cool.

I know that you hate Mozart, but you cannot deny that his Piano Concertos are probably, alongside the Rachmaninoff and Brahms Concertos, the best ever written... Also, don't you like Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto? Hm, I also prefer the E minor Chopin Concerto over the F minor...The 2nd and 3rd movements are lovely.

Actually, I've never listened to a Mozart piano concerto, nor Rachmaninoff's 3rd concerto, so I wouldn't know. But I really want to hear Greig's becuase I heard the opening motive and it was awesome.
