Since quite a few people here haven't much, if any, experience with role play, also known in net lingo as RPs, I'll take the time to explain most of the basics here :3

----------__----------

Role Playing: 3 Basic questions

1. I keep hearing about RPs, but something's bugging me... What exactly IS a role play?

Great starting question. In short, a role play is a story told from the perspective of several people who are playing at once. Many people start, but the real test is to see how long it takes before the RP trickles down to no one. Approximately 95% of all role plays are NEVER FINISHED! Many reasons for this are evident, but let's focus on the definition first.

For the more technical peoples within the crowd, a role play has much in common with a book's script; action scenes are played out using words instead of visuals, detail is very important, and interactions between characters drives the story along. However, unlike a book, which may be written between one or two people, a role play often involves several parties, each with their own unique style and preference as to what characters they use. This makes role plays more diverse and interesting, since they give insight into how another person thinks and acts, even if neither of you meet in real life. That's about the best description I can give as to what role plays are.

2. What makes role plays so fun? I mean... why not just write the whole story out yourself?

Anyone who says this obviously has not tried to write their own story...

As mentioned before, a role play involves several people in the process of creating a story. Even if one or several people are new to the experience, it can still be fun and interesting, since people put forth their ideas of what their characters should look like, act like, sound like, ect. If only one person were doing this, that means 1) they have to create all these details themselves, and 2) they don't have outside help in creating different and unique characters, which could be good or bad.

For amateur writers, role plays are a good starting point before launching into making a story yourself. The mix of ideas you can get from playing multiple RPs makes life very interesting indeed, as some people might find ways around problems that you never saw or even would never HAVE seen, had they not done so. This furthers your understanding about what you can do should you find yourself in a similar situation later on in your writing career.

3. Ok, so basically they're fun because people make them fun... got that. So.... what exactly do you play as?

Heh... that question is possibly the hardest one in the world to answer! First, there must be a place for people to come to in order to play. If you're doing one for the first time, an excellent idea would be to participate in a few others in diverse categories beforehand to get the feeling for what you like to do, or would like to do.

As the genres for role playing stretch as far and wide as the number of genre niches there are in the world, simply making one role play can be daunting x-x trust me, nothing is more annoying that starting what you think is the perfect RP, and then having no one join it because no one knows where to start x-x

----------__----------

Creating a masterpiece

To begin, really, it all starts with a single thought you might have had a while back, or something that came to mind that you though “Hey, this would be cool!” If you become serious about your role playing (as I have >w<), keeping a journal or notebook of all the ideas that you want to keep when they pop up is an excellent idea, since notebooks and journals are cheap and ideas can come at almost any time of the day.

After that comes a “character rough”, as I like to say :3 Basically, what do you want your character to look like? How will they act? How will they react to someone? Thinking this up isn't hard, just time-consuming sometimes. This is why many people like to use only one or two characters for most of their role plays; it simplifies things a LOT. Me... I like a diverse cast, and use different characters for most role plays (outside of series, where you kinda have to have the same character for everything x-x).

Finally, to finish up the prep work, you need someplace that you know will let you host the RP. This can be any place from right here on Gaia to a more specialized site that deals specifically with your role play. There are several free forum-hosting sites, the more popular of them being InvisionFree, but these don't really give you many options to work with. Best for people who aren't obsessed with making their forums all nice and pretty and such.

Once you have the basic format down, have a character to start with, and a location that will let you do so, then comes the hardest part: starting the actual role play. Like many things in life, its easier said than done... First, writing up a rough on paper or a word program would be a most intelligent idea, as (i have found out the hard way many times,) simply writing it down on the web page can become... disastrous, especially if your computer is prone to being on the fritz quite often x-x Saving or even just writing it down in a word processor of some kind prevents that, as most nowadays have an auto-recovery system that prevents loss of important stuff, should your browser or computer abruptly die for an unknown reason >.<

Once you have that rough, read through it a time or two if you feel like its not up to snuff. If you feel confident and ready (or just ready... confidence can be a hard thing for some people to have x-x), draw up the rules for the role play. These will consist of the background or setting for your role play, what boundaries you set, such as: how many people can play, what era of technology you can use, pre-existing feuds you might have in the storyline, ect, ect, ect. Also, any special rules, such as “You are allowed to team up with one other person on someone else” would be put here. All of this is usually found at the beginning of the RP before you even begin, either in a separate post or at the beginning of your story. These keep other people from doing whatever they want, and tell what should and should not be found in their first posts and onwards.

A note on...

Godmodding

The easiest definition of godmodding is basically cheating.

A more in-depth definition would be anything that acts outside the realm of possibility within a role play; ie- “warping” behind another player to deal a death blow while playing in a real-world role play. Many people take high offense to people who godmod (also known as a godmodder), and these people are often tossed out of role plays due to the nature of their offenses. Also, people who are known godmodders are usually treated badly, due to the fact that no one wants to play with people who cheat.

The term “godmod” is believed to be derived from the game Doom, in which an inputted code produced the world's first “God mode”, in which the character was deemed invincible. Before Doom, godmodders were simply called “cheaters” in D&D matches, due to the nature of their seemingly constant ability to escape every trap, attack, and negative status, thus making themselves out to be gods when they were, in fact, cheating to the core.

Several forms of godmodding exist: passive godmodding, active godmodding, and the illusive “automod” which closely resembles the active godmod, although it is much more blatant. No matter the form, godmodding is simply a means of getting out of situations where people would have to think about how they would do something, so therefore all forms are cheating and generally not acceptable.

Passive godmodding includes the use of such items as invincibility, impenetrable armor, running impossible distances in short time periods, and the like. These can also be more subtle, such as certain abilities they state at the beginning that might go further than expected, and some people might not even realize that a player is cheating until halfway through. However, acts like this are often regarded more like annoyances, and are often dealt with if someone should use them without thinking. Also, passive godmodders may constantly dodge and heal themselves during fights, making it hard for other people to fight them. This is slightly more severe than a simple passive godmod, and often the work of new players who are newest to the system and have little experience. HOWEVER, nonetheless, it is still considered godmodding.

Active godmodding is what everyone knows the most about; these are the people that refuse to die, and will take any action to preserve their character(s), including blatantly ignoring the rules, using items, weapons, or abilities that are not part of the story specified, or controlling fight scenes so that they always win. This last aspect is also called metagaming: they attempt to play God, in a sense, by controlling what the other players can and cannot do. Also, active godmodders often control other players without their permission, pissing those people off to no end and often getting the offender banned for a very long time if they repeatedly use the same offense over and over again.

Automodding is perhaps the worst form of the quintessential godmod: basically, its controlling everything down to the letter of what other people do, including knocking them off with your own characters. Offenders who use these methods are often hated to no end, since they refuse to let other people play their characters how they want, and are often banned from role-playing after even a single offense in some cases.

Character interactions

There will be characters that meet each other in the role plays that you make. Oftentimes, role plays tend to stay on the more battle-savvy side, but occasionally two or more people might start dabbling in romance-based roleplaying.

Now, I personally have nothing against romantic roleplays. However, it has been my experience that combining the hormones of two teenagers of opposite sexes rarely ever ends up in a simple friendship. Please note that the rules state that sexual innuendos and scenes are strictly prohibited, and speaking from experience, if you seriously want to get whoopee with someone online, take it elsewhere; PM, IM, whatever, just don't start bakin' pies in the middle of a roleplay. No one wants to see it, and no one wants to hear about it, much less get in trouble because of you >.< Besides, what starts in the bedroom usually should stay there >.>

That isn't to say that romance cannot be a part of the role play. Simply that, for reasons mentioned above, it would be best to make it simply a part of stories, and not the story. I've done RPs before where two characters have “fallen in love”, but I wouldn't go as far as to start posting sex scenes in those, simply because it annoys people, and doesn't help me at all >.> Of course, I'm all for awkward situations and hilarious moments of undying love >w< those are fine; sex is not. This also goes for the master/servant situations, as the context is pretty much the same for both.

Also, during battles, making things bloody is always fine with me; just don't start tearing beating hearts out of people and setting them on fire (via Temple of Doom). Overly-bloody and gory scenes will probably make a few people sick, and doesn't help your love life either (unless you happen to be dating a vampire... in which case, good luck on that! *pops garlic-flavored gum into mouth and holds wooden stakes at ready*). I'm sure there'll be more than a few bloody episodes, along with a few vampire-based role plays (there's ALWAYS room for more vampires 3nodding ), but just try not to overdo it on the blood and guts, ok? Not for me, but for those with weaker stomachs.

Me, I like blood and such, but some people might get queasy after someone dies a horrific death, or if a person appears in front of their character all mutilated and bloody and such. Again, to sum it up, romance and death are ok, just don't take either to R-rated extremes.

Tones

There are many different tones that can be used in role play, but here's several of the main ones:

Thought...: Thoughts usually drag out, and are rarely completed. These are the personal thoughts of a person, and no one else but this character can hear them! Keep that in mind when playing.

SHOUTING: Shouting is legal, but putting whole posts in caps WILL get them deleted. Shouting is usually for short bursts of anger, and rarely takes up more than a few sentences.

"Whispers": Whispers are used when two or more people don't want the other players to hear what was said. Respect these people's wishes if you aren't being whispered to: don't act upon information that two people whispered to each other if you were not part of that conversation.

OOC (out-of-character): sometimes, information needs to be relayed outside of that realm in which your character exists. This is where the out-of-character whistle can be blown. Think of it like a time out in a sport; its used to quickly relay information about what is happening, may be happening, or just a little tidbit that you may want other people to know. This can be very helpful if used correctly. Usually belongs at the beginning or end of the post, depending upon whether its needed at either end; sometimes, it may even be at both ends. (Notes: adding ooc stuff in the middle of posts is generally NOT a good idea... it breaks the flow of the story and messes everyone up. Also, only put related information into these places; unrelated info belongs elsewhere. Finally, whole posts that are of the out-of-character nature are pretty much a no-no, as these break the flow of most any story and annoy other people.)

There are several differentiations when depicting stuff out-of-character; i prefer asterisks to simply putting OOC, like most people do. You can use your own methods, but the idea is always the same, no matter what you use.

(parentheses): Parentheses are used to add quick tidbits of information directly into the story without going ooc. This is helpful when adding stuff that wouldn't fit into the sentence itself without rewording parts of or the whole sentence again. Just like anything else, however, overuse can disrupt the storyline.

Emphasis: Emphasis is used to emphasize important items, most often single words or a few words at a time, quite often to push an idea forward. Most often used in questions to push forward the idea that something forgotten may have been important. Example: "Why didn't she tell me that?" A small note: when using emphasis, if you are speaking normally, or typing outside of a character's voice, using italics is fine. however, if someone is thinking, using italics will end the sentence; use bold words instead, as it has the same effect.

(note: please do not quote this whole section or the section before it. that takes up too much space and dirties up the whole thing >< if you have a question about a specific part, please quote only that area and nothing more... if a whole section confuses you, ask about it; it shouldn't be too hard to ask about one section considering the size of it :3)

If I happen to think of anything else, or anyone else thinks of something I forgot, I can add it in here ASAP if it fits in the criteria sweatdrop

Alright, the next few spaces are reserved for amendments and such, as I doubt there'll be so many as to take up the rest of the page. I'll add them in if they come along 3nodding

answer: its up to you, unless the threadstarter (the person who started the role play) says no. i've done at least one RP where i had a list of spells, attacks, and such that were copied from a video game domokun

in the case of this first RP, however, i would highly prefer that people be creative with their stuff... its so much easier to copy a personality from TV or any other medium and just use that than to make up everything on your own. in some RPs, you don't have a choice but to make up your own, so that's why i'm starting out in this fashion. plus i want everyone to get familiar with how other people play, as that makes it easier to adjust to differing styles and preferences and the like. its always easier to play with people you know than to play against people who you've never been around ^_^ of course, it can get stale after a while, so new people are always welcome 4laugh
